Lessons learned through transitioning into a clinical research nurse role: a reflective practice account.

BACKGROUND: Clinical research nurses (CRNs) play a key role in delivering safe and ethical research within healthcare systems. However, the role remains variably understood, and nurses transitioning from ward-based practice may encounter role ambiguity, inconsistent induction and challenges to professional identity. AIM: To critically reflect on the transition from ward-based nursing into clinical research nursing and to identify implications for workforce support and professional development. DISCUSSION: A reflective practice approach was used, drawing on professional experience across resp

Expert Clinical Panel Member for a Research Study: A Role for the Advanced Practice Registered Nurse.

The role of advanced practice nurses (APRNs) continues to evolve, meeting the complex needs of today's healthcare systems while shaping the future of the nursing. APRNs provide holistic, patient-centered care that improves access to quality services. Beyond clinical practice, they serve as educators, mentors, and collaborators on interprofessional teams to enhance outcomes. This manuscript highlights a less-recognized role for APRNs: involvement on clinical expert panels of research studies. It describes the multifaceted contributions of APRNs on an interdisciplinary clinical expert panel of N

The phenomenon of bedriddenness in older adults in hospitals: A scoping review of current research and nursing implications.

Due to demographic changes, the increasing number of bedridden individuals presents challenges for hospitals in developing care concepts. This scoping review examines research on bedriddenness among older adults in hospitals, focusing on the process and prevention of bedriddenness, its consequences, the organisation of life in bed, and implications for nursing. A systematic search across four databases (MEDLINE, CINAHL, LIVIO, Scopus) for studies published 2003-2023 includes 55 articles. Most studies address the adverse effects of bedriddenness and their treatment, while fewer studies focus on

Why nurses in primary care need to be research active: the case of venous leg ulceration.

Venous leg ulceration (VLU) is predominantly managed in primary care by district nurses, however much of the research takes place in secondary care. This study aimed to identify to what extent nurses are involved in publishing VLU research and to ascertain how much VLU research is conducted in primary care. Three searches of literature published between 2015 and 2020 were undertaken, reviewing VLU publications on interventions, quality of life and qualitative research. Some 37% of intervention studies had one or more nurse authors, compared with 65% of quality of life studies and 86% of qualit

Building process improvement capacity in epidemiologic research operations: The Nurses' Health Study experience.

With declining infrastructure funding for large-scale epidemiologic cohort studies, continuous process improvement is essential to sustain research quality and impact. The authors recently undertook a Lean Six Sigma (LSS) training initiative with operational staff of the Nurses' Health Studies, among the longest-running and most productive cohort studies, to modernize operations and build internal capacity for process improvement. Twenty staff members across operational domains completed a structured LSS curriculum and three improvement projects: (1) reducing median turnaround time for medical

Optimizing Agreement Between Bedside Nurse-Documented and Trained Researcher Delirium Assessments in the ICU.

OBJECTIVES: Delirium is common and harmful in the ICU. The Intensive Care Delirium Screening Checklist (ICDSC) and Confusion Assessment Method for the ICU (CAM-ICU) are validated tools recommended for delirium identification. However, the accuracy of bedside nurse-documented delirium assessments in the ICU is inconsistent, limiting utility in clinical research. We sought to evaluate and optimize agreement between bedside nurse-documented and trained researcher delirium assessments. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PATIENTS: Critically ill adults with acute respiratory failure or sepsis in ICUs in large a

Certification of staff nurses to insert enteral feeding tubes using a research-based procedure.

Nutrition Support Nurse Clinicians at a Central Texas tertiary care facility have developed a research-based nasoenteric feeding tube insertion procedure that minimizes the potential for inadvertent passage of a feeding tube containing a stylet into the respiratory tract and maximizes placement of the feeding tube in the desired gastric or duodenal location. The first 79 staff nurses to be certified to use the technique had a 90% duodenal placement success rate under supervision. No bedside feeding tube insertion complications have been noted since the initiation of the certification program 6

Application and translational research of magnesium in nursing care of orthopedic diseases: from mechanism to clinical translation.

Magnesium is an essential bioactive ion that plays a central role in skeletal physiology. However, its contributions to bone biology and orthopedic practice are only beginning. Beyond its structural incorporation into bone mineral, magnesium dynamically regulates osteoblast and osteoclast function through signaling networks, including PI3K/Akt, TRPM, and the OPG/RANKL/RANK axis. Disruption of magnesium homeostasis has been increasingly implicated in osteoporosis, delayed fracture healing, and other skeletal pathologies. Concurrently, the emergence of biodegradable magnesium-based biomaterials
