Flame-retardant polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are environmental contaminants. Deca-BDE is increasingly used commercially, but little is known about the long-term fate and impact of its major component, decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209), on the soil environment. In this study, we investigated the fate and ecological effect of BDE-209 over 4 years in outdoor lysimeters in a field planted with a rice-wheat rotation. BDE-209 and six lower-brominated PBDEs (BDE-28, -47, -99, -153, -154, and -183) were detected in soil layers of the test lysimeter. We calculated an average BDE-209 migration

Nitrogen, although abundant in the atmosphere, is paradoxically a limited resource for multicellular organisms. In the Animalia, biological nitrogen fixation has solely been demonstrated in termites. We found that all individuals of field-collected Mediterranean fruit flies (Ceratitis capitata) harbour large diazotrophic enterobacterial populations that express dinitrogen reductase in the gut. Moreover, nitrogen fixation was demonstrated in isolated guts and in live flies and may significantly contribute to the fly's nitrogen intake. The presence of similar bacterial consortia in additional in

Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) represents an essential neuropsychological disorder resulting from liver dysfunction that is mainly caused by disorders of ammonia elimination, hyperammonemia, oxidative stress, and inflammation in the brain. Even with modern methods of treatment directed at lowering ammonia levels in plasma, HE continues to be characterized by incomplete metabolic alterations. Due to new data regarding metabolic processes, the significance of the proline cycle and its participation in nitrogen transportation have been discovered recently. Tropical peatlands significantly influence local and global carbon and nitrogen cycles, yet they face growing pressure from anthropogenic activities. Land use changes, such as peatland forests conversion to oil palm plantations, affect the soil microbiome and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. However, the temporal dynamics of microbial community changes and their role as GHG indicators are not well understood. This study examines the dynamics of peat chemistry, soil microbial communities, and GHG emissions from 2016 to 2020 in a logged-over secondary peat swamp forest in Sarawak, Malaysia, which

Spent mushroom substrate (SMS) return is a vital strategy for agricultural waste recycling and soil fertility improvement, yet its ecological impacts of duration remain poorly understood. This study employed metagenomic sequencing to explore soil fertility, microbial dynamics, and nitrogen cycling across different SMS return durations (0, 1, and 3 years) within rice-mushroom crop rotation systems. Soil nutrients (organic matter, total nitrogen, total phosphorus) initially decreased and then increased throughout the rice growth cycle. The one-year return (y1) induced early nutrient depletion, w

Nitrate content of surface waters results from complex mixing of multiple sources, whose signatures can be modified through N reactions occurring within the different compartments of the whole catchment. Despite this complexity, the determination of nitrate origin is the first and crucial step for water resource preservation. Here, for the first time, we combined at the catchment scale stable isotopic tracers (δ15N and δ18O of nitrate and δ11B) and fecal indicators to trace nitrate sources and pathways to the stream. We tested this approach on two rivers in an agricultural region of SW France.

Due to widespread nitrogen limitation, reactive nitrogen input is expected to stimulate vegetation carbon fixation, thus potentially offsetting the decomposition-induced soil carbon losses. However, this projection is largely based on short-term measurements. The crucial question is whether such responses persist over time. Combining a decade-long nitrogen-addition experiment in an alpine grassland with biochemical and plant metabolomics analyses, we showed that a decade of nitrogen addition elicited only a transient increase in net ecosystem productivity (NEP; balance between ecosystem carbon

In arid environments such as deserts, nitrogen is often the most limiting nutrient for biological activity. The majority of the ecosystem nitrogen flux is typically thought to be driven by production and loss of reactive nitrogen species by microorganisms in the soil. We found that high soil-surface temperatures (greater than 50 degrees C), driven by solar radiation, are the primary cause of nitrogen loss in Mojave Desert soils. This abiotic pathway not only enables the balancing of arid ecosystem nitrogen budgets, but also changes our view of global nitrogen cycling and the predicted impact o

The defect in nitrogen excretion in patients with inborn errors of urea synthesis can be controlled by exploiting the biosynthetic pathways of readily excretable non-urea metabolites which contain nitrogen derived from ammonium, alanine, glutamate, and glutamine. Two classes of such metabolites are the urea-cycle intermediates--including citrulline, argininosuccinic acid, and arginine--and the aminoacid acylation products--hippuric acid (the glycine conjugate of benzoic acid) and phenylactylglutamine (the glutamine conjugate of phenylactic acid). Thus the urea cycle may serve as a model for th

Emission and plant uptake of atmospheric nitrogen oxides (NO + NO(2)) significantly influence regional climate change by regulating the oxidative chemistry of the lower atmosphere, species composition and the recycling of carbon and nutrients, etc. Plant uptake of nitrogen dioxide (NO(2)) is concentration-dependent and species-specific, and covaries with environmental factors. An important factor determining NO(2) influx into leaves is the replenishment of the substomatal cavity. The apoplastic chemistry of the substomatal cavity plays crucial roles in NO(2) deposition rates and the tolerance

