INTRODUCTION: Colorectal cancer is the third cause of death in industrialized countries. Genetic susceptibility and diet are determinant of cancer risk and tumor behavior. Variation in cancer incidence among and within populations with similar dietary patterns suggests that an individual response may reflect interactions with genetic factors, which may modify gene, protein, and metabolite expression patterns. Nutrigenomics, defined as the interaction between nutrition and an individual genome, will likely provide important clues about responders and non-responders to nutritional intervention.

Chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and metabolic syndrome, account for more than 70% of global mortality and impose a disproportionate burden on low- and middle-income countries. Traditional, population-level dietary guidelines often fail to address population-level dietary guidelines often fail to account for the considerable inter-individual variability in metabolic responses to food. Personalized nutrition (PN), informed by genomics, metabolomics, gut microbiome composition, and behavioral factors, has emerged as an effectiv

Background/Objectives: Increased interest in personalized nutrition has led to a growing focus on exploring genetic variants and their impact on nutritional uptake (nutrigenomics). Nevertheless, no systematic review to date has compiled scientific evidence on genetic variants (such as single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs)) affecting mineral metabolism in humans. This review aims to fill this gap and enable optimized personalized nutrition recommendations in health care. Methods: Cochrane, Embase and MEDLINE databases were systematically searched for English and German studies published betwee

There is considerable interest in the trace element selenium as a possible cancer chemopreventive dietary component, but supplementation trials have not indicated a clear benefit. Selenium is a critical component of selenium-containing proteins, or selenoproteins. Members of this protein family contain selenium in the form of selenocysteine. Selenocysteine is encoded by an in-frame UGA codon recognized as a selenocysteine codon by a regulatory element, the selenocysteine insertion sequence (SECIS), in the 3'-untranslated region of selenoprotein mRNAs. Epidemiological studies have implicated se

The search for a connection between diet and human cancer has a long history in cancer research, as has interest in the mechanisms by which dietary factors might increase or decrease cancer risk. The realization that altering diet can alter the epigenetic state of genes and that these epigenetic alterations might increase or decrease cancer risk is a more modern notion, driven largely by studies in animal models. The connections between diet and epigenetic alterations, on the one hand, and between epigenetic alterations and cancer, on the other, are supported by both observational studies in h

Bladder cancer (BC) is a biologically heterogeneous tumor affected by genetic, metabolic, environmental, and lifestyle factors. Recent research indicates that nutrition can change the way urothelial cancer forms by affecting inflammation, oxidative stress, cellular energy, and the epigenome. It can also change the risk of BC and how well treatment works. Simultaneous progress in precision nutrition (PN) and nutriomic profiling-encompassing nutrigenomics, nutrigenetics, nutriepigenetics, metabolomics, and microbiome science-presents novel options to tailor dietary regimens beyond universal guid

Introduction: Advances in nutrigenomics have enabled exploration of how genetic variation may relate to nutrition and lifestyle traits. However, the extent to which demographic factors influence the distribution of such variants remains underexplored. Objective: This study examined gender- and region-specific variation in diet- and lifestyle-related genetic traits and described patterns of trait clustering within a cohort of direct-to-consumer gene-test clients. Methods: A cross-sectional analysis was conducted on 503 anonymised gene-test reports covering 41 nutrition- and lifestyle-linked gen

BACKGROUND: The relationship between lifestyle and obesity is a major focus of research. Personalized nutrition, which utilizes evidence from nutrigenomics, such as gene-environment interactions, has been attracting attention in recent years. However, evidence for gene-environment interactions that can inform treatment strategies is lacking, despite some reported interactions involving dietary intake or physical activity. Utilizing gene-lifestyle interactions in practice could aid in optimizing interventions according to genetic risk.
METHODS: This study aimed to elucidate the effects of gene

BACKGROUND: Haptoglobin (which is encoded by the Hp gene) is a hemoglobin-binding protein that has antioxidant properties and a common polymorphism that consists of 2 structurally different alleles: Hp1 and Hp2. The capacity of Hp2 to inhibit oxidation and vitamin C depletion is less than that of Hp1, but the influence on vitamin C requirements remains unknown.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine whether the Hp polymorphism modifies the association between dietary vitamin C and serum ascorbic acid deficiency (<11 μmol/L).
DESIGN: Nonsmoking men and women (n = 1046) between 20 and 29 y o

One of the limitations for ranking foods and meals for healthiness on the basis of the glycaemic index (GI) is that the GI is subject to manipulation by addition of fat. Postprandial lipemia, defined as a rise in circulating triglyceride containing lipoproteins following consumption of a meal, has been recognised as a risk factor for the development of cardiovascular disease and other chronic diseases. Many non-modifiable factors (pathological conditions, genetic background, age, sex and menopausal status) and life-style factors (physical activity, smoking, alcohol and medication use, dietary

Neural tube defects (NTDs), affecting 1-2 per 1000 pregnancies, are severe congenital malformations that arise from the failure of neurulation during early embryonic development. The methylation hypothesis suggests that folate prevents NTDs by stimulating cellular methylation reactions. Folate is central to the one-carbon metabolism that produces pyrimidines and purines for DNA synthesis and for the generation of the methyldonor S-adenosyl-methionine. This review focuses on the relation between the folate-mediated one-carbon metabolism, DNA methylation and NTDs. Studies will be discussed that

Potatoes are among the most widely consumed staple foods worldwide, but their cultivation and storage frequently involve multiple phytopharmaceutical products (PPPs), raising concerns about the health risks of dietary pesticide residues. The health effects of multi-residue PPPs used in potato cultivation were assessed in an in vivo murine model, involving 36 mice, and evaluated through omics analyses. Two field cultivation methods (conventional and organic) and two post-harvest storage conditions (using 1,4-dimethylnaphthalene and mint essential oil as sprout inhibitor treatments) were conside

Fish is considered an important part of a healthy diet, in part due to the content of long chain omega-3 fatty acids. However, both lean and fatty fish have beneficial health effects, suggesting that micronutrients and proteins may play a role. In a randomised, controlled, cross-over trial, five healthy male participants consumed 5.2 g of protein from either salmon fishmeal or whey. Blood samples were taken before and 30 and 60 min after intake. The concentration of glucose, lipids, hormones and metabolites, including 28 different amino acids and derivatives, were measured in serum or plasma.
