Global Implications of COVID-19 Pandemic on Adults' Lifestyle Behavior: The Invisible Pandemic of Noncommunicable Disease.

COVID-19 pandemic, with its subsequent lockdown and mobility restriction is a public health emergency that has obliged substantial modifications in daily routines and lifestyle of people worldwide. The drastic measures of social isolation and home confinement has impacted to a great extent the physical and psychological health. The resultant abrupt in lifestyle-related behavior such as physical inactivity, unhealthy dietary habit, sleep disturbance, stress, tobacco use, and alcohol intake, is directly linked to the rising global burden of non-communicable disease. This review aims at gaining a

Facing the noncommunicable disease (NCD) global epidemic--the battle of prevention starts in utero--the FIGO challenge.

Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) are responsible for 36 million deaths every year. Of this death toll, nearly 80% (29 million) occur in low- and median-income countries. More than 9 million deaths attributed to NCDs occur in people under 60 years of age. National economies are suffering considerable losses due to premature death or disability to work resulting from heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. The knowledge that in utero and in early childhood certain processes can affect the risk of developing NCDs provides an opportunity to enforce interventions during this critical time, when they ma

A STAT1/ETC/GBP1 axis represents a potential therapeutic target for noncommunicable granulomatous skin disease.

Granuloma annulare (GA) and cutaneous sarcoidosis (cSAR) have an overlapping immunopathology, in which the aberrant activation of macrophages by IFN-γ constitutes a central driver. Nevertheless, the molecular understanding in GA and cSAR macrophages remains limited. We reanalyzed single-cell RNA sequencing data of GA and cSAR and performed in vitro experiments with primary human cells showing that oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) is a dominant metabolic pathway in IFN-γ-activated macrophages. Furthermore, we identify an IFN-γ-induced response network in GA and cSAR macrophages, sensitive to

Noncommunicable disease risk factors and cardiovascular risk among adults in Ethiopia: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) are rising in developing countries, posing substantial health, social, and economic consequences. Targeted action to address NCDs is difficult without data on the prevalence and social distribution of the risk factors. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among randomly sampled adults in Bahir Dar, Northwest Ethiopia. Sociodemographic, lifestyle risk factors, knowledge, and anthropometric measurements were collected. Chi-square and logistic regression analyses were conducted to identify predictors for NCD risk factors and cardiovascular r

Cancer and the 'other' noncommunicable chronic diseases in older people living with HIV/AIDS in resource-limited settings: a challenge to success.

OBJECTIVE: There is considerable research around the morbidity and mortality related to noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), particularly cardiovascular disease and diabetes, among people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) in resource-richer settings. Less is known about the burden and appropriate management of NCDs, particularly 'other' NCDs including cancer, renal, pulmonary, neurocognitive and mental health conditions, among older PLWHA in resource-limited settings (RLSs). We undertook a literature review of these other NCDs to explore what is currently known about them and identify areas of further

Prevalence of noncommunicable diseases and developmental conditions in 5014 Australian adolescents, and their correlations with diet, other lifestyle behaviours and mental health.

OBJECTIVE: Amongst Australian youth, there is currently a lack of understanding of the prevalence of noncommunicable diseases and developmental conditions and links with modifiable lifestyle behaviours, mental health and other socio-demographics. This paper aims to address this gap. METHODS: Australian adolescents (N = 5014, Mage=14.7, SD=0.80) completed a self-report survey assessing noncommunicable diseases/developmental conditions, sex, socio-economic status (SES), lifestyle behaviours and mental health. Multivariable logistic regressions were used to estimate the associations between thes

INTRODUCTION: The burden of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) like cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, hypertension, stroke, and cancers has been increasing in India. This rise of NCDs is mainly due to an increase in prevalence of various risk factors like tobacco use, alcohol intake, overweight, and physical inactivity. OBJECTIVE: 1) To estimate the proportion of different NCDs among study subjects, 2) to identify association of NCDs with various risk factors if any, and 3) to assess perceptions regarding risk factors and curative aspects of NCDs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A mixed method study (q

Facilitators and barriers to integration of noncommunicable diseases with HIV care at primary health care in Ethiopia: a qualitative analysis using CFIR.

BACKGROUND: The rise in non-communicable diseases (NCD), such as hypertension and diabetes among people living with human immunodeficiency virus (PLWH), has increased the demand for integrated care due to multiple chronic care needs. However, there is a dearth of evidence on contextual factors implementing integrated hypertension and diabetes care with HIV care. This study aimed to identify facilitators and barriers that could affect the integration of hypertension and diabetes with HIV care at primary health care in Ethiopia. METHODS: Five primary health facilities from five districts of the

A comprehensive nationwide registry study of noncommunicable disease comorbidities and death in cancer patients in Norway-the NCDNOR project.

Noncommunicable disease (NCD) comorbidities are common in cancer patients due to shared risk factors, but few studies have mapped their occurrence across cancer types using detailed national data. In this nationwide cohort study, we used data from Norwegian mandatory health registries to comprehensively describe NCD comorbidities at and after cancer diagnosis of 19 cancers. We included 269,956 adults registered with a first cancer in the Cancer Registry of Norway 2009-2019. Comorbidities included second cancers, cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes an

Addressing Noncommunicable Disease on Short-Term Medical Trips: A Longitudinal Study of Hypertension Treatment in Santo Domingo.

BACKGROUND: Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) are the leading cause of mortality worldwide and pose complex challenges in developing nations. Short-term medical trips, which often operate independently of government and pharmaceutical companies, are in a unique position to address NCDs in developing nations. In 2010, the Dominican Aid Society of Virginia shifted the focus of their semiannual clinic to addressing NCDs in Paraíso, Santo Domingo. OBJECTIVE: This study analyzes the longitudinal impact of a short-term medical trip on the control of hypertension in their patient population. METHODS:

Informing equitable noncommunicable disease prevention policies through lived experience: a scoping review of research approaches.

BACKGROUND: People experiencing marginalisation tend to be systematically excluded from policy decisions. Engaging people with lived experiences of marginalisation is increasingly considered critical for developing equitable and effective noncommunicable disease (NCD) policies. It remains unclear how the voices and experiences of people who are harmed by systems of marginalisation due to gender, ethnicity, sexuality, disability and social position have been included in NCD prevention policies. METHODS: We conducted a systematic scoping review, grounded in constructivist epistemology and criti

Noncommunicable disease behavioral risk factors in Sub Saharan Africa: A protocol of systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The most frequent risks of noncommunicable diseases include tobacco use, harmful use of alcohol, unhealthy diet, and physical inactivity. In low-income countries, it is not fully understood how serious these risk factors are. To address the issue at the risk factor level, it is essential to produce evidence that aids in the development of policies and initiatives in the area. This review is aimed to estimate the pooled prevalence of noncommunicable disease behavioral risk factors in Sub-Saharan Africa. METHODS: Studies published between 2016 and 2023 will be located using searches
