The group of benign epithelial odontogenic tumors consists of the four member types of the ameloblastoma family (solid/multicystic, extraosseous/peripheral, desmoplastic, unicystic), squamous odontogenic tumors, calcifying odontogenic tumors, adenomatoid odontogenic tumors, and keratocystic odontogenic tumors, the former "keratocysts" that were recently reclassified by the World Health Organization and are now regarded as tumors. The latter are by far the most frequent tumors in this group, followed by solid/multicystic ameloblastoma. Although the etiology of these lesions is still unknown, a

A radicular cyst associated with carious teeth is a very common odontogenic lesion in the oral cavity, but calcifications in residual radicular cysts are quite rare. We report one such case where a routine pre-implant radiographic assessment revealed a mixed periapical radiopaque radiolucent lesion in the right maxillary central incisor region. Histological and radiographic studies show that there is a slow increase in the mineralized deposits within the cyst lumen with time. This becomes prominent histochemically in cysts more than 8 years old and radiographically 6 years later, as seen in ou

BACKGROUND: Ghost cell odontogenic carcinoma (GCOC) is a rare malignant odontogenic epithelial tumor with features of benign calcifying odontogenic cysts. Herein, we report two new cases of GCOC and systematically review the previous literature.
CASE SUMMARY: In case 1, a 46-year-old man complained of painless swelling of the right maxilla for 3 years, with a 1-mo history of hemorrhinia in the right nasal cavity. In case 2, a 72-year-old man was referred to our hospital with a chief complaint of painful swelling of the right mandible. Initially, the preliminary diagnoses were ameloblastomas.

A dentigerous cyst (DC) is a developmental odontogenic cyst that involves the crown or a portion of the crown of an unerupted or impacted tooth. Mandibular third molars are the most commonly implicated teeth in this type of cyst. DC can be asymptomatic and detected by an ordinary radiographic examination. Two massive DC with deeply impacted third molars were treated by marsupialization followed by surgical extraction and enucleation of the residual lining. In both cases, sensation on the lower lip and chin remained normal, and complete bone healing was achieved. Decompression by simple marsupi

Cementifying fibroma is considered as a benign, osseous tumour, which arises from the periodontal ligament and is composed of varying amounts of cementum, bone and fibrous tissue. It is very closely related to other fibro-osseous lesions like fibrous dysplasia, cemental periapical dysplasia and other calcifying odontogenic cysts and tumour. We report a case of this entity along with differentiating radiographic features that set it apart from other fibro-osseous lesions.

The human homologue of the Drosophila segment polarity gene PTCH1, a tumor suppressor gene within the Sonic Hedgehog pathway has been implicated as the mutation responsible for nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS) as well as many other sporadic neoplasms. The calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor (CEOT) is a rare and aggressive tumor of the jaws. The objective of this study was to investigate the role of the Sonic hedgehog pathway in the pathogenesis of the CEOT. We evaluated the protein distribution of PTCH and the transcription factors Gli1 and Gli2 within seven cases using immunoh

UNLABELLED: Radicular cysts (RCs) are one of the most common odontogenic cystic lesions of inflammatory origin. It originates mostly from epithelial residues in periodontal ligaments secondary to inflammation. The pathogenesis involves the activation of epithelial cell rests of Malaseez after physical, chemical, or bacterial injury. Radiographically, it is seen as a well-defined unilocular lesion of size >1.5 cm. RCs are considered rare in the primary dentition, comprising only 0.5-3.3% of the total number of RCs in both primary and permanent dentitions. This is the first case to be reported o

A Rushton's hyaline body (HB) is a concretion occasionally found in odontogenic cysts. Unspecified substances produced by the lining epithelium or derived from blood components have been suggested as possible causes of HB formation, but the origin of HBs is still elusive. This study aimed to clarify the origin of HBs. Ten specimens with HBs were obtained from 400 odontogenic cysts. HBs were stained by orcein and Congo red. Immunohistochemical examination revealed that HBs were positive for hair keratin and keratin 17. Hair keratin was concentrated in HBs, and cells with hair keratin expression

