[Different hypermethylation status of RASSF1A in medulloblastoma and supratentorial primitive neuroectodermal tumor].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the epigenetic involvement of RASSF1A in intracranial primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNETs) and compare the methylation patterns between medulloblastoma (MBs) and supratentorial PNETs (SPNETs). METHODS: The methylation status at the promoter regions of RASSF1A was examined by methylation-specific polymerase chain reaction (MSP) in a cohort of 25 primary MBs, 9 primary SPNETs, 3 MB and 2 SPNET cell lines. RASSF1A-deficient PNET cell lines were treated with 5-aza-2'deoxycytidine, a demethylating agent, to explore the relationship between hypermethylation and the gen

[Supratentorial primitive neuroectodermal tumor: a single center experience and comparison with the literature].

Supratentorial primitive neuroectodermal tumors (stPNETs) are malignant tumors. We saw within three years six children with stPNETs. In four of the six children radical resection could be achieved. All had craniospinal irradiation and chemotherapy according to the HIT-91 protocol. The two children with incomplete resection died due to tumor progression after 7 and 10 months. Two of the 4 children with complete tumor resection had local relapses 8 months after diagnosis and died after 14 and 18 months. One child had a diffuse meningeal relapse 12 months after diagnosis. Despite (high-dose) syst

Patterns of failure in relation to radiotherapy fields in supratentorial primitive neuroectodermal tumor.

PURPOSE: Supratentorial primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) accounts for 2-3% of all pediatric brain tumors. We retrospectively reviewed all supratentorial PNET cases treated with radiotherapy (RT) at our institutions. METHODS AND MATERIALS: A total of 25 patients (17 males and 8 females, median age 9 years) were treated with RT between 1980 and 2001. The primary site location was the pineal region in 7 (28%), temporal lobe in 5 (20%), thalamus in 5 (20%), frontal lobe in 4 (16%), parietal lobe in 2 (8%), and suprasellar region in 2 (8%). Five patients (20%) had neuraxis dissemination (M+

Primitive neuroectodermal tumor of the median nerve. Case report with cytogenetic analysis.

The authors describe a malignant peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) that originated in the median nerve in an elderly adult. After the diagnosis was made by biopsy, the patient underwent radical local resection with interpositional vein grafting of the brachial artery. The tumor had the typical appearance of a primitive neural tumor with small, round cells forming rosettes. It stained positively for both the Ewing's sarcoma/peripheral PNET antigen (HBA-71) and neuron-specific enolase, confirming its neural origin. Ultrastructural examination revealed dense core granules and sugg

Congenital cerebral primitive neuroectodermal tumor with astrocytic differentiation and extracranial metastases.

A cerebral primitive neuroectodermal tumor with astrocytic differentiation and extracranial metastases in a 28-day-old infant is reported. The infant presented with a progressively enlarged head, cutaneous lesions in the neck, and enlarged cervical lymph nodes. A computed tomography brain scan demonstrated a giant thalamic tumor with subarachnoid dissemination and hydrocephalus. Biopsy material from the cervical lesions showed a picture of glioma with anaplastic astrocytes. The patient received a ventriculoperitoneal shunt operation and palliative chemotherapy, but died at 3 months of age. Aut

Primitive neuroectodermal tumor: a newly recognized cause of early fetal death.

Reviews in the literature of fetal and neonatal neoplasms deal only with congenital tumors, that is, tumors presenting at or shortly after birth. Virtually nothing is known about neoplasms occurring in the embryonal period or early fetal life. We report five small macerated fetuses with a very primitive embryonal tumor of neuroectodermal origin. The tumor characteristically showed massive vascular permeation. Expulsion of the fetus occurred during the fourth or fifth month of pregnancy. It is suggested that this primitive neuroectodermal tumor is a "new" cause of spontaneous late abortion.

Peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor of the orbit in Graves' ophthalmopathy - A rare presentation.

Graves' ophthalmopathy is the most common cause of both unilateral and bilateral proptoses in adults. Peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor (pPNET) is a small round cell malignant lesion of neuroectodermal origin which very rarely affects the orbit. In this case report, we have discussed about a young woman with existing Graves' ophthalmopathy who presented with worsening proptosis; computed tomography imaging revealed an irregular mass lesion in the right orbit without bone erosion. Biopsy and immunohistochemistry of the mass lesion revealed features of primitive neuroectodermal tumor (P

Ewing's Sarcoma (Primitive Neuroectodermal Tumor) of Seminal Vesicles: A Case Report.

Malignant tumors of the seminal vesicles are rare; they may be of epithelial or mesenchymal origin. Carcinomas are the most common and pelvic sarcoma may be confused with a primary tumor of the seminal vesicles. Little is known of the prognosis and best sequence of treatment in such sarcoma. We report a rare case of extra-skeletal Ewing sarcoma/primitive neuroectodermal tumor of the seminal vesicles in a 54-year-old man who presented with chronic lower abdominal pain, urinary retention, and severe constipation. Pelvic CT scan and MRI confirmed the presence of a soft tissue mass lesion centered

Surgical resection of orbital primitive neuroectodermal tumor without adjuvant chemotherapy.

Primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) of the orbit is a very rare entity. We report a case of a 10-year-old boy having progressive protrusion of the eyeball, restricted ocular motility, ptosis, and ocular pain for 2 months. On examination, a fixed, nontender, firm, hyperemic, nonpulsatile globular mass was palpated in the superomedial quadrant of the orbit. Computed tomography scans of the orbit depicted a well-defined, soft tissue density lesion within the orbit without evidence of any bone defect or erosion. Surgical resection of the encapsulated lesion through anterior orbitotomy followed

Heavy Metal Bioaccumulation in an Atypical Primitive Neuroectodermal Tumor of the Abdominal Wall.

Heavy metals are able to interfere with the function of vital cellular components. Besides in trace heavy metals, which are essential at low concentration for humans, there are heavy metals with a well-known toxic and oncogenic potential. In this study, for the first time in literature, we report the unique adulthood case of an atypical primitive neuroectodermal tumor of the abdominal wall, diagnosed by histology and immunohistochemistry, with the molecular hybridization support. The neoplasia occurred in a patient chronically exposed to a transdermal delivery of heavy metal salts (aluminum an

Peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor of the parotid gland in a child: A case report.

Primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) is a term used to describe a group of highly malignant neoplasms of soft-tissue origin, with varying degrees of divergent differentiation. The occurrence of peripheral PNET in the head and neck region has been reported infrequently in the medical literature. This disease generally occurs in adolescents and young adults, and rarely occurs in children <3 years old. The current study presents an extremely rare case of pPNET of the parotid gland in a 2-year-old male, which had been previously misdiagnosed and treated as a mumps. The lesion showed the characte

Supratentorial primitive neuroectodermal tumor in an adult: a case report and review of the literature.

INTRODUCTION: Supratentorial primitive neuroectodermal tumors predominantly occur in children, and are rare in the adult population. Less than 100 cases of supratentorial primitive neuroectodermal tumor have been reported in adults internationally. Our case study reports this rare incident. CASE PRESENTATION: A 22-year-old Hispanic man presented with headaches, blurry vision, diplopia, intermittent vomiting, and grossly decreased vision. A magnetic resonance image showed a left posterior parietal heterogeneously enhancing mass measuring 4.2cm × 7.2cm × 7.0cm. After craniotomy for resection an

Primary Ewing's sarcoma/primitive neuroectodermal tumor of the urogenital tract in children.

BACKGROUND: Primary Ewing's sarcoma/primitive neuroectodermal tumor (ES/PNET) of urogenital tract is a rare condition with non-specific clinical presentations, which can make it difficult to diagnose. In this study, we summarize the clinical presentation, pathological features, therapeutic strategies, and prognosis of ES/PNET. METHODS: Clinical information on two cases of ES/PNET in the penis and ureter was analyzed, and relevant literature was reviewed. RESULTS: ES/PNET was confirmed pathologically, immunohistochemically and via molecular biology techniques in the penis (n=1) and ureter (n=

Uncommon pleural effusion: pleuropulmonary metastasis from primitive neuroectodermal tumor.

Primitive neuroectodermal tumor is an invasive neoplasm with neuronal differentiation, which frequently results in metastasis in various organs. We report the case of a patient with primitive neuroectodermal tumor whose primary site was the axilla. The patient presented with metastases in the lung, pleura, bone, iliac muscle and bone marrow. We highlight the uncommon finding in the pleural fluid cytology.

Postoperative paraplegia as a result of undiagnosed primitive neuroectodermal tumor, not epidural analgesia.

Postoperative paraplegia is a rare complication after epidural analgesia and often occurs with spinal hematoma or cord injury. We present the case of a 16-year-old girl who suffered from a tumor mass in the neck and abdomen who underwent gynecologic operation. Preoperatively, liver metastasis was found by computed tomography. Pathologic findings revealed that the abdominal mass was an ovarian dermoid cyst. After the operation, the patient complained of paraplegia while receiving epidural analgesia for postoperative pain control. A peripheral primitive neuroectodermal tumor in the thoracic and

Primitive neuroectodermal tumor/Ewing's sarcoma with long-term follow-up.

We have reported a case of primitive neuroectodermal tumor/Ewing's sarcoma (PNET/EWS) in a 32-year-old female who had had no symptoms until the tumor was detected in a general examination after she gave birth. Chest X-ray showed a well-defined, rounded mass in the left lower lung field. Computed tomographic scan of the chest revealed a distinct mass adjacent to the anterolateral thoracic wall. The macroscopic findings had shown a well-capsulated tumor with a stalk emanating from the thoracic wall. PNET/EWS was histologically diagnosed. The tumor was composed of atypical, small round cells. Primitive neuroectodermal tumor of the cervix: a clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical study of two cases.

Two cases of primary primitive neuroectodermal tumors of the cervix are presented. The two female patients are 35 and 51 years of age who presented with abnormal uterine bleeding of several weeks' duration. On gynecologic examination, a mass in the cervical area was palpated and a biopsy was obtained. The initial biopsy was interpreted as possible small cell carcinoma in both women. A radical hysterectomy was performed in both patients. Grossly, in both cases, the uterine cervix showed an ill-defined tumor involving the ectocervix and endocervix, measuring 3.0 and 4.0 cm in greatest dimension,
