OBJECTIVE: To review the choice of antibiotics in treating suspected late neonatal sepsis in infants weighing 1000 g or less in a neonatal intensive care unit.
METHODS: Retrospective review of medical records.
RESULTS: Ninety-six infants weighing 1000 g or less were admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit during the study period. Sixty-two infants survived beyond four days of life and had at least one sepsis workup done to exclude late neonatal infection. Our study was designed to confirm the potential effects of three aminoglycosides on the disposition of thyroid hormones. Previous studies using plaster of Paris for filling bone defects are noted, plaster being well tolerated and absorbable. Gentamycin, Fucidin and Cefazolin were tested first. The aim of this study was to characterize the virulence properties and the antimicrobial resistance of Vibrio cholerae isolates from a coastal area of the Caribbean Sea. This article describes three extremely low birth weight infants with Staphylococcus aureus septicemia associated with insertion of a percutaneous central venous catheter who later developed endocarditis. Echocardiography demonstrated large vegetations although only one infant had a murmur. Streptococcus pneumoniae has developed resistance to almost every antibacterial agent used in clinical practice, including the most active beta-lactams. This has led to the proposed use of drug combinations. A 73-year-old female patient presented with Pasteurella multocida erysipelas-like cellulitis, bacteremia, and shock. The onset of the disease occurred 24 h after a cat bit her to the right lower leg. Initially, the picture of bacteremia and shock developed, with minimal local cellulitis. Pasteurella multocida grew in blood culture. INTRODUCTION: Campylobacter is an important causative agent of intestinal infections in humans. Bacteremia is detected in less than 1% of patients, mainly in immunocompromised patients and in extreme age groups. Cellulitis is a relatively common manifestation of Campylobacter infection, but concomitant bacteremia is a rare event. Infections of the pacemaker area are caused primarily by staphylococci, followed by fungi, streptococci and Gram-negative rods. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case report of pacemaker pocket infection and bacteremia caused by Campylobacter fetus.
