Human Melioidosis.

The causative agent of melioidosis, Burkholderia pseudomallei, a tier 1 select agent, is endemic in Southeast Asia and northern Australia, with increased incidence associated with high levels of rainfall. Increasing reports of this condition have occurred worldwide, with estimates of up to 165,000 cases and 89,000 deaths per year. The ecological niche of the organism has yet to be clearly defined, although the organism is associated with soil and water. The culture of appropriate clinical material remains the mainstay of laboratory diagnosis. Identification is best done by phenotypic methods,

Global geographical distribution of Toxoplasma gondii genotypes from dogs: A systematic review.

Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) is a ubiquitous protozoan parasite with a complex life cycle involving various intermediate hosts, including dogs. Dogs can act as intermediate hosts for T. gondii, allowing the parasite to undergo asexual reproduction within their tissues. This can lead to the formation of tissue cysts containing bradyzoites, which can be transmitted to other hosts. Therefore, the infectious strains of T. gondii in dogs could reflect the primary genotypes infecting the environment, humans, and animals. This comprehensive research aims to assess the genetic diversity of T. gondii

[Epidemic situation and trend of dengue fever in Belt and Road countries].

Objective: To analyze epidemic situation of dengue fever in 2019 and the incidence trends from 2013 to 2019 in the Belt and Road countries. Methods: We used age-standardized incidence rate (ASR) which was from Global Burden of Disease Study 2019 to describe the epidemic situation of dengue fever in 2019. The estimated annual percentage change(EAPC) of the ASR was calculated to assess dengue fever incidence trends from 2013 to 2019. Results: The 2019 GBD dengue fever incidence records showed that in 145 Belt and Road countries, 93 (64.14%) countries had dengue fever epidemics. In 2019, there we

Distribution of polybrominated diphenyl ethers in breast milk, cord blood and placentas: a systematic review.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) have been extensively used as flame retardants in consumer products. PBDEs rapidly bioaccumulate in the environment, food, wild animals and humans. In this review, we investigated the harmful effects of PBDEs on humans, especially in early life, and summarised the levels of PBDEs in human biological samples (breast milk, cord blood and placentas). In addition, we described the spatiotemporal distribution of PBDEs in this review. PBDE levels in breast milk, cord blood and placentas were generally higher in North America than in other regions, such as Asia,

Protist-dominated hard substrate faunas thrive at the deepest ocean depths.

Deep-sea hard substrates host faunal novelties and distinct evolutionary lineages. However, sessile organisms on rocks are difficult to sample and largely unknown at extreme hadal depths. Here, we report a deep hard-substrate fauna (9000 to 10,898 meters), comprising 32 species of six protist and metazoan phyla, most millimeter-sized and new to science, from the Kermadec and Mariana trenches, using the manned submersible Fendouzhe. We show that the filamentous organisms dominating these assemblages are heterotrophic foraminiferans, challenging the earlier chemolithoautotrophic hypothesis. Larg

A male Denisovan mandible from Pleistocene Taiwan.

Denisovans are an extinct hominin group defined by ancient genomes of Middle to Late Pleistocene fossils from southern Siberia. Although genomic evidence suggests their widespread distribution throughout eastern Asia and possibly Oceania, so far only a few fossils from the Altai and Tibet are confidently identified molecularly as Denisovan. We identified a hominin mandible (Penghu 1) from Taiwan (10,000 to 70,000 years ago or 130,000 to 190,000 years ago) as belonging to a male Denisovan by applying ancient protein analysis. We retrieved 4241 amino acid residues and identified two Denisovan-sp

Thoracic radiologic manifestations of melioidosis.

Melioidosis (Burkholderia pseudomallei) is a gram-negative bacterial infection that is highly endemic in Southeast Asia and Oceania. Pulmonary disease is the most common form of involvement. The clinical-radiologic thoracic manifestations of melioidosis can be classified as acute, subacute, subclinical, and chronic forms. Radiographic findings include nodular, alveolar, or mixed infiltration/consolidation with or without cavities. Pleural effusion, pneumothorax, and pericardial involvement can be seen. Melioidosis can easily be confused with other infections, especially tuberculosis. Suspicion

Epidemiological review of human and animal fascioliasis in Egypt.

One of the neglected food-borne-diseases in the international public health arena is fascioliasis. It is a serious infectious parasitic disease infecting humans and animals worldwide and tops all the zoonotic helminthes. Human cases are being increasingly reported from Europe, the Americas, Oceania, Africa and Asia. Hence, human fascioliasis is considered now as a zoonosis of major global and regional importance. In Egypt, animal and human fascioliasis is an endemic clinical and epidemiological health problem. Doubtless, understanding the epidemiology of the parasitic diseases and factors affe

Multiple recombinant noroviruses in Japan.

