The pediatric nurse practitioner's role in reducing oral health disparities in homeless children.

Dental caries is the most common infectious disease of children. The majority of children in the United States who experience dental decay are from low-income, minority families. Many low- income, minority families are at risk for homelessness and, indeed, mothers with children are the fastest growing homeless group. Once homeless, families end up in shelters. Shelters are a unique source for the provision of health care; however, the provision of dental care to mothers and children in shelters is limited. At a shelter-based clinic, of a total number of children assessed in a 24-month period (

Use of restriction enzymes to investigate the source of a primary cytomegalovirus infection in a pediatric nurse.

The risk of transmission of cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection from congenitally infected infants to nonimmune medical attendants is unknown. The case of a CMV-seronegative, pregnant nurse who seroconverted after caring for an infant with symptomatic CMV infection is reported. She elected to be aborted and the fetal tissue contained CMV. Isolates from the nurse, the fetal tissue, and the infant to whom the nurse was exposed were examined for genetic relatedness by restriction enzyme analysis. As expected, the isolates from the nurse and the fetal tissue were identical. However, the virus isolated

Discrepancies in oral mucositis pain assessment in pediatric oncology: Implications for nursing practice.

OBJECTIVE: Oral mucositis (OM) is a frequent and clinically significant complication of chemotherapy in paediatric oncology, often resulting in substantial pain and functional impairment. Despite its prevalence, discrepancies in pain assessment across informants may contribute to suboptimal symptom management. This study examined differences in OM-related pain ratings among children, parents, and nurses, and evaluated agreement between two validated pain assessment instruments. METHODS: A cross-sectional design was employed with 45 children receiving chemotherapy in a paediatric hemato-oncolo

Strategic threat management: an exploration of nursing strategies in the pediatric intensive care unit.

Part of the work of a critical care nurse is to manage the threats that arise that could impede efficient and effective job performance. Nurses manage threats by employing various strategies to keep performance high and workload manageable. We investigated strategic threat management by using the Threat-Strategy Interview. Threats frequently involved technology, staff, or organizational components. The threats were managed by a toolbox of multifaceted strategies, the most frequent of which involved staff-, treatment- (patient + technology), examination- (patient + clinician), and patient-orien

Nursing Intervention for Outpatient Rehabilitation in Pediatric Patients with Hirschsprung Disease after Colectomy.

OBJECTIVE: The present study was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of a nursing intervention program for outpatient rehabilitation of children with Hirschsprung-associated enterocolitis (HAEC) after radical colectomy for Hirschsprung disease (HD). BACKGROUND: Postoperative outcomes severely affect the quality of life in pediatric HD patients after operation. The improvement in defecation function is regarded as one of the most useful parameters to evaluate the quality of life in HD patients after radical intestinal resection. A close attention should also be paid to the patients' ability

Can a virtual patient trainer teach student nurses how to save lives--teaching nursing students about pediatric respiratory diseases.

INTRODUCTION: Virtual environments offer a variety of benefits and may be a powerful medium with which to provide nursing education. The objective of this study was to compare the achievement of learning outcomes of undergraduate nursing students when a virtual patient trainer or a traditional lecture was used to teach pediatric respiratory content. METHODS: This was a randomized, controlled, posttest design. A virtual pediatric hospital unit was populated with four virtual pediatric patients having different respiratory diseases that were designed to meet the same learning objectives as a tr

Under the Shadow of Ethical Dilemmas: A Qualitative Study of Pediatric Oncology Nurses' End-of-Life Care Experiences.

BACKGROUND: Despite advances in pediatric oncology, end-of-life (EOL) care remains ethically and emotionally challenging for nurses, often resulting in moral distress and complex decision-making. While ethics in adult oncology and palliative care are well documented, qualitative evidence in pediatric oncology nursing remains limited. OBJECTIVE: To explore pediatric oncology nurses' experiences of ethical dilemmas in EOL care. INTERVENTIONS/METHODS: A qualitative descriptive design was employed using online semistructured focus group interviews. Pediatric oncology nurses providing EOL care we

Examining the psychological symptoms of pediatric oncology nurses and barriers to seeking psychological help: A mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUNDS: Evidence suggests that Pediatric Oncology Nurses (PONs) experience stress-related psychological distress and, as a result, consider leaving the pediatric oncology setting. However, there is insufficient evidence to determine whether PONs receive psychological help during this process or, if not, what factors prevent them from seeking help. PURPOSE: In this study, the psychological symptom levels of PONs were examined, and the barriers that prevent those with high or very high symptom risk from seeking professional help were identified. METHODS: This study was conducted in X, the

Clinical Nurses' Identification of a Wearable Universal Serial Bus Used for Pediatric Oncology Clinical Trial Participant Safety Management.

The expanded access to clinical trials has provided more patients the opportunity to participate in novel therapeutics research. There is an increased likelihood of a patient, as a pediatric oncology clinical trial participant, to present for clinical care outside the research site, such as at an emergency room or urgent care center. A novel wearable universal serial bus device is a proposed technology to bridge potential communication gaps, pertaining to critical information such as side effects and permitted therapies, between research teams and clinical teams where investigational agents ma

The analgesic response is moderated by nurses' confidence in their pain assessment: Results from pediatric acute pain study.

BACKGROUND: Managing acute pain in children remains challenging, and clinical decisions often depend on nurses' interpretation of both reported and behavioral pain cues. Nurse confidence in their assessments may influence treatment decisions and outcomes, yet evidence from real-world clinical settings is limited. PURPOSE: This study examined whether nurses' confidence in assessing children's pain moderates the relationship between analgesic type (opioid versus non-opioid) and pain reduction in pediatric patients. METHODS: A dyadic observational study was conducted in two hospitals with 120 c

Distribution of a photographic atlas did not reduce postoperative care utilization after pediatric circumcision or the indispensability of the pediatric urology clinic nurse.

BACKGROUND: Surgery in children is increasingly ambulatory, and caregiver responsibilities for postoperative care can produce anxiety. Prior studies have suggested the distribution of a photographic atlas can mitigate caregiver anxiety and reduce clinic phone calls and in-person presentations after pediatric penile surgery. OBJECTIVE: A pilot study of the ability of a photographic atlas, distributed to caregivers, was aimed to be conducted to reduce postoperative resource utilization.
