The aim of this study is to estimate parents' satisfaction following a surgical procedure on their child. This includes support as well as additional information and documentation for the individual parent (cognitive and emotional), conjugal, parental and other family members. The majority of parents are satisfied with the treatment program, realizing that the treatment enables them to adapt to their new situation, that is, as parents of a newborn child suffering from health problems. This support allows them to recognize and talk about their own fears and emotions as well as those of their pa

Older breast cancer survivors are at risk for a decline in functional status, which is associated with increased risk for disability, increased health care costs and increased risk of nursing home placement. The comprehensive geriatric assessment is a useful tool for identifying women with a history of breast cancer who are at increased risk for decline in functional status. Use of the comprehensive geriatric assessment will allow nurses to identify functional care needs and develop care plans and interventions that are aimed at maintenance of functional status.

This article reports the qualitative findings of a multimethod study of the homeless population in Toronto, Canada. The qualitative component sought to identify how people become homeless and why some individuals remain homeless for an extended period of time or cycle in and out of homelessness (the chronically homeless). In-depth, semistructured interviews were conducted with 29 homeless adults. The findings suggest that people both become and remain homeless due to a combination of macro level factors (poverty, lack of employment, low welfare wages, lack of affordable housing) and personal v

Women in prison have often suffered physical and sexual abuse as children which substantively contributes to their substance abuse, violence, and criminal behaviors. To understand women's offending, and subsequent health issues, it is helpful to understand their own victimization. In this participative action research, women used poetry as both a process and a product to confront the truths of their lives in terms of what was done to them and what they have done to others and themselves. As the women learned to speak their own truths, those same truths became unavoidable to themselves. This ri

A descriptive study was undertaken to determine whether parents were able to participate in the care of their hospitalized child and work in partnership with the nurses. The study utilized method triangulation and was conducted in two phases. In phase one a postal survey of 65 nurses was undertaken in three children's wards within an NHS trust hospital, while in the second phase, 12 in-depth interviews were completed with parents in their own homes following their child's discharge from hospital. The quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistics and the qualitative data were sub

During birth women instinctively push in the most effective and safe way for themselves and their babies. However, midwives continue to direct women's pushing behaviours. The assumptions underpinning this practice must be examined and challenged. Midwives need to develop an evidence-based approach that acknowledges and reinforces women's innate ability to birth.

AIM: To investigate bowel preparation for a flexible sigmoidoscopy, particularly the procedure for the administration of a phosphate enema and patient expectation to 'wait as long as they can' before the urge to rush to the toilet.
METHOD: A survey approach was used with a questionnaire recording the time to toilet after the enema and level of bowel clearance.
RESULTS: Over half of participants (24 of 40) chose to use the toilet immediately. Bowel clearance was reported as good in 32 of the 40 participants and side-effects were reduced.
CONCLUSION: Giving patients choice when to visit the t

Spina bifida is a common congenital abnormality, which causes significant physical and psychological morbidity in affected children and which also affects their carers. This small-scale study looked at the health problems of a child with a myelomeningocoele. It also addresses the psychosocial problems that his mother, his main carer, faced and the social networks involved in his care. The evidence supporting various aspects of spina bifida prevention and management is explored. Furthermore, a literature review is included, with regards to physical and psychological issues for child and carer.

The need for conventional mechanical ventilation (CMV) is a common one in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The goals of CMV are to facilitate adequate gas exchange, minimize the risk of lung injury/damage, decrease the patient's work of breathing, and optimize the patient's comfort. Although time-cycled, pressure-limited ventilation remains the most common CMV modality, volume-cycled ventilation, assist-control ventilation, pressure-support ventilation, and pressure-control ventilation are sometimes used in the NICU. Pressure-regulated volume control, volume-guaranteed ventilation, vol

This study was an enquiry into how clinical supervision could enable a team of six community psychiatric nurses to provide improved patient-centred care. It also examined how feelings of burn-out, stress and tedium when caring for people with dementia could be relieved. The methodology used in the study analysed the process, enabling the findings to be studied. This is new paradigm research, requiring the researcher and participants to be equal and active coenquirers into the process facilitating the enquiry. Six community psychiatric nurses allowed their period of supervision to be recorded o
