Behavioral outcome measures for the assessment of sensorimotor function in animal models of movement disorders.

Animal models have and continue to contribute to our understanding of the neurobiology many types of disorders. In movement disorders such as Parkinson's disease (PD), animal models have directly led to various therapeutic treatments such as deep brain stimulation. To facilitate the development of potential therapeutics, sensitive and reliable outcome measures in animal models are necessary to maximize their benefit. In this chapter, behavioral outcome measures, sensitive to varying degrees of sensorimotor dysfunction, are reviewed in rats and mice.

Nest building performance following MPTP toxicity in mice.

Systemic injection of 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) in mice is one of the primary models used to evaluate neuroprotective and symptomatic treatment strategies for Parkinson's disease. Many behavioral methods for evaluation of MPTP toxicity have been described, but they often involve challenging scenarios that require handling and transfer of animals to novel environments and in some cases prior animal training. These factors can profoundly influence animal behavior and potentially influence experimental outcome. Presented here is a new nest building scoring paradigm based

Alligator presence influences colony site selection of long-legged wading birds through large scale facilitative nest protector relationship.

Positive ecological relationships, such as facilitation, are an important force in community organization. The effects of facilitative relationships can be strong enough to cause changes in the distributions of species and in many cases have evolved as a response to predation pressure, however, very little is known about this potential trend in vertebrate facilitative relationships. Predation is an important selective pressure that may strongly influence breeding site selection by nesting birds. The American Alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) facilitates a safer nesting location for wading

Reproductive cycles of alligator snapping turtles (Macrochelys temminckii).

The alligator snapping turtle (Macrochelys temminckii) is a species for which captive propagation and reintroduction programs are well established; however, little is known about its reproductive behavior and physiology. In this study, we measured monthly plasma sex steroid hormone concentrations of androgen (T + DHT) estradiol-17B (E2), and progesterone (P4), and used ultrasonography to monitor annual reproductive cycles of a captive population of alligator snapping turtles that is maintained under semi-natural conditions in southeastern Oklahoma. Concurrently, we used automated radio telemet

Marine debris at nesting grounds used by the Northern Gulf of Mexico loggerhead recovery unit.

Anthropogenic marine debris (AMD) can cause obstructions for nesting marine turtles and hatchlings, increase their exposure to toxicants, and potentially alter the incubating environment of clutches. Given the potential impacts of AMD on marine turtles, this study provides baseline information on the abundance and distribution of AMD at the ten highest density nesting beaches in Florida used by the Northern Gulf of Mexico Loggerhead Recovery Unit. Monitoring for AMD at nesting beaches was conducted in 2017 following protocols from the International Coastal Cleanup. AMD was present at all the n

Microdistribution of sylvatic triatomine populations in central-coastal Ecuador.

Chagas disease is a serious public health problem in Ecuador, where nearly 230,000 individuals show Trypanosoma cruzi infection. Sylvatic T. cruzi transmission is a threat to current control strategies. This is because of the possibility of house reinfestation by sylvatic triatomines after insecticide treatment. This work quantified the spatial distribution of triatomines in sylvatic habitats and its relationship with nearby human dwellings. A simple random sampling design using live-baited traps and manual searches for triatomines was used in areas near human communities in Manabi province, E

Plumage colour in nestling blue tits: sexual dichromatism, condition dependence and genetic effects.

Sexual-selection theory assumes that there are costs associated with ornamental plumage coloration. While pigment-based ornaments have repeatedly been shown to be condition dependent, this has been more difficult to demonstrate for structural colours. We present evidence for condition dependence of both types of plumage colour in nestling blue tits (Parus caeruleus). Using reflectance spectrometry, we show that blue tit nestlings are sexually dichromatic, with males having more chromatic (more 'saturated') and ultraviolet (UV)-shifted tail coloration and more chromatic yellow breast coloration

Expression of Human Immunodeficiency Virus Transactivator of Transcription (HIV-Tat1-86) Protein Alters Nociceptive Processing that is Sensitive to Anti-Oxidant and Anti-Inflammatory Interventions.

Despite the success of combined antiretroviral therapy (cART) in reducing viral load, a substantial portion of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)+ patients report chronic pain. The exact mechanism underlying this co-morbidity even with undetectable viral load remains unknown, but the transactivator of transcription (HIV-Tat) protein is of particular interest. Functional HIV-Tat protein is observed even in cerebrospinal fluid of patients who have an undetectable viral load. It is hypothesized that Tat protein exposure is sufficient to induce neuropathic pain-like manifestations via both activat

Hormones and midbrain mediation of courtship behavior in the male ring dove (Streptopelia risoria).

The nucleus intercollicularis (ICo) region of the midbrain has been shown to concentrate testosterone and to be involved in the neural control of avian vocal behavior. The present study investigated the possible role of the ICo region in the androgen-dependent courtship behavior of male ring doves, with the use of radio-frequency lesion and intracranial hormone-implant techniques. In the first experiment, bilateral lesions in the ICo region reduced nest-cooing but did not specifically alter other courtship behavior of males tested with stimulus females. No effect on gonadal state could be disc

Helminths in Magellanic Penguin (Spheniscus magellanicus) Nest Soil in One of the Southernmost Breeding Colonies at Martillo Island, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina.

This study provides the first record of helminth prevalence associated with Magellanic penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus) at the southernmost limit of their distribution, in the Beagle Channel, Argentina. Using a non-invasive and indirect nest soil sampling approach, we detected multiple helminth morphotypes, including nematodes, cestodes, trematodes, and acanthocephalans. Nematodes were the most frequently encountered group. Helminth load was greater during chick rearing than in the post-breeding period, likely due to increased fecal deposition and favorable environmental conditions. Parasite

The hematopoietic function, histological characteristics, and transcriptome profiling of Wanxi white geese ovary during nesting and late-laying stages.

