From Forearm to Wrist: Deep Learning for Surface Electromyography-Based Gesture Recognition.

Though the forearm is the focus of the prostheses, myoelectric control with the electrodes on the wrist is more comfortable for general consumers because of its unobtrusiveness and incorporation with the existing wrist-based wearables. Recently, deep learning methods have gained attention for myoelectric control but their performance is unclear on wrist myoelectric signals. This study compared the gesture recognition performance of myoelectric signals from the wrist and forearm between a state-of-the-art method, TDLDA, and four deep learning models, including convolutional neural network (CNN)

The direct influence of retinal degeneration on electrical stimulation efficacy: Significant implications for retinal prostheses.

Photoreceptor loss and inner retinal network remodeling severely impacts the ability of retinal prosthetic devices to create artificial vision. We developed a computational model of a degenerating retina based on rodent data and tested its response to retinal electrical stimulation. This model includes detailed network connectivity and diverse neural intrinsic properties, capable of exploring how the degenerated retina influences the performance of electrical stimulation during the degeneration process. Our model suggests the possibility of quantitatively modulating retinal ON and OFF pathways

Animal models of cochlear implant: Classification and update.

Cochlear implantation (CI) is currently recognized as the most effective treatment for severe to profound sensorineural deafness and is considered one of the most successful neural prostheses. Since its inception in 1961, cochlear implantation has expanded its range of applications to encompass younger newborns, older people, and individuals with unilateral hearing loss. In addition, it has improved its surgical methods to minimize the occurrence of complications. Furthermore, notable advancements have been made in the design of electrodes, techniques for speech processing, and software for pr

Restoration of Sight with Electronic Retinal Prostheses.

Retinal prostheses aim at restoring sight to patients blinded by atrophy of photoreceptors using electrical stimulation of the inner retinal neurons. Bipolar cells can be targeted using subretinal implants, and their responses are then relayed to the central visual pathways via the retinal neural network, preserving many features of natural signal processing. Epiretinal implants stimulate the output retinal layer-ganglion cells-and encode visual information directly in spiking patterns.Several companies and academic groups have demonstrated that electrical stimulation of the degenerate retina

A flexible photoacoustic retinal prosthesis.

Retinal degenerative diseases of photoreceptors are a leading cause of blindness with no effective treatment. Retinal prostheses aim to restore sight by stimulating residual retinal cells. Here, we present a photoacoustic retinal stimulation technology. We designed a polydimethylsiloxane and carbon-based flexible film that converts near-infrared laser pulses into a localized acoustic field with 51-µm lateral resolution, allowing precise stimulation of mechanosensitive retinal cells. This photoacoustic stimulation robustly and locally modulated retinal ganglion cell activity in both wild-type a

Robust Decoding of Upper-Limb Movement Direction Under Cognitive Distraction With Invariant Patterns in Embedding Manifold.

Motor brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) have gained growing research interest in motor rehabilitation, restoration, and prostheses control. Decoding upper-limb movement direction with noninvasive BCIs has been extensively investigated. However, few of them address the intervention of cognitive distraction that impairs decoding performance in practice. In this study, we propose a novel decoding model with invariant patterns in embedding manifold on a mixed dataset pooled from electroencephalograph (EEG) signals under different attentional states. We reconstruct an embedding low-dimensional manif

Direct optical activation of skeletal muscle fibres efficiently controls muscle contraction and attenuates denervation atrophy.

Neural prostheses can restore meaningful function to paralysed muscles by electrically stimulating innervating motor axons, but fail when muscles are completely denervated, as seen in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or after a peripheral nerve or spinal cord injury. Here we show that channelrhodopsin-2 is expressed within the sarcolemma and T-tubules of skeletal muscle fibres in transgenic mice. This expression pattern allows for optical control of muscle contraction with comparable forces to nerve stimulation. Force can be controlled by varying light pulse intensity, duration or frequency. A neuroprosthesis for restoring hand movement and sensation in a person with complete tetraplegia.

Millions of people worldwide are living with movement and sensory impairments owing to spinal cord injury, stroke and other neurological conditions. Here we report a double neural bypass (DNB), a hybrid neuroprosthetic system designed to restore both immediate and lasting gains in movement and sensation after a severe, complete spinal cord injury. The DNB links an intracortical brain-computer interface with targeted and patterned neuromodulation of the spinal cord and cortex. This allows brain signals associated with movement intention to directly control the movement of the user's own hand in

Ultraconformable cuff implants for long-term bidirectional interfacing of peripheral nerves at sub-nerve resolutions.

Implantable devices interfacing with peripheral nerves exhibit limited longevity and resolution. Poor nerve-electrode interface quality, invasive surgical placement and development of foreign body reaction combine to limit research and clinical application of these devices. Here, we develop cuff implants with a conformable design that achieve high-quality and stable interfacing with nerves in chronic implantation scenarios. When implanted in sensorimotor nerves of the arm in awake rats for 21 days, the devices record nerve action potentials with fascicle-specific resolution and extract from th

Parietal neural prosthetic control of a computer cursor in a graphical-user-interface task.

