Personality disorder in obsessive compulsive disorder: a controlled study.

In order to assess Axis II pathology in Obsessive Compulsive Disorder patients as compared to other anxiety disorder patients, the Personality Disorder Examination was administered to 258 anxiety disorder patients. In contrast to a number of recent reports, a low rate of personality disorder diagnoses were found in the OCD sample as well as the anxiety disorder control subjects. The findings of the current investigation are discussed in terms of state-trait confounding.

[Body dysmorphic disorder as an obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorder].

Considerable evidence supports consideration of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder as related disorders. BDD may share common phenomenological and neurobiological features with OGD and other disorders characterized by repetitive thoughts and behaviors and mediated by serotonin dysfunction. Within this substrate, specific psychological and sociological factors may shape the specific BDD syndrome. Further research incorporating dimensional models of these disorders, may delineate specific similarities and differences.

Clinical comparison of Tourette's disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

The authors report on 16 outpatients with Tourette's disorder, 16 outpatients with obsessive-compulsive disorder, and 16 normal control subjects who underwent structured interviews and psychological testing. Previous findings of a high incidence of obsessive-compulsive disorder in patients with Tourette's disorder were confirmed. There was a significantly greater incidence of tics in the patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder and their relatives. Both patient groups had high rates of unipolar depressive and generalized anxiety disorders. Panic and phobic disorders were frequent in the pat

Evaluating Serum Proteome in Women with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder/Bipolar Disorder Compared to Pure Obsessive- Compulsive Disorder Subjects and Healthy Controls.

OBJECTIVES: The present study aimed to evaluate the serum proteome of women with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)/bipolar disorder (BP) compared to pure OCD subjects and healthy controls. MATERIALS & METHODS: Serum proteome of women with OCD/BP, pure OCD individuals, and healthy controls were subjected to 2DE-based proteomics accompanied with MALDI-TOF-TOF mass spectrometry. Further evaluation of the identified protein spots with the significance of p<0.05 and fold≥1.5 was done by applying protein interaction mapping via Cytoscape v. 5.3.1 and its plugins. RESULTS: The results indicate th

Genetics and Epigenetics of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

Background: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a heterogeneous psychiatric condition with substantial heritability. Early genetic studies were often underpowered and produced limited reproducibility, but recent large-scale genomic and multi-omic approaches are beginning to elucidate the genetic architecture of OCD. Objectives: This review aims to synthesise current evidence from recent genomic and epigenomic studies on OCD and their implications for molecular pathways of pathogenesis, including endophenotypes. Methods: We reviewed peer-reviewed literature and preprints published in recent

[Psychodynamic Intervention in Severe Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder].

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is among the most common psychiatric conditions and is associated with substantial distress and functional impairment. Although Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and pharmacotherapy are considered first-line treatments, not all patients respond sufficiently. The case of a young woman demonstrates that a psychodynamic short-term therapy over five weeks can lead to marked symptom reduction (Y-BOCS: 39.5 → 19). This improvement is attributed to addressing intrapsychic conflicts and structural deficits.

Immune (dys)function in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: It has been suggested that peripheral inflammation and immune-mediated neuronal dysfunction play a decisive role in the pathophysiology of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). However, work addressing this hypothesis is mostly based on small samples and heterogeneous methodologies, and has led to inconsistent results. Here we conducted the largest study to date comparing an extensive panel of immune markers in the peripheral blood between adult patients with OCD and healthy controls. METHODS: One-hundred and thirty-nine patients with OCD and 131 age and sex-matched controls were a

A neuroeconomic theory of obsessive-compulsive disorder.

While there are many studies on the neural bases of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), there is a dire need for a neurocomputational framework to explain its symptoms. To this end, we use the Expected Value of Control (EVC) theory to conceptualize the information processing deficits underlying OCD. Specifically, we argue that when experiencing obsessions, weak cognitive control is favored due to the affective cost of disregarding anxiety-provoking obsessions (akin to ignoring a fire alarm). This affective cost leads to the overvaluation of the cost of cognitive control (deeming it expensive)

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder in Children and Adolescents.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in children and adolescents is a neurobehavioral condition that can lead to functional impairment in multiple domains and decreased quality of life. We review the clinical presentation, diagnostic considerations, and common comorbidities of pediatric OCD. An overview of the biological and psychological models of OCD is provided along with a discussion of developmental considerations in youth. We also describe evidence-based treatments for OCD in childhood and adolescence, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) with exposure and response prevention (ERP

Perinatal Timing of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Onset.

Objectives: The purpose of this research was to assess the timing and characteristics of the onset of perinatally occurring obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). OCD is a potentially disabling anxiety-related mental health condition for which the perinatal period represents a time of increased risk for onset, recurrence, and exacerbation. Methods: This was a prospective cohort study conducted in British Columbia, Canada. Recruitment took place from January 23, 2014, to September 9, 2016. Participants provided information on reproductive and demographic questionnaires and diagnostic interviews (

Psilocybin in pharmacotherapy of obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a chronic mental disease that affects approximately 2% of the population. Obsessions and compulsions are troublesome for patients and may disturb their everyday activities. The pathogenesis of this disease is still not fully elucidated, but dysfunctions of serotonin-, dopamine- and glutamate-mediated neurotransmission together with early maladaptive schemas seem of importance. Pharmacological treatment includes drugs affecting the serotoninergic, dopaminergic, and glutamatergic systems, such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Providing th

The Pharmacological Treatment of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

Pharmacological treatment is a mainstay of the care of individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder. Robust evidence supports the use of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and the older tricyclic drug clomipramine. Other antidepressants are less effective (or have been insufficiently studied). When first-line treatment with these agents, and with appropriate psychotherapy, is ineffective, several augmentation strategies are available, though their evidentiary support is weaker. A substantial minority of patients have persistent symptoms despite optimal evidence-based treatment. Furt

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) patients need novel therapeutic interventions since most experience residual symptoms despite treatment. Converging evidence suggest that OCD involves dysfunction of limbic cortico-striato-thalamo-cortical loops, including the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC), that tends to normalize with successful treatment. Recently, three repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) coils were FDA-cleared for treatment-refractory OCD. This review presents on-label and off-label clinical evidence and relevant physical char

Inflammation, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, and Related Disorders.

Initial reports supporting the possibility of inflammation in the brain in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) evolved from the models of Sydenham's Chorea, and Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorder Associated with Streptococcus (PANDAS), which implicated excessive autoimmune responses following exposure to group A B-hemolytic streptococcal infections. Subsequently, this model was expanded to Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS) which applied the same concept but included other infections. A critical shortcoming of this model was that it was attributable to a small mi
