In the recent years matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry (MS) has become a useful tool to characterize arthropod species and their different stages of development. It was reported for sand flies and mosquitoes at immature stages and also assumed for ticks that geographic location can have a subtle influence on MALDI-TOF mass spectra which allows the discrimination of animals with specific local variations of the MALDI-TOF MS phenotype. It is so far uncertain, however, if these mass-spectrometric differences are based on genetic variation or o

Three Palearctic members of the subgenus Pholeoixodes, i.e., Ixodes canisuga, Ixodes hexagonus and Ixodes kaiseri are frequently collected from dogs, cats, red foxes, badgers and other carnivorous/insectivorous hosts in Europe. While a pictorial identification key has been reported for female Pholeoixodes ticks, a similar work has not been done on their male, nymphal and larval specimens. This study was initiated in order to clarify and re-examine those morphological characters of these three tick species, which can be used relatively easily to identify/distinguish them. In the case of larvae

Borrelia miyamotoi Fukunaga (Spirochaetales: Spirochaetaceae), the etiological agent of hard tick relapsing fever, has been detected at low prevalence in Ixodes spp. (Acari: Ixodidae) ticks from the Northern Hemisphere. Genetically distinct populations of B. miyamotoi have been described across continents and among Ixodes tick species distributed within continents. Within the eastern United States, a previous study identified two B. miyamotoi genotypes infecting Ixodes scapularis Say (Acari: Ixodidae). Here, we expand upon that work by developing a new multiplex PCR amplicon sequencing assay t

We examined host usage and seasonal activity patterns of the nymphal stage of the ticks Ixodes kingi and I. sculptus within a prairie rodent community in north-central Colorado. Ixodes kingi was commonly encountered on both northern grasshopper mice (Onychomys leucogaster) and thirteen-lined ground squirrels (Spermophilus tridecemlineatus), whereas I. sculptus frequently infested S. tridecemlineatus but was absent from O. leucogaster. Low numbers of ticks of both species were collected from deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) and Ord's kangaroo rats (Dipodomys ordii). Nymphal loads of I. kingi

Since its detection in Canada in the early 1990s, Ixodes scapularis, the primary tick vector of Lyme disease in eastern North America, has continued to expand northward. Estimates of the tick's broad-scale distribution are useful for tracking the extent of the Lyme disease risk zone; however, tick distribution may vary widely within this zone. Here, we investigated I. scapularis nymph distribution at three spatial scales across the Lyme disease emergence zone in southern Quebec, Canada. We collected ticks and compared the nymph densities among different woodlands and different plots and transe

The nymph and reared male and female of a new ephemerellid species, which was collected from southern China and named Teloganopsis setosa Zhou, sp. n., are described. The nymph is unique because of its long and dense setae on labrum, mandibles, maxillae, labium, and forelegs as well as the elongated segments II of labial palpi and expanded paraglossae. The male can be differentiated from close relatives by its larger penis lobes with dorsolateral projections, and the more pigmented tergum IV and caudal filaments. The nymph described in this paper represents a new adaptive and ecological type i

The Australian plague locust, Chortoicetes terminifera (Walker), is an important agricultural pest that oviposits into soil across vast semi-arid and arid regions. This study aimed to determine whether gravid female locusts can discriminate among substrates of increasing salinity (0, 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, and 28ppt NaCl) when attempting oviposition, and quantify the effects of saline substrate on direct developing egg viability, and subsequent hatchling nymph body weight and survival. Gravid female locusts increasingly excavated and withdrew prior to completing oviposition in substrates of inc

Linguatula serrata is a cosmopolitan zoonotic parasite in which carnivores and herbivores serve as final and intermediate hosts, respectively. The aim of this study was to compare the L. serrata nymphal infection rate and intensity of infection (mean number of nymphs ± standard error) to the appearance and pathological changes of mesenteric lymph nodes (MLNs) infected with L. serrata using sheep slaughtered in Tabriz, Iran. In addition, the effect of age, sex, and season on the prevalence of L. serrata infection was evaluated. For this purpose, over a four-year period, 31,078 MLNs from 3199 sh

The behaviour of Dermanyssus gallinae was investigated on two layer farms where two different light programs were introduced in the 40th week of hen life. In layer house No. 1, light was applied continuously for 16 hours during the day, while layer house No. 2 was subjected to 4 hours of light and 2 hours of darkness applied alternately during the day. To monitor the level of red mite infestation, 30 tube traps were placed in every layer house corridor at a height of 1.5 m above the floor. In the first layer house, 280 Dermanyssus gallinae females, 50 nymph larvae and 198 eggs were found in 10

INTRODUCTION: In the far western United States of America, Ixodes pacificus is the primary vector of several pathogens of public health and veterinary importance including the Lyme disease spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (s.l.), as well as Borrelia miyamotoi and Anaplasma phagocytophilum. Ixodes pacificus is common in southern Oregon yet there are few published studies on the distribution of tick-borne pathogens in this region.
METHODS: Using real-time quantitative PCR, we assessed the prevalence of B. burgdorferi s.l., B. miyamotoi, and A. phagocytophilum among 2,463 unfed I. paci

