Evidence of Brucella sp. infection in marine mammals stranded along the coast of southern New England.

After recent isolations of Brucella sp. from pinnipeds and cetaceans, a survey was initiated to investigate the prevalence of Brucella sp. infections and serologic evidence of exposure in marine mammals stranded along the coasts of Connecticut and Rhode Island. One hundred and nineteen serum samples from four species of cetaceans and four species of pinnipeds were collected from 1985 to 2000 and tested for antibodies to Brucella sp. using the brucellosis card test, buffered acidified plate antigen test, and rivanol test. In addition, 20 of these were necropsied between 1998 and 2000, with lymp

Gastrointestinal parasites of the New England cottontail rabbit (Sylvilagus transitionalis) and eastern cottontail rabbit (Sylvilagus floridanus) in the Hudson Valley, New York.

The New England cottontail rabbit (NEC, Sylvilagus transitionalis) population has decreased dramatically in New York, USA, and the role of parasites in limiting the population has never been examined. The closely related and sympatric eastern cottontail rabbit (EC, Sylvilagus floridanus) was introduced into the range of NEC by humans and is currently thriving. This study aimed to investigate gastrointestinal parasites of the NEC and the EC and compare their parasite communities. Fecal pellets from 195 NEC and 125 EC were collected from the Hudson Valley, New York, in the winter of 2013-2014. C

The Northern New England Rapid Deployment Valve Experience: Survival and Procedural Outcomes From 2015 to 2021.

OBJECTIVE: The optimal approach and choice of initial aortic valve replacement (AVR) is evolving in the growing era of transcatheter AVR. Further survival and hemodynamic data are needed to compare the emerging role of rapid deployment (rdAVR) versus stented (sAVR) valve options for AVR. METHODS: The Northern New England Cardiovascular Database was queried for patients undergoing either isolated AVR or AVR + coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) with rdAVR or sAVR aortic valves between 2015 and 2021. Exclusion criteria included endocarditis, mechanical valves, dissection, emergency case stat

Concussion Experiences in New England Private Preparatory High School Students Who Played Sports or Recreational Activities.

BACKGROUND: Sports- and recreation-related (SRR) activities are a major cause of adolescent concussions. Most adolescent SRR concussion research has been conducted among public school students. As private schools are qualitatively different from public schools (eg, location, socioeconomic status, sports played), this study explores the concussion experiences of a large group of private high school students. METHODS: We surveyed 2047 New England private preparatory high school students who played sports or engaged in a recreational activity in 2018 about the sports they played, and their self-

Epidemiological trends of oropharyngeal and oral cavity squamous cell carcinomas in Northern New England, 2000-2013.

BACKGROUND: This study examines the epidemiological trends of oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) and oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OCSCC) in Northern New England. METHODS: Data were obtained from the Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont cancer registries. The age-standardized incidence rates (ASIR), age-specific incidence rates, and annual percentage changes (APC) for OPSCC and OCSCC were calculated using Joinpoint regression. RESULTS: The overall ASIR for OPSCC in Northern New England increased by 54.2% from 2000 to 2013 with an increase of 61.5% and 27.3% in men and women, re

Epidemiology of Group A Streptococcal bacteraemia in Hunter New England Local Health District, 2008 to 2019.

Invasive Group A Streptococcal infection (iGAS) is an uncommon but serious infection with Streptococcus pyogenes in a normally sterile body site. Manifestations include bacteraemia, necrotising fasciitis and toxic shock syndrome with attendant serious morbidity and mortality. An increasing incidence of iGAS has been observed in some regions of Australia. iGAS became a nationally notifiable condition from 1 July 2021. To determine if regional incidence has increased, and to identify priority populations, we undertook a retrospective data analysis of Group A Streptococcal (GAS) bacteraemia cases

Characteristics that define high risk in carotid endarterectomy from the Vascular Study Group of New England.

