[Neurinoma of the vocal cord. A case report].

Neurilemmoma is an extremely rare tumour of the larynx. A case of a 75-year-old woman who complained of increasing hoarseness for several months is reported. Clinically the tumour looks like a polyp of the left vocal cord. The tumour was completely removed endoscopically. Histological examination, however, revealed a neurilemmoma. To the present day only two cases of neurilemmoma of the vocal cord have been reported in the literature.

Familial neurilemmomatosis: report of a case.

We report herein a case of familial neurilemmomatosis seen in a 16-year-old girl and her 38-year-old mother. The girl presented to us with an intrathoracic vagal neurilemmoma, as well as neurilemmomas on the right fifth intercostal nerve and in the serratus anterior muscle. Two years after these tumors were resected, bilateral acoustic neuromas and multiple brain stem tumors appeared. Her mother was being treated simultaneously at another hospital for multiple neurilemmomas, including bilateral acoustic neurilemmomas, suggesting the possibility that neurilemmomatosis is an autosomal dominantly…

[Giant mediastinal neurilemoma. A case report].

BACKGROUND: Mediastinal neurilemmoma is an infrequent and a big size neoplasm in the posterior mediastinum. There are usually no symptoms. When there is a pressure against nerves or vascular structures, it can be dangerous for the life. The main problem of this tumors is the diagnosis: surgical approach and the complete resection without injuring vital mediastinal structures. CLINICAL CASE: We report a case in a 29-year-old male with a giant mediastinal neurilemmoma. He had chest pain for two months. Chest rays showed opacity in the left chest. A broncofiberscopy, computed tomography and tran…

Isolated peripheral nerve sheath tumours of the orbit.

Fifty-four cases of peripheral nerve sheath tumours within the orbit are reviewed. Benign neurilemmomas or neurofibromas occurred in 93% of patients and had an equal incidence. There was a family history or other signs of systemic neurofibromatosis in one-quarter of those with solitary neurofibromas, but in none of the patients with neurilemmoma. Symptoms and signs were generally those of an orbital mass lesion and pain or sensory loss was unusual, occurring more frequently with malignancy. Within the orbit, most peripheral nerve sheath tumours affect the first division of the trigeminal nerve…

[Tracheal neurinoma simulating status asthmaticus in a child].

BACKGROUND: Neurilemmoma is a benign tumor that is rarely located in the trachea. A neurilemmoma in the intrathoracic part of the trachea can mimic severe status asthmaticus. CASE REPORT: A 14 year-old girl was admitted because of persistent signs of status asthmaticus, despite bronchodilator therapy. She had no history of asthma. A worsening of the wheezing while she was in the intensive care unit led to intubation and respiratory support. X-rays showed pneumomediastinum. A dramatic improvement only followed replacement of the intratracheal tube. On the 5th day of the disease, tracheoscopy s…

Digital schwannoma in a skeletally immature child.

Soft tissue neoplasms of the hand are rare in general and even more uncommon in children. The most commonly considered diagnoses include ganglion, inclusion cyst, lipoma, subcutaneous foreign body granuloma, and tendon sheath xanthoma. Aside from pressure sensitivity, masses on the palmar aspect of the hand are often asymptomatic. The case reported here identifies a primary neural neoplasm (neurilemmoma) that involves a small peripheral nerve in the hand of a twelve-year-old child. The patient had no neurologic symptoms and illustrates the need to include neurilemmomas in the differential diag…

Pancreatic schwannoma: A case report and review of literature.

Pancreatic schwannoma is an extremely rare neoplasm, derived from Schwann cells that line the nerve sheaths. It is also referred to as neurilemmoma. The authors report a case of a 46-year-old Thai female who presented with dyspepsia, weight loss and epigastric mass. An examination by ultrasonography and computed tomography (CT) scan revealed a septated cystic tumor in the pancreatic head, 5.8x5.5x5.3 cm in size. Pancreaticoduodenectomy was performed to remove this tumor. A microscopic examination identified proliferating spindle cells that are consistent with neurilemmoma (schwannoma). No comp…

Vagal body tumors: diagnosis and treatment.

This presentation includes a report of four vagal body tumors bringing the total number in the English literature to approximately 80. The diagnosis and treatment of this lesion, its familial incidence and the propensity for multiple secreting or nonsecreting chemodectomas, and appropriate clinical and pathologic studies required will be reviewed in some detail. Appropriate differential diagnostic features will be illustrated by comparison of these tumors with other primary vagal tumors from our experience such as neurofibromas, neurilemmomas, and cystic degeneration of neurilemmomas.