Glycyrrhiza uralensis is a highly valued medicinal species worldwide. However, a paradox arises in its cultivation in that high nitrogen fertilization boosts yield at the expense of root quality, a problem linked to nitrogen's regulation of tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle-driven respiration. It remains unclear how different nitrogen forms coordinate respiratory and primary metabolism. We examined the regulatory mechanisms of nitrate (NO3-) versus ammonium (NH4+) on these processes in cultivated G. uralensis by supplying seedlings with varying concentrations of K15NO3 or (15NH4)2SO4 in a modifie

Green manuring can improve soil fertility and sustain rice productivity, yet its effects on rhizosphere metabolite-microbiome interactions regulating soil nitrogen pools remain unclear. Based on a six-year field experiment in the green manure-rice rotation system, we investigated how green manure combined with reduced nitrogen fertilization regulated soil nitrogen pool, enzyme activities, rhizosphere metabolites and microbial communities along the soil-root continuum. Green manuring combined with 20% reduction of nitrogen fertilizer (GM2) increased rice yield by approximately 8.7% and effectiv

Microbial life permeates Earth's critical zone and has likely inhabited nearly all our planet's surface and near subsurface since before the beginning of the sedimentary rock record. Given the vast time that Earth has been teeming with life, do astrobiologists truly understand what geological features untouched by biological processes would look like? In the search for extraterrestrial life in the Universe, it is critical to determine what constitutes a biosignature across multiple scales, and how this compares with "abiosignatures" formed by nonliving processes. Developing standards for abiot

Natural nitrogen cycle has been severely disrupted by anthropogenic activities. The overuse of N-containing fertilizers induces the increase of nitrate level in surface and ground waters, and substantial emission of nitrogen oxides causes heavy air pollution. Nitrogen gas, as the main component of air, has been used for mass ammonia production for over a century, providing enough nutrition for agriculture to support world population increase. In the last decade, researchers have made great efforts to develop ammonia processes under ambient conditions to combat the intensive energy consumption

Global-scale N-oxide contamination of groundwater within aquifers occurs due to the widespread use of N-bearing fertilizers and chemicals, threatening both human and environmental health. However, the conversion of these pollutants in active nitrogen (N) cycling processes in the subsurface biosphere still remains unclear. This study investigates the global occurrence of anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) in aquifers, where anammox was found to be turned on and off between saturated and unsaturated soil horizons, and contributed 36.8-79.5% to N loss in saturated soil horizons, the remainder

The diazotrophic cyanobacterium, Trichodesmium, is an integral component of the marine nitrogen cycle and contributes significant amounts of new nitrogen to oligotrophic, tropical/subtropical ocean surface waters. Trichodesmium forms macroscopic, fusiform (tufts), spherical (puffs) and raft-like colonies that provide a pseudobenthic habitat for a host of other organisms including marine invertebrates, microeukaryotes and numerous other microbes. The diversity and activity of denitrifying bacteria found in association with the colonies was interrogated using a series of molecular-based methodol

The increasing coexistence of microplastics and metals in agricultural soils poses a profound threat to ecosystem health, yet the mechanisms through which combined pollution affects nitrogen cycling remain poorly understood. This study investigated the influence of three polylactic acid (PLA) particle sizes (4 mm, 150 μm, and 500 nm) at a concentration of 1%, individually and in combination with cadmium (Cd, 3.0 mg/kg), on nitrogen transformation in the pea-soil system. Results showed that nano-PLA significantly promoted pea growth, for example, increasing biomass by 11.6% (3.19 g), compared t

Nitrogen scavengers play a critical role in treating acute and chronic hyperammonemia, especially in urea cycle disorders (UCDs), where impaired ammonia detoxification leads to toxic nitrogen accumulation. These agents complement low-protein diets and urea cycle intermediates. Sodium benzoate and sodium phenylacetate are the main scavengers, conjugating with glycine and glutamine to form hippurate and phenylacetylglutamine, which are excreted in urine. This therapeutic approach, introduced in the 1980s, was based on early findings linking benzoate to reduced urea excretion. Nitrogen scavengers

Light and nitrogen availability are basic requirements for photosynthesis. Changing in light intensity and nitrogen concentration may require adaptive physiological and life process changes in phytoplankton cells. Our previous study demonstrated that two Thalassiosira species exhibited, respectively, distinctive physiological responses to light and nitrogen stresses. Transcriptomic analyses were employed to investigate the mechanisms behind the different physiological responses observed in two diatom species of the genus Thalassiosira. The results indicate that the congeneric species are diffe

Nitrogen regulates primary productivity across much of the biosphere, yet fixed nitrogen loss remains poorly constrained because existing methods rely on indirect proxies or ex situ experiments. In this study, we show that natural abundances of the rare 15N15N isotopologue of dinitrogen (N2) provide a direct tracer of biological N2 production across diverse aquatic environments. N2 produced by denitrification and anammox has a near-stochastic 15N15N distribution [0 per mil (‰)], whereas atmospheric N2 carries a distinct 15N15N excess (19‰), allowing the two sources to be quantitatively disting