Dentinogenic ghost cell tumor (DGCT) is a rare odontogenic neoplasm, representing a solid variant of the calcifying odontogenic cyst (COC), accounting for 2%-14% of all COCs and <0.5% of odontogenic tumors. Its unique histological and clinical characteristics, coupled with its potential for local invasiveness, underscore the necessity for accurate diagnosis and management. This article reports two cases of DGCT Case 1involves a 13-year-old boy presented with the absence of permanent teeth 4 and 5. Radiographic examinations revealed a mixed radiolucent-radiopaque lesion in the left mandible ass

BACKGROUND: The occurrence of hybrid odontogenic lesions with two or more morphologically distinct components is a rare phenomenon and poses a diagnostic challenge. We aimed to study the clinical, radiological, and pathological features and behavior of hybrid odontogenic lesions, to enhance awareness about these rare lesions.
METHOD: Hematoxylin and Eosin slides of hybrid odontogenic lesions diagnosed between January 01, 2012 and December 31, 2020, were reviewed. Demographic and radiological information were obtained from the patient's medical records.
RESULTS: 8 cases were diagnosed with a

Ghost cell tumors are a family of lesions that range in presentation from cyst to solid neoplasm and in behavior from benign to locally aggressive or metastatic. All are characterized by the presence of ameloblastic epithelium, ghost cells, and calcifications. This report presents the cases of a 14-year-old girl with a calcifying cystic odontogenic tumor (CCOT) and a 65-year-old woman with a peripheral dentinogenic ghost cell tumor (DGCT) with dysplastic changes, a rare locally invasive tumor of odontogenic epithelium. The first patient presented with a 1-year history of slowly progressing pai

Desmoplastic ameloblastoma (DA) exhibits important differences in gender, anatomic distribution, radiographic findings, and histologic appearance compared to other types of ameloblastoma. Radiologically, DA is seen either as ill-defined mass containing osteolytic and sclerotic areas or as multifocal radiodense flecks within radiolucent background resembling a honeycomb. The radiographic differential diagnosis includes fibro-osseous lesions such as cemento-ossifying fibroma, fibrous dysplasia, calcifying odontogenic cyst, and chronic sclerosing osteomyelitis. Thus, DA should primarily be includ

We report a case of primary intraosseous mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the maxilla, an exceedingly rare condition with only nine cases documented in the literature, contributing to a prolonged diagnostic timeline. A 58-year-old woman underwent surgery four years earlier for a left maxillary mass at another hospital, initially diagnosed as a calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor. Due to residual tumor growth, she was referred to our hospital for a second surgery. Histopathological analysis and MAML2 gene fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) testing confirmed the diagnosis of mucoepidermoid

Gorlin's syndrome (naevoid basal cell carcinoma) is an autosomal dominant tumor-predisposition syndrome, classically consists of multiple basal cell carcinomas of the skin, odontogenic keratocyst of the jaw, various skeletal abnormalities, and lamellar falx calcifications. Many associated lesions have been reported. We report a case of Gorlin's syndrome in a 22-year-old man in whom CT and MR images showed unusual findings of the thin corpus callosum and third ventricular cyst. We present a case of this syndrome with special emphasis on its unusual neuroradiological findings and radiological ma

We describe a case of CEOT of the mandible, which underwent malignant transformation and developed metastatic tumors of the lung after repeated local recurrence. The primary tumor revealed typical histological features of benign CEOT showing sheets of polyhedral epithelial cells associated with abundant eosinophilic amyloid-like materials. On the other hand, the locally recurrent tumors had malignant features, such as increased nuclear pleomorphism with frequent mitotic figures and vascular invasion of tumor cells, as well as increased proliferative activity assessed by immunostaining for Ki-6
