Feline non-ocular melanoma: a retrospective study of 23 cases (1991-1999).

Non-ocular melanoma is considered to be a rare neoplasm in cats; however, more than 150 cases have been reported in the literature since 1961. The objective of this study was to characterise this tumour better by evaluating case outcome and survival data for cats with melanoma and to compare clinical and histopathological findings with those of previous reports. Twenty-three feline non-ocular melanomas were identified, the most common locations being the nose, digit and pinna. Cats with digital melanomas had survival rates similar to their canine counterparts. Histological assignation of benig

Split Dorsal Nasal Flap: A Modification to Expand Its Utilization.

Nasal reconstruction presents the facial plastic surgeon with a complex problem given its functional and aesthetic importance. The dorsal nasal flap is a composite rotational flap of the glabella and nasal dorsum that can be used for nasal dorsum and tip defects of medium to large sizes. Given its composite nature, this flap can be split into its constituent parts-the epidermis and dermis and the subcutaneous tissue and superficial musculoaponeurotic system-without flap loss. This case series describes this technique and various potential applications within nasal reconstruction.

Assessment of the nasal microbiota in dogs with fungal rhinitis before and after cure and in dogs with chronic idiopathic rhinitis.

BACKGROUND: Pathogenesis of canine fungal rhinitis is still not fully understood. Treatment remains challenging, after cure turbinate destruction may be associated with persistent clinical signs and recurrence of fungal rhinitis can occur. Alterations of the nasal microbiota have been demonstrated in dogs with chronic idiopathic rhinitis and nasal neoplasia, although whether they play a role in the pathogenesis or are a consequence of the disease is still unknown. The objectives of the present study were (1) to describe nasal microbiota alterations associated with fungal rhinitis in dogs, comp

Forked Paramedian forehead flap combined with nasolabial flap for pre-radiation coverage of exposed maxilla in the Total Rhinectomy patient.

Total rhinectomy is ontologically necessary for large and locally invasive carcinomas of the nasal cavity owing to the complex three-dimensional structure of the nose. Reconstruction options include singular or combined options of local tissue rearrangement, free flap reconstruction, and prosthetic reconstruction which may be delayed in the setting of post-ablative radiation therapy. If significant bony exposure is present prior to radiation, there is a substantial risk of osteoradionecrosis and the ensuing sequalae. In these cases, coverage of the bony defect may be advantageous prior to radi

Myxoinflammatory fibroblastic sarcoma of the nose: First reported case at an unusual location (nasal dorsum), with a review of the literature.

Myxoinflammatory fibroblastic sarcoma (MIFS) is a rare, low-grade, malignant, soft-tissue tumor that typically affects the distal extremities of middle-aged patients. In most cases, it presents as a painless, slowly growing mass within the subcutaneous tissue. It is associated with a low rate of metastasis but a high rate of local recurrence. In addition to the distal extremities, MIFS has been reported in the thigh, arm, forearm, groin, upper back, neck, and temporal area. As far as we know, no case has been previously reported in the nasal area. We report for the first time a case of MIFS pr

Pinocchio nasal deformity secondary to lymphangioma circumscriptum.

Pinocchio or Cyrano nasal tip deformity is a rare situation that develops secondary to the soft tissue tumors underneath. In literature, there is only one case reported with Pinocchio nasal deformity secondary to cavernous lymphangioma. In this study, we present a Pinocchio or Cyrano nasal deformity with skin involvement secondary to lymphangioma circumscriptum.

Traumatic neuroma of the nose.

We report a case of a traumatic neuroma of the nose. It was an unusual site for two distinct types of tissue response to skin and soft trauma that exceeded the reparative needs of the body. In the first instance, a small cutaneous nerve was sectioned, and its inability to establish continuity distally resulted in a neuroma. In the second instance, the excision site of the neuroma was reinjured, and an abnormal connective tissue response occurred, resulting in a hypertrophic scar or keloid. Both were treated similarly with excision, and ultimately with local steroid injection with satisfactory

Nasal Lining Reconstruction with Loco-regional Flaps.

The reliability of local intranasal flaps speaks to the robust vascularity of the nose, which these flaps are based on. The goals for lining replacement, as in any other area of head and neck reconstruction, is to use tissue that best matches the qualities of what is being replaced. The goal of this review is to describe the extent to which local tissues can be used and when to consider regional flaps when the extent of a local flap will not provide enough coverage.

The pericranial flap for inner lining of full-thickness nasal defects: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Effective nasal reconstruction requires skin and soft tissue cover, cartilage or bone structure, and mucosal lining. Ideal lining is thin, pliable and vascularised, making reconstruction challenging. This paper presents the first case series with long-term outcomes of pericranial flaps used as inner lining for nasal reconstruction. METHODS: Patients undergoing paramedial forehead flaps from 2007 to 2019 were identified using second-stage nasal reconstruction billing codes. Patients with pericranial flaps for lining, for whom there were data on resulting outcomes and complications,

Hybrid reconstruction of distal nasal defects.

We present hybrid reconstruction of distal lateral "through-and-through" nasal defects (skin, cartilage, and mucosa) due to resection of tumor and/or infection. Retrospective descriptive study. The study was performed in multicenter clinics between July 2011 and September 2016. 13 patients with full thickness distal nasal defects secondary to tumor and/or infection were included. Defects included dorsal and/or caudal septum, upper lateral cartilage, or inner/outer nasal valve. Caudal-based turn-in flaps were planned and used to repair inner lining of nasal cavity. Conchal and septal cartilages

Diagnostic and treatment challenges in neurofibroma concerning the external nose.

BACKGROUND: This paper discusses clinical features and management aspects of an extremely rare entity, neurofibroma of the external nose. METHODS: Database searches were performed using PubMed, Embase and Google Scholar to identify previously published articles. RESULTS: Twelve articles comprising 13 patients with neurofibroma of the external nose were included. The mean age of presentation was 31 years. Sixty-nine per cent of patients were diagnosed at final histopathology. External approach rhinoplasty was performed in 76.9 per cent of patients, while the intranasal approach was used in 15

Update on reconstructive options for nasal Mohs defects 1.5 cm or less.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The article reviews the current literature to provide an overview on contemporary reconstructive options for closure of Mohs defects of the nose that are 1.5 cm or less. RECENT FINDINGS: Although some of the techniques described in the literature are of historical importance only, others have undergone modification and metamorphosis to be broadly used in their contemporary form. Others are implemented in their original design, irrespective of relative age or multiple attempted adaptations. The increase in variable closure options available provides the surgeon with the abil

[Potentials of reconstructive plastic surgery in the area of the nose].

Reconstruction of defects in the nasal area is described. There are basic principles to be considered, especially the cause of the defect, which may be traumatical or due to a tumour. It makes a difference whether the defect is placed on the bridge of the nose or on the lobule, or if the columella or the alar areas are affected. Another point of view is the extent of the defect, especially if it is a penetrating defect. We have also to consider the side issues, such as recurrence of the tumour, or the condition after radiotherapy. There are four principal techniques for reconstructive surgery
