Melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy: A narrative review of dental aspects.

Melanotic neuroectodermal tumors of infancy (MNTI) are a rare type of benign tumor that affects the head and neck region. MNTI represents (68-80%) of the tumors in the maxillary region. This tumor is usually located in the alveolar crest, skull, mandible, and brain. Although this tumor is considered benign, it can grow rapidly, with a high risk of recurrence and interference with functions of infancy, such as feeding and breathing. It is also frequently harmful to the surrounding soft and hard tissues or adjacent sensitive vital structures. This study aimed to review the pathological, clinical

Mandibular melanotic neuroectodermal tumor of infancy: a role for neoadjuvant chemotherapy.

Melanotic Neuroectodermal Tumor of Infancy (MNTI) is a rare, locally aggressive neoplasm with a predilection for the head and neck area, most commonly occurring in the maxilla. The vast majority of treatment modalities for all cases of MNTI to date have involved surgical intervention only, with just 9.6 % involving some sort of chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or a combination of the prior mentioned modalities. There is very limited information available regarding the use of neoadjuvant chemotherapy, due to its rare nature. In this report, a 4 month old girl presented to our clinic with a chief com

Cerebellopontine angle primitive neuroectodermal tumor mimicking trigeminal schwannoma.

BACKGROUND: Primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNETs) comprise a group of aggressive, poorly differentiated embryonal tumors occurring in central nervous system as well as in peripheral locations. Primary cerebellopontine angle (CPA) PNET is an extremely rare entity. It is important to have knowledge of this pathology and to be able to differentiate it from other commonly occurring CPA tumors, such as vestibular and trigeminal schwannomas. This distinction is essential because of the difference in the overall treatment plan and prognosis. CASE DESCRIPTION: This report describes a case of a you

FDG PET/CT in peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor of the retroperitoneum.

Peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor (pPNET) is a very aggressive neoplasm that predominantly affects children and adolescents with a poor prognosis. A 35-year-old woman presented with right upper abdominal pain for 2 weeks. Abdominal enhanced CT showed a large cystic-solid tumor in the left retroperitoneum, with progressive enhanced papillary projections of the wall. FDG PET/CT showed strong FDG uptake of the cystic wall with SUVmax of 17.2. The patient underwent completed resection of the tumor. pPNET was confirmed by pathology. The high FDG uptake of the tumor may be related to its hi

Paraplegia after chest wall resection for primitive neuroectodermal tumor.

Spinal cord complications are rarely encountered in elective pediatric surgery. We present a patient who became paraplegic after resection of a chest wall tumor. After neoadjuvant radio- and chemotherapy, a 10-year-old girl with primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) of the right chest underwent a right chest wall resection. Ribs #3, 4, 5, and 6 were resected en masse with a pulmonary wedge resection of right upper and middle lobes. To obtain clear margins, the ribs were disarticulated from the vertebral column. Significant bleeding arose when the fourth rib was detached. Presuming an intercos

Primary Ewing sarcoma/peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor of the vulva.

We report a case of Ewing sarcoma/peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor (ES/pPNET) arising in the vulva in a 17-year-old adolescent girl. Primary extraskeletal ES/pPNET is uncommon and only rarely affects the female genital tract. Characteristic histologic features of ES/pPNET were present in this case including a monomorphic population of small round blue cells with cytoplasmic glycogen confirmed by periodic acid-Schiff and were immunohistochemically positive for CD99 in a membranous and Fli-1 in a nuclear pattern. The presence of an EWS/Fli-1 fusion transcript was demonstrated by revers

Primitive neuroectodermal tumor of the breast: immunohistochemistry and fluorescence in situ hybridization.

A case of primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) that developed as a breast lump in a 47-year-old Japanese woman is reported. After fine-needle aspiration (FNA) cytology, a mastectomy was performed. The surgical specimen was a well-circumscribed tumor, 21 x 18 x 18 mm, localized in the breast. The tumor cells were small and round with scant cytoplasm, and proliferated in sheets or solid nests. No intraductal carcinoma component was present. The tumor cells were immunohistochemically positive for neural cell adhesion molecule (CD56), neuron-specific enolase and synaptophysin, and they showed me

[Recurrence of peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor of the orbit with systemic metastases].

