Recording the maxillomandibular relationship with the Aqualizer system prior to occlusal splint therapy for treating temporomandibular disorders: a randomized controlled trial.

Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) present a public health issue and are one of the most common musculoskeletal conditions causing chronic pain. This study compares the outcomes of occlusal splint therapy in patients with TMD following two different maxillomandibular relationship (MMR) registration techniques. 40 TMD patients were randomly allocated to MMR registration with the Aqualizer system (AQU) or with chin point guidance (CPG) prior to fabricating occlusal splints. TMD symptoms, subjective pain intensity, and quality of life (QoL) were recorded at baseline and after 3 and 6 months. The t

Maintenance of Segmental Maxillary Expansion: The Use of Custom, Virtually Designed, and Manufactured Palatal Appliances Without the Use of an Occlusal Splint.

Expansion of the maxilla using a segmental Le Fort I osteotomy is a routine and commonly used procedure in the treatment of dentofacial deformities. Although orthognathic surgery has seen tremendous advancement in technology, including virtual surgical planning and customized hardware, some room for advancement exists in the maintenance of surgical maxillary expansion. Traditionally, this has been accomplished with retention of a maxillary occlusal splint 4 to 8 weeks postoperatively. This article introduces some novel techniques to help maintain this expansion, including the intraoperative tr

Three-dimensional finite element analysis of temporomandibular joint stresses following botulinum toxin injection and occlusal splint therapy in bruxism.

BACKGROUND: Bruxism-related clenching can impose excessive mechanical loads on the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), particularly in the presence of anterior disc displacement (ADD). Understanding how different therapeutic strategies influence joint stress under these conditions can support exploratory, hypothesis-generating assessment of biomechanical unloading within patient-specific models. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate TMJ stress distributions under normal and displaced disc conditions and to assess the biomechanical effects of simulated treatment strategies using a patient-specific

Treatment of condylar osteophyte in temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis with muscle balance occlusal splint and long-term follow-up: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Condylar osteophytes, a remodeling form of temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJ OA), mainly manifest as marginal angular outgrowths of the condyle. Previous researchers have advocated surgical removal of condylar osteophytes. Reports on the effect of occlusal splint on TMJ OA patients' joints have mostly focused on treatment with this splint, which can reduce the absorption of the affected condyle and promote repair and regeneration. However, the effect of the splint on the dissolution of condylar osteophytes has not yet been reported. CASE SUMMARY: A 68-year-old female pat