Pediatric intraosseous schwannoma in maxillary sinus: A case report with review of literature.

Neurilemmoma has been defined as a benign, encapsulated neoplasm that arises in the nerve fiber. It originates from the proliferation of Schwann cells in the perineurium causing displacement and compression of the adjacent nerve. This neoplasm is composed primarily of Schwann cells in a poorly collagenized stroma. It can occur in any age group. Neurilemmoma occurs all over the body including the head and neck region. In the head and neck region, 25%-40% of schwannoma cases have been reported. Occurrences of intraoral schwannomas are rare with reported prevalence being 1%. In the present articl…

Recurrent Schwannomatosis of the Hand.

Background: Peripheral nerve sheath tumors (PNSTs) are neoplastic soft tissue masses generated from the abnormal proliferation of Schwann cells. Often, these tumors occur in isolation and are known as schwannomas or neurilemmomas. The presence of multiple schwannomas is known as schwannomatosis. The purpose of this article is 2-fold: (1) to review the relevant literature and describe a unique case of this rare condition; and (2) to emphasize salient clinical considerations in the diagnosis and treatment of schwannomatosis. Methods: In this report, we describe the case of a 52-year-old white ma…

[Neurogenic tumors of the trachea].

To date, 20 cases of solitary neurilemmoma and neurofibroma of the trachea have been reported. We report the symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of a neurilemmoma of the upper trachea in an 8-year-old girl. The presenting symptom is usually progressive stridor. Radiography, without contrast medium, and tomography confirm the diagnosis. The latter should take into account the possible mediastinal involvement by dumb-bell tumours. The tumours appear in all sections of the trachea but usually lie on the back wall. Endoscopy is not always necessary because it carries risks. For most tumours a trache…

Laparoscopic treatment of a series of rare tumors, gastric schwannoma with chronic iron deficiency anemia: A case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Gastric schwannoma is a rare and slow-growing gastrointestinal mesenchymal tumor. Gastric neurilemmoma accounts for less than 1% of all gastric tumors. Without specific clinical manifestations, it is easy to be misdiagnosed before the operation, and rupture and bleeding will lead to persistent anemia in patients. The diagnosis can only be confirmed by pathological examination. CASE PRESENTATION: A 55-year-old woman was admitted to The Second Hospital of Lanzhou University due to abdominal distension, pain, acid regurgitation, and belching. The tumor was completely…

Intraosseous mandibular schwannoma mimicking an odontogenic keratocyst, with a postsurgical pathological fracture.

OBJECTIVE: Schwannomas are slowly growing tumours derived from Schwann cells. We present a clinical case of schwannoma in the mandibular angle. METHOD: Case report and a review of the world literature concerning intraosseous schwannoma of the maxillofacial region. RESULTS: Schwannomas or neurilemmomas are slow-growing, benign neoplasms derived from Schwann cells. Intraoral lesions are unusual and intraosseous schwannomas are even rarer, representing less than 1 per cent of benign primary tumours of the bones. We present a clinical case of schwannoma in the mandibular angle mimicking a kerato…

[Neurilemmomatosis--a sporadic and familial cases].

Three cases of neurilemmomatosis are reported. A 22-year-old man without any relatives with similar symptoms visited our clinic, complaining of multiple skin tumors since the age of 15 and bilateral acoustic nerve symptoms since 19. Physical examination revealed no pigmented or depigmented spots. Histopathological examination of the eight tumors excised from the skin, acoustic nerve and spinal cord showed that these were all neurilemmomas. A 36-year-old man with a 15 year history of multiple skin tumors and one year history of acoustic nerve symptoms was seen at our clinic, revealing no pigmen…

Schwannoma of the submandibular gland.

Neurilemmomas (schwannomas) are solitary neurogenic tumors that arise from cells of the neural sheath. They are slow growing and represent a proliferation of Schwann cells. Extracranial neurogenic tumors of the head and neck are uncommon, with benign tumors occurring with greater frequency than malignant tumors. These tumors often mimic primary or metastatic disease in the head and neck. Schwannoma of the salivary gland is a particularly rare form of an extracranial neurogenic tumor, with most presenting in the parotid gland originating from a peripheral branch of the facial nerve. An unusual …
