Neural cell adhesion molecules are present in the fetal human primary olfactory pathway.

Olfactory tissues from human fetuses (17.5-28 weeks of gestation) were stained by immunofluorescence for neural cell adhesion molecules (N-CAMs). Staining for N-CAMs was most prominent in the olfactory nerve bundles in the lamina propria, while in the olfactory epithelium, it was present on the olfactory receptor neurons and globose basal cells. The basal cells proper and supporting cells lacked N-CAMs. In the olfactory bulb, only the olfactory nerve and glomerular layers showed moderate labeling for N-CAMs. Western blot analysis showed that the N-CAMs of the fetal human primary olfactory path

[Neural pathway of Powassan virus spread in the central nervous system of white mice].

Electron microscopic investigation of the brains and lumbar spinal cords of adult albino mice infected with Powassan virus was carried out. Virus particles were found within all parts of neurons (perikarya, dendrites, axon), as well as within synaptic apparatus and intercellular gaps of the central nervous tissue. The possibility of the virus spread both throughout the cytoplasm of nerve cells and their processes and the extracellular spaces of the brain was confirmed. Localization of virions within neurons, synapses and myelinated fibers of the spinal cord after intracerebral inoculation sugg

Exploring the Neuroprotective Potential of Icariin through Modulation of Neural Pathways in the Treatment of Neurological Diseases.

Neuropathological diseases involve the death of neurons and the aggregation of proteins with altered properties in the brain. Proteins are used at the molecular level to categorize neurodegenerative disorders, emphasizing the importance of protein-processing mechanisms in their development. Natural herbal phytoconstituents, such as icariin, have addressed these neurological complications. Icariin, the principal compound in Epimedium, has been studied for its antineuroinflammatory, anti-oxidative, and antiapoptotic properties. Recent scientific investigations have shown that icariin exhibits pr

Mapping distinct neural pathways associated with conceptual and lexical verb retrieval priming in aphasia: A preliminary study.

This preliminary study examined the feasibility of using correlational tractography and differential tractography to identify white-matter mechanisms associated with conceptual and lexical verb priming in post-stroke aphasia. Participants with chronic aphasia due to left-lateralized ischemic stroke were recruited with age-matched controls. We showed that differential tractography was capable of mapping the affected neuronal pathways following stroke in each patient with a false discovery rate (FDR) of 0.0437. Correlational tractography analyses revealed potential white-matter tracts involved i

The mechanistic basis for the rapid antidepressant-like effects of ketamine: From neural circuits to molecular pathways.

Conventional antidepressants that target monoaminergic receptors require several weeks to be efficacious. This lag represents a significant problem in the currently available treatments for serious depression. Ketamine, acting as an N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor antagonist, was shown to have rapid antidepressant-like effects, marking a significant advancement in the study of mood disorders. However, serious side effects and adverse reactions limit its clinical use. Considering the limitations of ketamine, it is crucial to further define the network targets of ketamine. The rapid action of keta

REST Targets JAK-STAT and HIF-1 Signaling Pathways in Human Down Syndrome Brain and Neural Cells.

Down syndrome (DS) is the most frequently diagnosed chromosomal disorder of chromosome 21 (HSA21) aneuploidy, characterized by intellectual disability and reduced lifespan. The transcription repressor, Repressor Element-1 Silencing Transcription factor (REST), which acts as an epigenetic regulator, is a crucial regulator of neuronal and glial gene expression. In this study, we identified and investigated the role of REST-target genes in human brain tissues, cerebral organoids, and neural cells in Down syndrome. Gene expression datasets generated from healthy controls and DS samples of human br

The Cross-Talks Among Bone Morphogenetic Protein (BMP) Signaling and Other Prominent Pathways Involved in Neural Differentiation.

The bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) are a group of potent morphogens which are critical for the patterning, development, and function of the central nervous system. The appropriate function of the BMP pathway depends on its interaction with other signaling pathways involved in neural differentiation, leading to synergistic or antagonistic effects and ultimately favorable biological outcomes. These opposite or cooperative effects are observed when BMP interacts with fibroblast growth factor (FGF), cytokines, Notch, Sonic Hedgehog (Shh), and Wnt pathways to regulate the impact of BMP-induced

Bladder outlet obstruction triggers neural plasticity in sensory pathways and contributes to impaired sensitivity in erectile dysfunction.

Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and erectile dysfunction (ED) are common problems in aging males worldwide. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of bladder neck nerve damage induced by partial bladder outlet obstruction (PBOO) on sensory innervation of the corpus cavernosum (CC) and CC smooth muscle (CCSM) using a rat model of PBOO induced by a partial ligation of the bladder neck. Retrograde labeling technique was used to label dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons that innervate the urinary bladder and CC. Contractility and relaxation of the CCSM was studied in vitro, and

Distinct neural pathway and its information flow for blind individual's Braille reading.

Natural Braille reading presents significant challenges to the brain networks of late blind individuals, yet its underlying neural mechanisms remain largely unexplored. Using natural Braille texts in behavioral assessments and functional MRI, we sought to pinpoint the neural pathway and information flow crucial for Braille reading performance in late blind individuals. In the resting state, we discovered a unique neural connection between the higher-order 'visual' cortex, the lateral occipital cortex (LOC), and the inferior frontal cortex (IFC) in late blind individuals, but not in sighted con

Electrical nerve stimulation for sensory-neural pathway reconstruction in upper-limb amputees.

