Sleep-disordered breathing in early childhood includes a wide array that includes conditions ranging from primary snoring to the most severe forms of obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome. It may be associated to behavioural and cognitive alterations such as learning and memory disorders or problems with attention, even in the milder forms of the disorder. Our aim is to review the clinical manifestations of sleep-disordered breathing in early childhood, focusing on the neurocognitive and behavioural deficits, as well as the pathophysiological mechanisms involved. Sleep-disordered breathing produce

The field of aging and dementia is increasingly preoccupied with identification of the asymptomatic phenotype of Alzheimer disease (AD). A quick glance at historical landmarks in the field indicates that the agenda and priorities of the field have evolved over time. The initial focus of research was dementia. In the late 1980s and 1990s, dementia researchers reported that some elderly persons are neither demented nor cognitively normal. Experts coined various terms to describe the gray zone between normal cognitive aging and dementia, including mild cognitive impairment. Advances made in epide

OBJECTIVE: There is a growing body of evidence on neurocognitive impairment in euthymic bipolar patients, but this issue has been studied mostly in bipolar I disorder, data on bipolar II (BD-II) are scant and discrepant. The two aims of this study were to ascertain whether strictly defined euthymic BD-II patients would present neurocognitive disturbances and to evaluate their impact on functional outcome.
METHOD: Forty-three BD-II patients and 42 demographically and educationally matched healthy subjects were assessed with a comprehensive neuropsychological test battery and with the Social an

OBJECTIVES: Studies into social cognition in psychiatric disorders have recently been expanded to address the question of whether or not theory of mind (ToM), i.e., the ability to represent ones own and others mental states, is impaired in bipolar affective disorder (BPD). Results have been mixed so far, mainly due to possible confounding effects of neurocognition, as well as clinical factors such as acuity and current mood. Here, we explored ToM and its associations with neurocognitive functioning in BPD.
METHODS: A total of 33 patients with bipolar I disorder (of whom 12 were currently depr

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and trichotillomania (hair pulling disorder, HPD) are both considered obsessive-compulsive and related disorders due to some indications of shared etiological and phenomenological characteristics. However, a lack of direct comparisons between these disorders, especially in pediatric samples, limits our understanding of divergent versus convergent characteristics. This study compared neurocognitive functioning between children diagnosed with OCD and HPD. In total, 21 children diagnosed with HPD, 40 diagnosed with OCD, and 29 healthy controls (HCs), along with

BACKGROUND: Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) are both highly prevalent and comorbid psychiatric disorders. Neurocognitive dysfunction has been commonly found in MDD, but the findings in GAD are inconsistent. Few studies have directly compared cognitive performance between GAD and MDD. Therefore, the present study aimed to reveal the similar and distinct cognitive impairments between both disorders.
METHODS: Three non-overlapping and non-comorbid groups were enrolled in the current study including patients with GAD (n = 37), MDD (n = 107) and healthy contr

Background/Objectives: Perioperative neurocognitive disorders (PNDs), including delirium and postoperative cognitive dysfunction, affect 10-50% of elderly surgical patients and are associated with increased morbidity and mortality, as well as substantial healthcare costs. Despite their clinical significance, the underlying mechanisms remain incompletely understood and effective interventions are limited. This narrative review synthesizes current evidence on the pathophysiology, risk factors, and management strategies for PNDs. Methods: We conducted a comprehensive literature review of peer-rev

BACKGROUND: Perioperative neurocognitive disorders (PND) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) are both important aging related cognitive disorders. Accumulating evidence suggests that they share common pathological mechanisms involving Aβ deposition, neuroinflammation, and immunometabolic imbalance. However, the key regulatory molecules linking these two conditions remain unclear. FKBP prolyl isomerase 51 (FKBP51) is an immune regulatory molecule widely involved in inflammation control and metabolic homeostasis maintenance, but its role in PND and AD is still unknown. This study aimed to investigate w

Perioperative neurocognitive disorders (PND) are common and devastating perioperative neurological complications that markedly hinder postoperative rehabilitation and impair long-term quality of life in elderly surgical patients. Oxidative stress and neuroinflammation are well-established core pathogenic drivers of PND, whereas the key molecular mediators bridging perioperative stress and cognitive dysfunction remain poorly elucidated. Glutathione S-transferase Omega 1 (GSTO1) is a multifunctional deglutathionylase that centrally governs intracellular redox homeostasis and inflammatory signal

Perioperative neurocognitive disorders (PND), including postoperative delirium, preoperatively cognitive impairment, postoperative cognitive dysfunction, and delayed neurocognitive recovery, represent common complications following anesthesia and surgery, especially in the elderly. As the global population ages, PND is receiving increasing attention due to its prolonged the hospitalization, reduced quality of life and elevated mortality rate. A growing body of evidence has been suggested that the gut-brain axis, a communication system between the gut microbiota and the neuroinflammation, plays