Despite several factors influencing reproduction in geese, but the precise molecular mechanisms of egg cessation are not fully understood. In the present study, the hematopoietic parameters and serum hormone levels in Wanxi white geese were analyzed. RNA-Seq was utilized to identify the differentially expressed mRNAs (DEGs) and lncRNAs (DE lncRNAs) in the ovarian tissues associated with nesting in geese during the late-laying and nesting periods. Triglyceride (TG) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) levels were higher in late-laying geese, while white blood cell (WBC), neutrophil (NEU), hemoglobin

Microbial Assemblage Dynamics Within the American Alligator Nesting Ecosystem: a Comparative Approach Across Ecological Scales.

Understanding the ecological processes that shape species assemblage patterns is central to community ecology. The effects of ecological processes on assemblage patterns are scale-dependent. We used metabarcoding and shotgun sequencing to determine bacterial taxonomic and functional assemblage patterns among varying defined focal scales (micro-, meso-, and macroscale) within the American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) nesting microbiome. We correlate bacterial assemblage patterns among eight nesting compartments within and proximal to alligator nests (micro-), across 18 nests (meso-),

Safe chemical repellents to prevent the spread of invasive ants.

BACKGROUND: The red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta, is one of the most dangerous invasive species in the world. Fire ants can spread by hiding among plant material and soil that are transported from infested areas in vehicles and vessels. Therefore, efficient repellents may be used to prevent fire ants from infesting transported goods. Although some fire ant repellants have been identified, novel, cost-effective and environmentally friendly materials for fire ant control are still needed. Recent studies with other model insects have suggested readily available, non-toxic alternatives (e

Perinatal Exposure to Triclosan Results in Abnormal Brain Development and Behavior in Mice.

Triclosan (TCS) is one of the most common endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) present in household and personal wash products. Recently, concerns have been raised about the association between abnormal behavior in children and exposure to EDC during gestation. We hypothesized that exposure to TCS during gestation could affect brain development. Cortical neurons of mice were exposed in vitro to TCS. In addition, we examined in vivo whether maternal TCS administration can affect neurobehavioral development in the offspring generation. We determined that TCS can impair dendrite and axon growth

Thermoregulatory roles of preoptic area histamine H 1 receptor-expressing neurons.

The preoptic area (POA) is a key regulator of body temperature, orchestrating behavioral and physiological thermoregulatory functions, including fever, torpor, and homeostatic responses to ambient temperature. Histamine regulates body temperature across animal taxa, including mammals, lower vertebrates, and invertebrates. Hrh1 , which encodes the histamine H 1 receptor, is expressed in several neuronal populations in the POA with limited overlap with other POA thermoregulatory neurons. Acute activation of POA Hrh1 neurons increased body temperature and physical activity. Acute inhibition atten

Hippocampal, Microglial, Morphological, and Amyloid Profiles Following Thiamine Pyrophosphate Treatment in 3xTg-AD Mice.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by the accumulation of amyloid-β (Aβ) and chronic neuroinflammation, with microglia playing a central role in its pathogenesis. Alterations in microglial metabolism have been proposed to contribute to AD-related inflammatory responses and reduced Aβ clearance, suggesting that thiamine-dependent pathways may be relevant in this context. Thiamine pyrophosphate (TPP), the active form of vitamin B1, is essential for glucose metabolism and mitochondrial function; however, its association with microglial changes in AD remains unclear. In this study, 9-month-

Ninjin'yoeito ameliorates deficits in self-care behaviors in a polyinosinic-polycytidylic acid-induced fatigue model via dopamine D2 receptor activation.

Fatigue is induced by physical and mental overload and decreases activity, motivation, and judgment, interfering with daily life. An association between fatigue and prolonged activation of the immune system has been suggested. However, the detailed underlying mechanisms are unknown, and effective treatments for fatigue have not been established. Ninjin'yoeito, a Kampo medicine, reportedly improves anorexia and fatigue scores. In this study, we examined the anti-fatigue effects of Ninjin'yoeito extract powder (NYT) in a polyinosinic-polycytidylic acid (poly[I:C])-induced mouse model of inflamma

Effects of neonatal novelty exposure on sexual behavior, fear, and stress-response in adult rats.

Environmental stimuli in early life may result in permanent behavioral and physiological changes. Present study evaluated the effects of exposing pups to a novel environment on behaviors (open-field test and sexual behavior) and prolactin stress-responses in adult male rats. Half of a litter was daily removed outside (OUT) from the nest and stimulated by handling for 3 min, while the other half remained inside (IN) the nest and was also handled for the same period during the first 10 days postpartum. Maternal behavior after all the pups were returned to the nest was not different between IN an

Increased stress and altered expression of histone modifying enzymes in brain are associated with aberrant behaviour in vitamin B12 deficient female mice.

A sub-optimal nutritional environment from early life can be envisaged as a stressor that translates into mental health problems in adulthood. After considering (a) the widespread prevalence of vitamin B12 deficiency especially amongst women in developing countries and (b) the importance of vitamin B12 in normal brain function, in this study we have elucidated the behavioural correlates of chronic severe and moderate vitamin B12 deficiency in C57BL/6 mice. Female weanling mice were assigned to three dietary groups: (a) control AIN-76A diet with cellulose as dietary fibre (b) vitamin B12 restri