CASE REPORT: A six-year-old boy presented with proptosis of the right eye. Imaging studies detected a mass in the medial wall of the right orbit. This mass was biopsied revealing a histopathologic diagnosis of primitive neuroectodermal tumor, so chemotherapy treatment was given. After seven years in remission he presented with a recurrence of the orbital tumor and was found to also have systemic metastases. Treatment with chemotherapy, radiotherapy and orbital exenteration was unsuccessful. DISCUSSION: The orbital occurrence of these tumors is extremely rare. Differentiation from other small

Lipomatous primitive neuroectodermal tumor with a glioblastoma component: a case report.

A case of extracerebellar lipomatous primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) with glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) areas is reported. A 44-year-old woman who had been on antipsychotic agents for schizophrenia complained of hemiparesis and drowsiness. She deteriorated progressively and died 3 months later. The autopsy revealed a huge, ill-defined tumor located from right basal ganglia to brain stem. Microscopically, the tumor consisted of three distinct components: clusters of small primitive cells consistent with PNET, mature lipoma-like islands, and a GBM-like component. Neuronal differentiation

Malignant melanotic neuroectodermal tumor arising from the pineal body.

A case of a melanotic neuroectodermal tumor arising from pineal region of a 4-year-old girl is presented. The tumor had spread diffusely to the meninges, consistent with malignant behavior. Histologically, the tumor consisted primarily of epithelial elements arranged in tubules, cords and nests separated by fibrous vascular tissue in addition to a small neuroblastomatous focus. Melanin pigment was frequently observed in the epithelial tumor cells, and melanin-laden macrophages were also often observed. No teratoid elements were found. Immunohistochemically, tumor cells were positive for neuron

Treatment patterns and outcomes in advanced clear cell sarcoma and gastrointestinal neuroectodermal tumors.

BACKGROUND: Clear cell sarcoma (CCS) and gastrointestinal neuroectodermal tumor (GNET) are ultra-rare soft tissue sarcomas with no established standard of care for advanced disease. Data evaluating outcomes of systemic therapy remain limited. We aimed to evaluate systemic therapy in patients with metastatic CCS/GNET treated at a tertiary referral institution. METHODS: This is a retrospective, single-institution study of patients with metastatic CCS/GNET diagnosed between January 2000 and May 2025. The primary objective was to describe patterns of systemic therapy use and secondary endpoints i

The incidence of brainstem primitive neuroectodermal tumors of childhood based on SEER data.

PURPOSE: Incidence of BS primitive neuroectodermal tumors (BS-PNET) in children is not reported to date. Our main objectives were to estimate the incidence and report the outcome of BS-PNET in children. METHODS: Data were collected using the Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results cancer registry. RESULTS: From 1973 to 2013, we identified 83 pediatric patients (aged 0-21 years). Patients were divided into two age groups (0-3 years and 4-21 years). Median overall survival was 53 months. Patients in the older age group had a significant survival advantage (P < 0.001), as did those who receiv

Cytogenetic and histopathologic studies of congenital supratentorial primitive neuroectodermal tumors: a case report.

Primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNET) represent about 25% of primary central nervous system tumors in childhood, but congenital PNETs are rare. Cytogenetic studies and studies on molecular pathology have identified several genetic alterations in medulloblastoma, but molecular investigations on supratentorial PNETs are infrequent. We present a male newborn with a large congenital PNET of the right cerebral hemisphere and the molecular analysis of the tumor. Tumor tissue was investigated by routine histology and immunohistochemistry. Fluorescence in-situ hybridization was carried out on native

Fine needle aspiration cytology of primitive neuroectodermal tumors. A report of these cases.

Primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) is a small round cell malignancy arising in soft tissue and bone, predominantly in older children and adolescents. We report the cytomorphologic features and findings of ancillary studies of eight fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsies from three patients (7-year-old male, 12-year-old female, 9-year-old female). Two of the biopsies suggested the initial diagnosis of PNET of the chest wall, while the remaining six documented recurrent or metastatic disease. In one of these cases the primary diagnosis made by FNA biopsy enabled the pediatric oncologists to g
