Neurofeedback Training of the Control Network in Children Improves Brain Computer Interface Performance.

In the past 20 years, neural engineering has made unprecedented progress in the interpretation of brain information (e.g., brain-computer interfaces) and in neuromodulation (e.g., electromagnetic stimulation and neurofeedback). However, there has been little research aiming to improve the performance of brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) using neuromodulation. The present study presents a novel design for a neurofeedback training (NFT) method to improve the operation of a steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP)-based BCI and further explores its underlying mechanisms. The use of NFT to upre

19 Channel Z-Score and LORETA Neurofeedback: Does the Evidence Support the Hype?

Neurofeedback is a well-investigated treatment for ADHD and epilepsy, especially when restricted to standard protocols such as theta/beta, slow cortical potentials and sensori-motor rhythm neurofeedback. Advances in any field are welcome and other techniques are being pursued. Manufacturers and clinicians are marketing 'superior' neurofeedback approaches including 19 channel Z-score neurofeedback (ZNFB) and 3-D LORETA neurofeedback (with or without Z-scores; LNFB). We conducted a review of the empirical literature to determine if such claims were warranted. This review included the above searc

Visual imagery during real-time fMRI neurofeedback from occipital and superior parietal cortex.

Visual imagery has been suggested to recruit occipital cortex via feedback projections from fronto-parietal regions, suggesting that these feedback projections might be exploited to boost recruitment of occipital cortex by means of real-time neurofeedback. To test this prediction, we instructed a group of healthy participants to perform peripheral visual imagery while they received real-time auditory feedback based on the BOLD signal from either early visual cortex or the medial superior parietal lobe. We examined the amplitude and temporal aspects of the BOLD response in the two regions. More

Learning receptive awareness via neurofeedback in stressed healthcare providers: a prospective pilot investigation.

OBJECTIVE: Because physicians and nurses are commonly stressed, Bispectral Index™ (BIS) neurofeedback, following trainer instructions, was used to learn to lower the electroencephalography-derived BIS value, indicating that a state of receptive awareness (relaxed alertness) had been achieved. RESULTS: Ten physicians/nurses participated in 21 learning days with 9 undergoing ≤ 3 days. The BIS-nadir for the 21 days was decreased (88.7) compared to baseline (97.0; p < 0.01). From 21 wellbeing surveys, moderately-to-extremely rated stress responses were a feeling of irritation 38.1%; nervousness 1

The Effect of EEG Neurofeedback Training on Sport Performance: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Neurofeedback training (NFT) has emerged as a promising technique for enhancing sports performance by enabling individuals to self-regulate their neural activity. However, only 53% of the 13 included studies, all of which published before 2021, in the latest meta-analyses of NFT and motor performance focused on motor performance outcomes. Due to the rapid development of neurofeedback, 8 high-quality articles were published in 2023-2024 alone. Therefore, there is a need for a new meta-analysis to update the impact of NFT on sports performance. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we hav

[The potential of neurofeedback control in treating insomnia and improving sleep quality (a systematic review)].

Chronic sleep disturbance has a pronounced adverse impact on a person's quality of life and physical and mental well-being. Despite the high prevalence of the disorder and the need for therapeutic interventions, the accessibility and effectiveness of conventional insomnia treatments remain limited. The electroencephalography (EEG)-neurofeedback control method is based on objective brain activity data to teach the patient self-regulation. This study performed a systematic analysis of current data on the use of neurofeedback technology for the treatment of sleep disorders, assessing the method's

Neurocognitive, Clinical and Reelin Activity in Rehabilitation Using Neurofeedback Therapy in Patients with Schizophrenia.

Introduction: Reelin is a neuropeptide responsible for the migration and positioning of pyramidal neurons, interneurons, and Purkinje cells. In adulthood, it still supports neuroplasticity, especially dendritic spines formation and glutamatergic neurotransmission. Genetic studies have confirmed the involvement of reelin system failure in the etiopathogenesis of mental diseases, including schizophrenia. Given the role of reelin in brain cytoarchitectonics and the regularly observed reduction in its activity in prefrontal areas in cases of schizophrenia, dysfunction of the reelin pathway fits th

Effectiveness of Neurofeedback Therapy Adjunct to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in Agoraphobia: A Case Study.

