Talon cusp: report of a case.

Talon cusp is a developmental dental anomaly, normally located on the palatal surface of the anterior teeth, that can occur in both primary and permanent dentition. The aim of this article is to relate a clinical case of talon cusp that interfered with both the occlusion and appearance of the patient. During anamnesis, the patient told of difficulty masticating. Clinical examination revealed labial inclination of the maxillary central incisors, featuring an overjet of about 5 mm, with interposition of the lower lip and an Angle Class I occlusal relationship. A treatment plan was devised in whi

Evaluation of the Use of a Force Diagram in the Management of Temporomandibular Joint Sounds: A Prospective Cross-sectional Study.

CONTEXT: Occlusal splints are widely used in clinical practice as a noninvasive treatment for patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) and for reduction of TMD-related symptoms. A force diagram allows a health care professional to evaluate the interactions of loads caused by muscular effort, which are sensed by the teeth and the temporomandibular joint during the protrusive movement of the mandible. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of occlusal splints combined with occlusal adjustment (OA) based on a force diagram in the management of joint sounds (clicking and crepitation). METHO

Retention and caries-preventive outcomes of glass ionomer-based fissure sealants in children: a 24-month split-mouth randomized controlled trial.

This study aimed to comparatively evaluate the 24-month clinical retention performance and caries-preventive efficacy of three glass ionomer–based fissure sealants with different compositions. This randomized, controlled, double-blind clinical trial was conducted with ethical approval and registered at ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT07388472). A total of 400 sealants were applied to the two fully erupted mandibular first molars of each participant. Following randomization, one molar received GC Fuji Triage (high-fluoride containing/control) (GC Int., Tokyo, Japan), while the contralateral molar receiv

Intraoperative Challenges of Patient-Specific Osteotomy Guides in Anterior Maxillary Osteotomy: A Case Report.

Orthognathic surgery has increasingly incorporated digital workflows and patient-specific surgical guides to enhance accuracy and predictability. While these technologies offer improved planning and execution, their intraoperative application in segmented maxillary osteotomies remains technically demanding. Limited literature exists describing the practical challenges encountered during guide-assisted osteotomy, particularly in anatomically constrained regions. This case report describes the use of a patient-specific cutting guide in a 24-year-old male patient undergoing anterior two-piece max

Comparison of surgical and non-surgical orthodontic treatment approaches on occlusal and cephalometric outcomes in patients with Class II Division I malocclusions.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to examine end-of-treatment outcomes of severe Class II Division I malocclusion patients treated with surgical or non-surgical approaches. This study tests the hypotheses that occlusal outcomes (ABO-OGS) and cephalometric outcomes differ between these groups. METHODS: A total of 60 patients were included: 20 of which underwent surgical correction and 40 of which did not. Cast grading of initial and final study models was performed and information was gathered from pre- to post-treatment cephalometric radiographs. The end-of-treatment ABO-OGS and cephalometric outc

Occlusive Disease and Upright Activity in Acute Ischemic Stroke.

The impact of out-of-bed upright activity on outcomes in ischemic stroke patients with severe extra- and intracranial stenosis or occlusion is unknown. Using ultrasound findings from a cohort recruited to A Very Early Rehabilitation Trial (AVERT) which compared higher dose very early mobilisation (VEM) to usual care (UC), we aimed to explore the association between occlusive disease and 3-month outcomes and occlusive disease-by-mobilisation treatment interactions. Participants with ischemic stroke, with carotid and transcranial Doppler ultrasounds performed ≤1 week after admission, were includ

[Present situation and future of occlusal splint in treatment of oral diseases].

Occlusal splint is a removable device for the treatment of oral and maxillary diseases with reversible occlusal treatment property. When patients wear the occlusal splint, the occlusal contact state can be changed and the position of the lower jaw may be adjusted, with the improvement of functions of temporomandibular joints and masticatory muscles. There are various types of occlusal splints, among which stabilization splint, soft occlusal splint and repositioning splint are widely used in the treatment of temporomandibular disorders and night bruxism. For the patients requiring occlusal reco

The treatment of masseter hypertrophy with botulinum toxin type A.

Masseter hypertrophy is a benign condition with variable causative factors, such as bruxism, temporomandibular disorders, malocclusion and others, but has an unclear etiology in the majority of cases. Surgical masseteric resection was the conventional method of treatment for the asymmetric swellings over the ramus and angle of the mandible on one or both sides, in addition to the generally unsuccessful treatments of occlusal adjustment, splint therapy, tranquilizers or others. An effective alternative was the local injection of very small doses of botulinum toxin type A into the masseter. The

Clinical guidelines for posterior semidirect composite resin restorations: a case report with a 17-month follow-up.

Patients are always looking for conservative, esthetic, and long-lasting dental restorations, and the technique used directly influences the longevity of the treatment. The location of the restoration in the mouth and the extent of the decay influence the treatment choice. The larger the dimensions of the cavity preparation, the greater the difficulties in restoring the tooth using direct techniques. The semidirect technique, when indicated, can achieve satisfactory results. It is a relatively easy procedure, consisting of tooth preparation to receive an indirect restoration, fabrication of an

Digital diagnostic occlusal equilibration combining an intraoral scanner, optical jaw tracking system, and dental design program: A dental technique.

Patients with aberrant occlusal patterns, including constricted mastication patterns or occlusal dysfunction, may require occlusal equilibration. Conventional diagnostic procedures involve diagnostic stone casts mounted in the articulator. During diagnostic procedures, occlusal equilibration methods are simulated on mounted stone casts to analyze the amount of dental structure that may need to be removed. A technique to virtually simulate an occlusal equilibration procedure is described. Digital data acquisition procedures include diagnostic casts acquired using an intraoral scanner and the re