The Cognitive Functions Dementia (CFD) is a computerized battery to assess the cognitive domains included in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) criteria for neurocognitive disorders. We aimed at examining the psychometric properties and the clinical validity of the CFD for neurocognitive disorders. Psychometric characterization was conducted in healthy individuals, stratified according to age, sex, and education to represent a norming sample. Analyses included structural validity and measurement invariance, assessed through confirmatory factor analyses (CFA) and

Perioperative neurocognitive disorder (pNCD) and stroke are frequent and serious complications following noncardiac surgery, leading to increased mortality and healthcare expenditure. While intraoperative hypotension has long been considered a potentially modifiable risk factor through its impact on cerebral perfusion, a direct role in causing pNCD is now challenged. Large randomized controlled trials, including the recent CogPOISE trial, have demonstrated that strategies targeting higher perioperative mean arterial pressure do not reduce the incidence of delirium, long-term cognitive decline,

In the present study, we investigated the differences in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) orexin-A levels among patients with different neurocognitive disorders, such as mild or moderate to severe Alzheimer's disease (AD; mAD, msAD, respectively), behavioral variants of frontotemporal dementia (bv-FTD), non-fluent primary aphasia (NFPA), and idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH). A total of 214 participants were evaluated (mAD, 45; msAD, 31; bv-FTD, 12; NFPA, 22; iNPH, 13; non-demented elderly controls, 91). The highest CSF orexin-A levels were found in iNPH patients (263.31 ± 56.89 pg/mL).

Despite significant progress in managing HIV infection, HIV - associated neurocognitive disorder (HAND) continues to be a concern even among HIV individuals with well - controlled infection. Current diagnostic strategies, primarily reliant on neuropsychological tests, neuroimaging, and biomarkers from blood and cerebrospinal fluid, alongside combination antiretroviral therapy, form the foundation of HAND management. However, these strategies often fail to identify early or mild HAND, particularly asymptomatic neurocognitive impairment, resulting in delayed diagnosis and intervention. Furthermo

BACKGROUND: Perioperative neurocognitive disorders are often neglected and undiagnosed. There are known risk factors for these disorders (e.g., higher levels of frailty, cognitive decline before surgery). However, these factors are usually not assessed in the daily clinical setting. One of the main reasons for this lack of examination is the absence of a suitable cognitive function test that can be used in acute clinical settings. The primary aim of this study was to determine correlations between preoperative and postoperative scores on three cognitive tests (the Mini Mental State Exam (MMSE)

Our previous findings demonstrated that astrocytic HIF-1α plays a major role in HIV-1 Tat-mediated amyloidosis which can lead to Alzheimer's-like pathology-a comorbidity of HIV-Associated Neurocognitive Disorders (HAND). These amyloids can be shuttled in extracellular vesicles, and we sought to assess whether HIV-1 Tat stimulated astrocyte-derived EVs (ADEVs) containing the toxic amyloids could result in neuronal injury in vitro and in vivo. We thus hypothesized that blocking HIF-1α could likely mitigate HIV-1 Tat-ADEV-mediated neuronal injury. Rat hippocampal neurons when exposed to HIV-1 Tat

HIV-related neurocognitive disorders (HAND) have emerged as a significant concern in the context of HIV infection. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the diagnosis, treatment, and mental health implications associated with HAND. Diagnosis of HAND involves a multifaceted approach, combining clinical assessments, neurocognitive testing, and neuroimaging techniques. Various screening tools and standardized assessments have been developed to aid in the early detection and monitoring of HAND. Timely diagnosis allows for appropriate interventions and personalized treatment strategies.

There is a potential differential effect of sevoflurane compared with propofol on postoperative delirium and other perioperative neurocognitive disorders. More generally, there are perhaps differences between volatile and intravenous anaesthetic agents in their possible impact on perioperative neurocognitive disorders. Strengths and limitations of a recent study in this journal and its contribution to our understanding of the impact of anaesthetic technique on perioperative neurocognitive disorders are discussed.

AIM: The notion of a disturbed self as the core feature of schizophrenia dates back to the founding texts on the illness. Since the development of the psychometric tool for examination of anomalous self-experience (EASE), self-disorders have become accessible to empirical research. Empirical studies have shown that EASE measured self-disorders predict schizophrenia spectrum in prospective studies and consistently show a selective hyper aggregation of self-disorder in schizophrenia and schizotypal disorders. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between self-disorders cogniti