In order to determine the principal vectors of Lyme disease in South China, the capability of Ixodes sinensis to transmit Lyme disease spirochetes transstadially was estimated in the laboratory. Results suggest that I. sinensis can acquire active Lyme disease spirochetes by feeding on infected mice of Kunming strains (KM), and the positive rates of larvae and nymph I. sinensis infected were 94.0% and 92.0%, respectively. I. sinensis maintained active spirochetes during blood digestion and molting periods; the subsequent questing tick stages were also found to be infected and infectious to naiv

The tick Ixodes ricinus is the main vector of the spirochaete Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, the causal agent of Lyme borreliosis, in the western Palearctic. Rodents are the reservoir host of B. afzelii, which can be transmitted to I. ricinus larvae during a blood meal. The infected engorged larvae moult into infected nymphs, which can transmit the spirochaetes to rodents and humans. Interestingly, even though only about 1% of the larvae develop into a borreliae-infected nymph, the enzootic borreliae lifecycle can persist. The development from larva to infected nymph is a key aspect in this

Following engorgement of Rhipicephalus appendiculatus larvae on guinea-pigs infected with tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus, none of the engorged larvae or emergent nymphs contained detectable infectious virus. However, one of twelve pools, each containing three of the unfed nymphs, was positive when screened by polymerase chain reaction (PCR), indicating a low prevalence of TBE virus infection in the unfed nymphs. After engorgement of the nymphs on four uninfected guinea-pigs, 19/24 (79%) fed nymphs from one guinea-pig and 4/25 (16%) fed nymphs from a second guinea-pig were infected; all th

Understanding the effects of local habitat and wider landscape connectivity factors on tick presence, nymph density and Borrelia species (spp.) prevalence in the tick population is important for identifying the public health risk from Lyme borreliosis. This multi-city study collected data in three southern England cities (Bath, Bristol, and Southampton) during spring, summer, and autumn in 2017. Focusing specifically on urban green space used for recreation which were clearly in urbanised areas, 72 locations were sampled. Additionally, geospatial datasets on urban green space coverage within 2

Ixodes scapularis is currently known to transmit 7 pathogens responsible for Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, babesiosis, tick-borne relapsing fever, ehrlichiosis, and Powassan encephalitis. Ixodes scapularis can also be colonized by endosymbiotic bacteria including those in the genus of Rickettsia. We screened 459 I. scapularis ticks submitted to the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station Tick Testing Laboratory with the objectives to (1) examine differences in infection prevalence of Borrelia burgdorferi, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Babesia microti, and Borrelia miyamotoi, (2) evaluate whethe

The Osiris gene family is believed to play important roles in insect biology. Previous studies mainly focused on the roles of Osiris in Drorophila, how Osiris operates during the development of other species remains largely unknown. Here, we investigated the role of LmOsi17 in development of the hemimetabolous insect Locusta migratoria. LmOsi17 was highly expressed in the intestinal tract of nymphs. Knockdown of LmOsi17 by RNA interference (RNAi) in nymphs resulted in growth defects. The dsLmOsi17-injected nymphs did not increase in body weight or size and eventually died. Immunohistochemical

Nymphs of Ixodes ricinus (Linnaeus, 1758), I. scapularis Say, 1821, and I. pacificus Cooley & Kohls, 1943 are epidemiologically the most dangerous stage for transmission of Lyme disease to humans. Many factors play a role in the epidemiological significance of the nymphs. In this study, we address the question of whether nymphs show a greater tendency than adults to accept humans as their host. To evaluate this, we have compared the host acceptance behavior of nymphs and adults (males and females) with respect to a human in Rambouillet forest, a focus of Lyme disease. Individual ticks (nymph,

Resistance was induced in cattle to the tick Amblyomma variegatum by five consecutive infestations with nymphs and adults. Using the principal component analysis (PCA), it was found that percentage of adults engorged, percentage of adults which died, percentage of nymphs which engorged, percentage of nymphs which moulted and percentage of nymphs which died, were the main indicators of resistance against A. variegatum. The percentages of nymphs which engorged or moulted after the third infestation were significantly (P < 0.01) reduced while the percentage of nymphs which died increased signific

We examined material from two poorly documented areas in Brazil concerning the mayfly genus Thraulodes: Minas Gerais, the largest state in Southeastern Brazil, but also the least studied regarding mayflies; and Tocantins, located in the North-Central area of the country. As a consequence of these efforts, we describe a new species from Minas Gerais based on imagos and nymphs, as well as the nymphs of Thraulodes solstitium Orlando, Salles, Boldrini & Krolow, 2021. Thraulodes viola sp. nov. is characterized by the femora translucid with brown maculae and blackish stripe in distal half, and a lig