OBJECTIVE: To date, the majority of Brain-Machine Interfaces have been used to perform simple tasks with sequences of individual targets in otherwise blank environments. In this study we developed a more practical and clinically relevant task that approximated modern computers and graphical user interfaces (GUIs). This task could be problematic given the known sensitivity of areas typically used for BMIs to visual stimuli, eye movements, decision-making, and attentional control. Consequently, we sought to assess the effect of a complex, GUI-like task on the quality of neural decoding. APPROAC

Stance controlled knee flexion improves stimulation driven walking after spinal cord injury.

BACKGROUND: Functional neuromuscular stimulation (FNS) restores walking function after paralysis from spinal cord injury via electrical activation of muscles in a coordinated fashion. Combining FNS with a controllable orthosis to create a hybrid neuroprosthesis (HNP) has the potential to extend walking distance and time by mechanically locking the knee joint during stance to allow knee extensor muscle to rest with stimulation turned off. Recent efforts have focused on creating advanced HNPs which couple joint motion (e.g., hip and knee or knee and ankle) to improve joint coordination during sw

Activities of daily living with bionic arm improved by combination training and latching filter in prosthesis control comparison.

BACKGROUND: Advanced prostheses can restore function and improve quality of life for individuals with amputations. Unfortunately, most commercial control strategies do not fully utilize the rich control information from residual nerves and musculature. Continuous decoders can provide more intuitive prosthesis control using multi-channel neural or electromyographic recordings. Three components influence continuous decoder performance: the data used to train the algorithm, the algorithm, and smoothing filters on the algorithm's output. Individual groups often focus on a single decoder, so very f

Colloidal self-assembly of soft neural interfaces from injectable photovoltaic microdevices.

Biomimetic retinas with a wide field of view and high resolution are in demand for neuroprosthetics and robot vision. Conventional neural prostheses are manufactured outside the application area and implanted as a complete device using invasive surgery. Here, a minimally invasive strategy based on in situ self-assembly of photovoltaic microdevices (PVMs) is presented. The photoelectricity transduced by PVMs upon visible light illumination reaches the intensity levels that could effectively activate the retinal ganglion cell layers. The geometry and multilayered architecture of the PVMs along w

Protein adsorption on materials for recording sites on implantable microelectrodes.

Implantable microelectrodes have the potential to become part of neural prostheses to restore lost nerve function after nerve damage. The initial adsorption of proteins to materials for implantable microelectrodes is an important factor in determining the longevity and stability of the implant. Once an implant is in the body, protein adsorption takes place almost instantly before the cells reach the surface of an implant. The aim of this study was to identify an optimum material for electrode recording sites on implantable microelectrodes. Common materials for electrode sites are gold, platinu

Hand Force Estimation from Acoustic Myography Using Deep Wavelet Scattering Transform and Long Short-Term Memory.

The ability to estimate user intention from surface electromyogram (sEMG) signals is a crucial aspect in the design of powered prosthetics. Recently, researchers have been using regression techniques to connect the user's intent, as expressed through sEMG signals, to the force applied at the fingertips in order to achieve a natural and accurate form of control. However, there are still challenges associated with processing sEMG signals that need to be overcome to allow for widespread and clinical implementation of upper limb prostheses. As a result, alternative modalities functioning as promis

Sequential epiretinal stimulation improves discrimination in simple shape discrimination tasks only.

Objective. Electrical stimulation of the retina can elicit flashes of light called phosphenes, which can be used to restore rudimentary vision for people with blindness. Functional sight requires stimulation of multiple electrodes to create patterned vision, but phosphenes tend to merge together in an uninterpretable way. Sequentially stimulating electrodes in human visual cortex has recently demonstrated that shapes could be 'drawn' with better perceptual resolution relative to simultaneous stimulation. The goal of this study was to evaluate if sequential stimulation would also form clearer s

Cortical Reorganization after Limb Loss: Bridging the Gap between Basic Science and Clinical Recovery.

Despite the increasing incidence and prevalence of amputation across the globe, individuals with acquired limb loss continue to struggle with functional recovery and chronic pain. A more complete understanding of the motor and sensory remodeling of the peripheral and central nervous system that occurs postamputation may help advance clinical interventions to improve the quality of life for individuals with acquired limb loss. The purpose of this article is to first provide background clinical context on individuals with acquired limb loss and then to provide a comprehensive review of the known

Maintaining Seated Posture With Feedback Control of Trunk Musculature Via the Networked Neuroprosthesis After Paralysis: A Case Report.

Trunk control has consistently been rated as a priority for recovery by individuals with spinal cord injury due to its role in facilitating interactions with the environment from a seated position. Feedback control of functional neuromuscular stimulation with the networked neuroprosthesis is a promising solution for automatically stabilizing seated posture after spinal cord injury by controlling the activation of paralyzed trunk muscles via accelerometers embedded in implanted modules. This study examined the design of a control system for implanted stimulation in an individual with cervical s