A total of 417 fecal specimens collected from sporadic pediatric cases of acute gastroenteritis in Japan from 2005 to 2006 were tested for noroviruses by RT-PCR. Noroviruses were detected in 44 of 417 (10.1%) fecal specimens tested. Of these, the GII/3 was the most predominant genotype with a prevalence rate of 56.8%, followed by 34% of the GII/4 and others. Phylogenetic analysis reveals that multiple recombinant noroviruses, which were both dependently and independently introduced from four different continents (Asia, America, Europe, and Oceania), emerged to cause acute gastroenteritis among

Cucullanus oceaniensis sp. n. (Nematoda: Cucullanidae) from Pacific eels (Anguilla spp.).

A new species of parasitic nematode, Cucullanus oceaniensis sp. n., is described from the intestine of the giant mottled eel Anguilla marmorata (type host) from Futuna Island (Wallis and Futuna Islands, Polynesia) and from A. marmorata and Anguilla sp. (cf. obscura) from Fiji Islands (Melanesia, South Pacific). The main distinguishing characteristics are the length of spicules (668-1,020 microm), situation of deirids (slightly anterior to the oesophago-intestinal junction) and the excretory pore (some distance posterior to the end of oesophagus), and the arrangement of caudal papillae in the m

Effects of kava on neuromuscular transmission and muscle contractility.

The effects of kava, a native drink from Oceania, on neuromuscular transmission and muscle contractility have been examined in mouse phrenic nerve-hemidiaphragm and frog sartorius muscle preparations using twitch tension and intracellular recording techniques. The extent of muscle paralysis induced by kava was similar in both directly and indirectly stimulated mouse hemidiaphragms. The neuromuscular blockade produced was poorly reversed by calcium and by neostigmine. Intracellular recordings from frog sartorius muscles showed that kava depressed the amplitude of both miniature end-plate potent

Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis Recurrence After Liver Transplantation: A Systematic Review and Updated Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is an immune-mediated cholestatic liver disease. Liver transplantation (LT) remains the only definitive treatment for patients with advanced disease. However, recurrence of PSC (rPSC) after LT is still a significant clinical challenge. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence and incidence of rPSC following transplantation and to identify factors associated with its occurrence. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational cohorts by searching PubMed, Embase and Cochrane for studies. Statistical

Spatiotemporal patterns of rheumatic heart disease burden attributable to high systolic blood pressure, high sodium diet, and lead exposure (1990 to 2019): a longitudinal observational study.

BACKGROUND: Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) continues to be a significant global health concern, exhibiting unique regional disparities. Although there is a noted decline in the burden of RHD, the specific causatives for this decrease remain unclear. This study aims to identify and quantify the spatiotemporal patterns related to the RHD-attributable risk burden. METHODS: The data pertaining to deaths and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) attributable to RHD risk were drawn from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study conducted from 1990 to 2019. These data, categorized by age, gender, and

The epidemic of esophageal adenocarcinoma.

The incidence and mortality related to esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC) have been increasing in the United States, several European countries, and Oceania for the past 2 to 3 decades. Survival remains dismal, with little improvement during the same time period. Variations in the coding, classification, and detection of gastroesophageal malignancy may have contributed partially to the observed trends. Remarkable differences related to gender, ethnicity, and geography characterize the epidemiology of EAC. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is the main risk factor for Barrett's esophagus, whic

Worldwide trends in hypertension prevalence and progress in treatment and control from 1990 to 2019: a pooled analysis of 1201 population-representative studies with 104 million participants.

BACKGROUND: Hypertension can be detected at the primary health-care level and low-cost treatments can effectively control hypertension. We aimed to measure the prevalence of hypertension and progress in its detection, treatment, and control from 1990 to 2019 for 200 countries and territories. METHODS: We used data from 1990 to 2019 on people aged 30-79 years from population-representative studies with measurement of blood pressure and data on blood pressure treatment. We defined hypertension as having systolic blood pressure 140 mm Hg or greater, diastolic blood pressure 90 mm Hg or greater,

Human Monkeypox: A Comprehensive Narrative Review and Analysis of the Public Health Implications.

Recently, numerous cases of monkeypox were reported from several non-endemic countries in Europe, North America, and Oceania, suggesting an unusual and alarming public health issue, particularly considering that the disease is not directly related to human or animal travels. Attention is currently being drawn to this phenomenon since more than 70% of the global population is no longer vaccinated against smallpox. Indeed, the smallpox vaccination also confers some indirect degree of protection against other poxviruses, including monkeypox. We performed a narrative review to describe the existin