Agoraphobia has been defined as marked fear or anxiety being in enclosed or open places, using public transportation, and being in a crowd or outside of home alone. Such individuals make active attempts to avoid those places which cause intense distress. The neuronal areas that play a significant role in agoraphobia are uncinate fasciculus, which connects the prefrontal lobe and amygdala and various alterations in anterior cingulate cortex, insula, amygdala, and lateral prefrontal cortex. Neurofeedback is a type of biofeedback which teaches self-control of brain functions by measuring brain wa

Real-time fMRI and EEG neurofeedback: A perspective on applications for the rehabilitation of spatial neglect.

Spatial neglect is a neuropsychological syndrome characterized by a failure to orient, perceive, and act toward the contralesional side of the space after brain injury. Neglect is one of the most frequent and disabling neuropsychological syndromes following right-hemisphere damage, often persisting in the chronic phase and responsible for a poor functional outcome at hospital discharge. Different rehabilitation approaches have been proposed over the past 60 years, with a variable degree of effectiveness. In this point-of-view article, we describe a new rehabilitation technique for spatial negl

Using Neurofeedback to Restore Inter-Hemispheric Imbalance: A Study Protocol for Adults With Dyslexia.

Neurofunctional models of developmental dyslexia (DD) point out disruption of the left-lateralized reading network. In individuals with DD, the left temporo-parietal (TP) regions are underactivated during reading tasks and a dysfunctional activation of the contralateral regions is reported. After a successful reading intervention, left TP lateralization was found to be increased in children with DD. Previous studies measured the effect of modulating the excitability of the left TP cortex using non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) in individuals with reading difficulties, showing significant r

On the need to better specify the concept of "control" in brain-computer-interfaces/neurofeedback research.

Aiming at a better specification of the concept of "control" in brain-computer-interfaces (BCIs) and neurofeedback (NF) research, we propose to distinguish "self-control of brain activity" from the broader concept of "BCI control", since the first describes a neurocognitive phenomenon and is only one of the many components of "BCI control". Based on this distinction, we developed a framework based on dual-processes theory that describes the cognitive determinants of self-control of brain activity as the interplay of automatic vs. controlled information processing. Further, we distinguish betwe

A Feasibility Study of Real-Time FMRI with Neurofeedback of Motor Performance in Cerebellar Ataxia.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Neurodegenerative cerebellar ataxia (CA) is a movement disorder caused by progressive cell death in the cerebellum. Motor imagery represents a potential therapeutic tool to improve motor function by "exercising" brain regions associated with movement, without the need for overt activity. This study assessed the feasibility of combining motor imagery with real-time functional magnetic resonance imaging neurofeedback (rt-fMRI-NF) to improve motor function in CA. METHODS: During finger tapping conditions, 16 participants with CA pushed a button at the same frequency in tim

Effect of EEG neurofeedback therapy on addiction disorders: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Recently, electroencephalogram neurofeedback (EEG-NF), a non-invasive neuromodulation technique, has shown promising potential in treating addiction disorders. However, the heterogeneity of clinical populations and research methodologies make it challenging to reach consistent conclusions regarding its efficacy. This meta-analysis investigated the therapeutic effects of EEG-NF on addiction disorders, including both substance and behavioral addictions. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted in PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase and Web of Science, including 17 randomized

The Clinical Impact of Real-Time fMRI Neurofeedback on Emotion Regulation: A Systematic Review.

Emotion dysregulation has long been considered a key symptom in multiple psychiatric disorders. Difficulties in emotion regulation have been associated with neural dysregulation in fronto-limbic circuits. Real-time fMRI-based neurofeedback (rt-fMRI-NFB) has become increasingly popular as a potential treatment for emotional dysregulation in psychiatric disorders, as it is able to directly target the impaired neural circuits. However, the clinical impact of these rt-fMRI-NFB protocols in psychiatric populations is still largely unknown. Here we provide a comprehensive overview of primary studies

Neurofeedback Effect on Symptoms of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) encompasses various psychological symptoms and a high early dropout rate due to treatment unresponsiveness. In recent years, neurofeedback has been implemented to control PTSD's psychological symptoms through physiological brain regulation. However, a comprehensive analysis concerning its efficacy is lacking. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine neurofeedback's effect on reducing PTSD symptoms. We analyzed randomized and non-randomized controlled trials (RCTs) from 1990 to July 2020, evaluating neurofeedback treatments