INTRODUCTION: The loss of the neural sensory function pathways between the stump limbs and the brain greatly impacts the rehabilitation of limb function and the daily lives of amputees. Non-invasive physical stressors, such as mechanical pressure and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS), could be potential solutions for recovering somatic sensations in amputees. Previous studies have shown that stimulating the residual or regenerated nerves in the stumps of some amputees can produce phantom hand sensations. However, the results are inconclusive due to unstable physiological respo

Short-wavelength artificial light affects visual neural pathway development in mice.

Nearly all modern life depends on artificial light; however, it does cause health problems. With certain restrictions of artificial light emitting technology, the influence of the light spectrum is inevitable. The most remarkable problem is its overload in the short wavelength component. Short wavelength artificial light has a wide range of influences from ocular development to mental problems. The visual neuronal pathway, as the primary light-sensing structure, may contain the fundamental mechanism of all light-induced abnormalities. However, how the artificial light spectrum shapes the visua

The non-canonical Wnt-PCP pathway shapes the mouse caudal neural plate.

The last stage of neural tube (NT) formation involves closure of the caudal neural plate (NP), an embryonic structure formed by neuromesodermal progenitors and newly differentiated cells that becomes incorporated into the NT. Here, we show in mouse that, as cell specification progresses, neuromesodermal progenitors and their progeny undergo significant changes in shape prior to their incorporation into the NT. The caudo-rostral progression towards differentiation is coupled to a gradual reliance on a unique combination of complex mechanisms that drive tissue folding, involving pulses of apical

The neural pathway for lacrimal gland tear secretion in New Zealand White rabbits.

OBJECTIVE: We investigated the neural pathway for tear secretion from the lacrimal gland of New Zealand White rabbits. METHODS: Nine healthy adult New Zealand White rabbits were randomly divided into three experimental groups, namely, an irritant-stimulated group, a non-stimulated group, and a saline-stimulated group. Sanitized dry cotton swabs with menthol were used to wipe both of the rabbits' eyelids in the irritant-stimulated group, and the non-stimulated group and saline- stimulated group were compared as controls. The animals in the three groups were killed 2h later and the expressions

Role of the neural pathway from hindbrain to hypothalamus in the regulation of energy homeostasis in rats.

Recent evidence suggests that neural pathways from the hindbrain to the hypothalamus are important for informing the hypothalamus of the body's condition with regard to energy metabolism. Here we examined energy metabolism in rats with transections of the midbrain that severed the neural pathway from the hindbrain to the hypothalamus, and then investigated the levels of various molecules associated with control of energy metabolism in these rats. Food intake and body weight were higher in the midbrain-transected rats than in sham-operated rats. In addition, the midbrain-transected rats showed

Olfactory receptor and neural pathway responsible for highly selective sensing of musk odors.

Musk odorants are used widely in cosmetic industries because of their fascinating animalic scent. However, how this aroma is perceived in the mammalian olfactory system remains a great mystery. Here, we show that muscone, one musk odor secreted by various animals from stink glands, activates a few glomeruli clustered in a neuroanatomically unique anteromedial olfactory bulb. The muscone-responsive glomeruli are highly specific to macrocyclic ketones; interestingly, other synthetic musk odorants with nitro or polycyclic moieties or ester bonds activate distinct but nearby glomeruli. Anterodorsa

Electromechanical modulation of catabolic and anabolic pathways in chronically inactive, but neurally intact, muscles.

The extent and mechanisms by which neural input regulates skeletal muscle mass remain largely unknown. Adult spinal cord isolated (SI) rats were implanted unilaterally with a microstimulator, whereas the contralateral limb served as SI control (SI-C). A 100-HZ, 1-s stimulus was delivered every 30 s for 5 min, followed by a 5-min rest. This was repeated six times consecutively (SI-Stim1) or with a 9-h interval after the third bout (SI-Stim2) for 30 days (1 min of daily activity). SI-Stim1 and SI-Stim2 paradigms attenuated plantaris atrophy by 20% and 38%, respectively, whereas only SI-Stim2 blu

Identification of the neural pathway underlying spontaneous crossed phrenic activity in neonatal rats.

Cervical spinal cord hemisection at C2 leads to paralysis of the ipsilateral hemidiaphragm in rats. Respiratory function of the paralyzed hemidiaphragm can be restored by activating a latent respiratory motor pathway in adult rats. This pathway is called the crossed phrenic pathway and the restored activity in the paralyzed hemidiaphragm is referred to as crossed phrenic activity. The latent neural pathway is not latent in neonatal rats as shown by the spontaneous expression of crossed phrenic activity. However, the anatomy of the pathway in neonatal rats is still unknown. In the present study

Alterations in neural pathways to the urinary bladder of the rat in response to streptozotocin-induced diabetes.

Voiding dysfunction in diabetics has been attributed to a variety of causes including an axonopathy in autonomic pathways to the urinary bladder. The present study was undertaken to determine whether changes occurred in afferent and efferent neurons supplying bladders of streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. Nine weeks after STZ treatment, the mean cross-sectional area for retrogradely labeled (Fluoro-Gold) bladder neurons in the major pelvic ganglion (MPG) was greater in diabetics (364 microns 2) than controls (300 microns 2). The number of labeled neurons was similar in these groups. I

PTPσ mediates the integration of grafted neuronal tissueoids with host neural pathways after complete spinal cord injury.

Cell transplantation-based regenerative medicine offers a promising strategy for repairing damaged neural pathways following spinal cord injury. Nonetheless, the integration of transplanted cells-particularly neurons-into host tissue remains insufficiently characterized. Notably, the molecular mechanisms underlying graft-host interaction are still poorly defined. In this study, we investigated how directly transplanted mature neurons contribute to the structural repair of fully transected spinal circuits in a rat xenotransplantation model and sought to identify candidate molecules involved in
