COVID in New York City, the epicenter: A New York University perspective and COVID in Duluth, the Bold North: A University of Minnesota perspective.

In the first part of this dual commentary, perspectives are gathered from students at New York University. COVID in New York City is compared with the trauma of the World Trade Center. Triggers, racism, concerns, acts of kindness, and the future are considered for both. The second part of the commentary is written in juxtaposition to the New York City perspective by sharing the Upper Midwest experiences of this COVID-19 pandemic period, particularly in the small city of Duluth. Perspectives are gathered over time from students at the University of Minnesota, Duluth. The Minnesota stories are p

Update: mumps outbreak - New York and New Jersey, June 2009-January 2010.

State and local health departments, in collaboration with CDC, continue to investigate a mumps outbreak that began in New York in June 2009. The index case occurred in a boy aged 11 years who had returned on June 17 from a trip to the United Kingdom, where approximately 7,400 reports of laboratory-confirmed mumps were received by the Health Protection Agency in 2009. He then attended a New York summer camp for tradition-observant Jewish boys, where he became symptomatic on June 28. Subsequently, other camp attendees and a staff member were reported to have mumps, and transmission continued in

West nile virus antibodies in bats from New Jersey and New York.

Eighty-three serum samples were obtained from big brown (Eptesicus fuscus), little brown (Myotis lucifugus), and northern long-eared (Myotis septentriotalis) bats (Chiroptera: Vespertilionidae), from New Jersey and New York (USA) between July and October 2002. Samples were analyzed for neutralizing antibodies to West Nile virus (WNV) and St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) virus. One little brown bat and one northern long-eared bat tested positive for WNV neutralizing antibodies. No bats had antibodies to SLE virus. This was the first large-scale investigation of WNV infection in bats in New Jersey.

Adolescent suicide in New York City: plenty of room for new research.

The act of adolescent suicide continues to threaten adolescent populations in New York City (NYC). Consistent positive correlations have been found between a plethora of risk factors present in NYC adolescent populations and suicidal ideations and behaviors. Psychiatric conditions that may contribute to the rate of adolescent suicide in NYC include depression, bipolar disorder, substance abuse and schizophrenia. Unique factors that have been found to contribute to increased rates of completed suicides in NYC include the phenomena of railway suicides and suicide tourism. Homelessness and income

Human West Nile virus surveillance--Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York, 2000.

West Nile virus (WNV), a mosquitoborne arbovirus identified in New York in 1999, has become enzootic in the northeastern United States, affecting humans, birds, horses, and other mammals. Although no human WNV infection was identified in Connecticut or New Jersey in 1999, 62 persons with WNV illness, including seven deaths, were detected in New York City (NYC) and nearby New York counties. In 2000, these jurisdictions implemented active surveillance (AS) and enhanced passive surveillance (EPS) to detect human illness; 21 persons were identified with acute WNV infection (14 in New York, six in

Pathology of fatal West Nile virus infections in native and exotic birds during the 1999 outbreak in New York City, New York.

West Nile fever caused fatal disease in humans, horses, and birds in the northeastern United States during 1999. We studied birds from two wildlife facilities in New York City, New York, that died or were euthanatized and were suspected to have West Nile virus infections. Using standard histologic and ultrastructural methods, virus isolation, immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization and reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction, we identified West Nile virus as the cause of clinical disease, severe pathologic changes, and death in 27 birds representing eight orders and 14 species. An Occurrence of Mass Psychogenic Illness: LeRoy, New York.

Mass psychogenic illness (MPI), also known as mass sociogenic illness, is a functional neurologic symptom disorder affecting multiple people simultaneously. This study presents a pediatric MPI outbreak involving abrupt-onset tics in LeRoy, NY, during 2011-2012. The analysis provides diagnostic evidence and highlights challenges with diagnosing MPI. Patients presented with tics evolving into syncope, psychogenic nonepileptic seizure, and migraine. Laboratory test types (n = 64) were evaluated, with n = 32 of 64 yielding abnormal results. Deviations were reported in 5% intervals for quantitative

Improved HIV Preexposure Prophylaxis Uptake in New York City.

Preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) prevention is a highly effective tool, but it is underutilized, and significant inequities exist regarding which populations are able to access PrEP. Although most PrEP care occurs in specialty settings, such as sexual health and HIV clinics, most individuals eligible for PrEP are seen in primary care; this imbalance represents an opportunity to expand PrEP access. New York City Health and Hospitals (NYC H+H) is a municipal health care system that provides primary and specialty care across the five boroughs of New York City.

Spatiotemporal trends in bed bug metrics: New York City.

Bed bug outbreaks pose a major challenge in urban environments and cause significant strain on public resources. Few studies have systematically analyzed this insect epidemic or the potential effects of policies to combat bed bugs. Here we use three sources of administrative data to characterize the spatial-temporal trends of bed bug inquiries, complaints, and reports in New York City. Bed bug complaints have significantly decreased (p < 0.01) from 2014-2020, the absolute number of complaints per month dropping by half (875 average complaints per month to 440 average complaints per month); con

Powassan Encephalitis: A Case Report from New York, USA.

BACKGROUND: Powassan is a positive-sense, single-stranded, enveloped RNA virus that is a tick-borne Flavivirus, transmitted by Ixodes species, with groundhogs being the usual mammalian host. The virus is endemic to North America, with peak transmission during the summer and fall. The incubation period is 7-34 days, followed by a prodrome of flu-like symptoms. Although most infected individuals are asymptomatic, the virus can penetrate the CNS to produce a viral encephalitis. The key to the diagnosis is a positive serology. RESULTS: The patient is a 62-year-old male with a past history of a ri

Feline and Canine Rabies in New York State, USA.

In New York State, domestic animals are no longer considered rabies vector species, but given their ubiquity with humans, rabies cases in dogs and cats often result in multiple individuals requiring post-exposure prophylaxis. For over a decade, the New York State rabies laboratory has variant-typed these domestic animals to aid in epidemiological investigations, determine exposures, and generate demographic data. We produced a data set that outlined vaccination status, ownership, and rabies results. Our data demonstrate that a large percentage of felines submitted for rabies testing were not v

Chagas Disease in the New York City Metropolitan Area.

BACKGROUND: Chagas disease, caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, once considered a disease confined to Mexico, Central America, and South America, is now an emerging global public health problem. An estimated 300 000 immigrants in the United States are chronically infected with T. cruzi. However, awareness of Chagas disease among the medical community in the United States is poor. METHODS: We review our experience managing 60 patients with Chagas disease in hospitals throughout the New York City metropolitan area and describe screening, clinical manifestations, EKG findings, imaging, and

Impacts of classifying New York City students as overweight.

US schools increasingly report body mass index (BMI) to students and their parents in annual fitness "report cards." We obtained 3,592,026 BMI reports for New York City public school students for 2007-2012. We focus on female students whose BMI puts them close to their age-specific cutoff for categorization as overweight. Overweight students are notified that their BMI "falls outside a healthy weight" and they should review their BMI with a health care provider. Using a regression discontinuity design, we compare those classified as overweight but near to the overweight cutoff to those whose B

Lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus meningitis, New York, NY, USA, 2009.

We describe a case of lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) meningitis in a New York, NY, resident who had no apparent risk factors. Clues leading to the diagnosis included aseptic meningitis during winter and the finding of hypoglycorrachia and lymphocytosis in the cerebrospinal fluid. LCMV continues to be an underdiagnosed zoonotic disease.

Simian malaria in a U.S. traveler--New York, 2008.

Four species of intraerythrocytic protozoa of the genus Plasmodium (P. falciparum, P. vivax, P. ovale, and P. malariae) are known to cause malaria in humans. However, recent reports from Asia suggest the possibility that a fifth malaria species, Plasmodium knowlesi, is emerging as an important zoonotic human pathogen. Although more than 20 species of Plasmodium can infect nonhuman primates, until recently, naturally acquired human infections of simian malaria were viewed as rare events lacking public health significance. When viewed by light microscopy (the gold standard for laboratory diagnos