OBJECTIVE: The Stenting with Angioplasty and Protection in Patients at High Risk for Endarterectomy (SAPPHIRE) trial compared carotid endarterectomy (CEA) to carotid artery stenting (CAS) among high-risk patients using a model of risk that has not been validated by previous publications. The objective of our study was to determine the accuracy of this high-risk model and to determine the true risk factors that result in patients being at high risk for CEA. METHODS: Prospectively collected data for 3098 CEAs between 2003 and 2011 at 20 Vascular Surgery Group of New England (VSGNE) centers were

Emerging Cases of Powassan Virus Encephalitis in New England: Clinical Presentation, Imaging, and Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND: Powassan virus (POWV) is a rarely diagnosed cause of encephalitis in the United States. In the Northeast, it is transmitted by Ixodes scapularis, the same vector that transmits Lyme disease. The prevalence of POWV among animal hosts and vectors has been increasing. We present 8 cases of POWV encephalitis from Massachusetts and New Hampshire in 2013-2015. METHODS: We abstracted clinical and epidemiological information for patients with POWV encephalitis diagnosed at 2 hospitals in Massachusetts from 2013 to 2015. We compared their brain imaging with those in published findings from

Evaluation of the risk for Tay-Sachs disease in individuals of French Canadian ancestry living in new England.

BACKGROUND: The assessment of risk for Tay-Sachs disease (TSD) in individuals of French Canadian background living in New England is an important health issue. In preliminary studies of the enzyme-defined carrier frequency for TSD among Franco-Americans in New England, we found frequencies (1:53) higher than predicted from the incidence of infantile TSD in this region. We have now further evaluated the risk for TSD in the Franco-American population of New England. METHODS: Using a fluorescence-based assay for beta-hexosaminidase activity, we determined the carrier frequencies for TSD in 2783

Autosomal dominant familial spastic paraplegia: description of a large New England family and a study of management.

A large New England family with autosomal dominant familial spastic paraplegia (ADFSP) is described. In a pedigree of 173 family members, 71 affected individuals were identified. 16 cases examined by the authors are described with regard to the natural history of ADFSP in this family, and a staging system for following progress and planning interventions is proposed. Three illustrative cases are presented. In this family, ADFSP was found to have a homogeneous clinical course, with nearly complete penetrance. Onset, with involvement limited to the lower extremities, occurred by three years of a

Pneumococcal vaccination for new residents entering older adult care homes in England: national observational surveillance study.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) increases rapidly with age. In the UK, adults aged 65 years are eligible for the 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPV23) as part of the national immunisation programme, and a 20-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV20) was recently licensed for adults. Residents of care homes for older adults have a higher risk of IPD and death than the general population. We estimated the potential effect of an additional dose of PPV23 or PCV20 for new residents entering older adult care homes. METHODS: In this observational

Breastfeeding and Early Infant Feeding Practices Among Women in the Hunter New England Region of New South Wales, Australia: A Cross Sectional Study.

ISSUE ADDRESSED: Exclusive breastfeeding to 6 months of age is recommended. Currently, there is a lack of Australian data exploring infant feeding behaviours and the sources of information women use to guide infant feeding decisions. This study aimed to describe (i) infant feeding practices (breastfeeding, infant formula/other fluids, introduction of solids) of women with infants aged 6-8 months; and (ii) the information sources women use most frequently and find most helpful to make decisions regarding infant feeding practices. METHODS: Between August and October 2021, 356 mother-infant dyad

SARS-CoV-2 Surveillance in Free-Ranging Wildlife in New England and Virginia, United States, 2022-2025.

Since its emergence in 2019, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has infected a wide range of animal species, including wildlife. Although SARS-CoV-2 infection has been widely reported in wildlife, particularly in white-tailed deer (WTD; Odocoileus virginianus) across the United States, data on viral circulation in New England wildlife remain limited. Here, we investigated active SARS-CoV-2 infection and serological evidence of previous exposure in free-ranging wildlife from New England and Virginia. We examined samples from 1646 animals representing 29 wildlife specie

Enhancing MMR vaccination surveillance in England: Comparing and contrasting new individual-level and existing aggregate data sources.

INTRODUCTION: Cover of Vaccination Evaluated Rapidly (COVER), ImmForm's early childhood baseline (ImmForm), and the Immunisation Information System (IIS) are data sources used by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) to monitor vaccinations in England. MMR vaccination statistics from these sources are publicly available; however, their concordance is currently unverified. This risks ambiguous and contradictory reporting by national and local health users, which could impact outbreak analysis, interventions, and efforts to reduce vaccination inequalities. This study quantifies the statistical c
