BACKGROUND: Pediatric all-terrain vehicle (ATV) injuries have been increasing annually for more than a decade. The purpose of this study was to prospectively evaluate crash circumstances and clinical outcomes resulting from pediatric ATV crashes.
METHODS: Three pediatric trauma centers prospectively collected data from patients during their hospitalization for injuries sustained in ATV crashes from July 2007 through June 2012. Patients completed a 35-item questionnaire describing the crash circumstances (ATV engine size, safety equipment use, and training/experience). Clinical data (injuries,

BACKGROUND: Despite the significant morbidity and mortality associated with all-terrain vehicle (ATV) use in children, their use continues to increase dramatically. To determine the frequency and impact of spinal fractures in children and adolescents injured in ATV accidents, we reviewed all 4 of the available Kids' Inpatient Databases.
METHODS: The Kids' Inpatient Databases (http://www.ahrq.gov/data/hcup/hcupkid.htm) from 1997, 2000, 2003, and 2006 were reviewed using e-codes for children (age less than 18 y) injured in ATV accidents. From the data on ATV accidents, children who sustained sp

The consent decrees between the US Consumer Product Safety Commission and the major distributors of all-terrain vehicles (ATV), which were designed to address ATV-related injuries and deaths, expired in April, 1998. While national estimates of nonfatal and fatal injuries involving ATVs declined after the consent decrees went into effect 10 years ago, the injury estimates have stabilized in recent years. To gain a better understanding of current ATV use patterns, the CPSC sponsored a national probability survey of ATV drivers in the fall of 1997. The survey was designed to collect information a

Hand-arm vibration was measured on the handlebars of terrain vehicles (N = 36) and a postal inquiry was made among N = 2705 reindeer herders (snowmobile drivers). Since many subjects had also used other vibrating tools the snowmobile group proper (N = 334) was established. In the whole group 19% of the subjects reported having experienced white finger attacks and 48% numbness of the hands. The frequency-weighted acceleration of snowmobile vibration was 3.5 m/s2, and risk evaluation using the ISO 5349 standard predicted the prevalence of white finger well in the snowmobile group proper. The vib

Injuries caused by mountain sports account for many of the injuries admitted to the University Hospital of Grenoble. Out of 4,490 traumas, 470 were injuries sustained during the practice of mountain sports. While the frequency of these accidents does not evolve much, the etiological distribution depends on fashion. Thus an increasing number of lesions caused by cross-country biking has been noted during the past two years. We find it urgent to propose protective measures adapted to this new sport.

The need for products that improve performance of security officers is counterbalanced these days by budgetary constraints. While this may limit major investments in security systems and personnel, less costly improvements or innovations might be worth considering. In this report, we will discuss four advances that may be valuable not only in hospital security, but in other industries as well. One of them, a smoke filter, was originally developed for the hotel industry. Another, a drug detection device, may replace the use of undercover agents or drug-sniffing' dogs in certain circumstances. T

Run-off-road crashes often result in fatal and severe injuries on rural highways. Clear zones and W-beam guardrails are often installed to reduce run-off-road crashes and the extent of severe injuries. While the effectiveness of clear zone improvement and W-beams has been studied, their comparative effects in a similar empirical setting are not well known. At the same time, crashes on rural highways are often characterized by a high frequency of zero counts; however, models capable of addressing this issue-such as the Poisson-Gamma Lindley models-have not yet been tested in before-after evalua

BACKGROUND: Riding off-road vehicles is associated with the risk of injury to the extremities. There are two main types of four-wheel recreational off-road vehicles: quads or all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), which are essentially four-wheel off-road motorcycles, and recreational off-highway vehicles (ROVs), also colloquially referred to as utility terrain vehicles, which have side-by-side seating, higher maximum speeds, and a roll cage. There are multiple orthopaedic society position statements on ATVs, but none on ROVs. Perhaps this is because the injury patterns and differences between the two v

OBJECTIVE: All-terrain vehicle (ATV) rollover events can lead to serious and fatal injuries. Crush protection devices (CPDs) are intended to reduce injury by reducing the frequency of significant contact between an inverted ATV and rider. Currently, field data on real-world ATV rollovers are primarily limited to injury causing events and lack ATV and rider dynamics necessary to evaluate injury mitigation effectiveness and possible unintended consequences of CPDs. Unlike restrained automobile occupants, ATV rider posture and positioning are highly variable and scant data are available to define

The objective of the study was the recognition and evaluation of annual exposure to noise among private farmers on farms engaged in mixed (plant-animal) production. The study covered 16 family farms using land of the size 13-30 ha (20.4 ha on average). The farms were equipped with agricultural tractors (2.4 tractors on average), selected workshop machinery, saws for logging and machines for the production of fodder. The following basic parameters were applied for the hygienic evaluation of noise: total monthly exposure and mean equivalent daily exposure expressed in Pa2 h. The study indicated

PURPOSE: Electric scooters (e-scooters) have rapidly become a mainstream method of transportation in the U.S. but there is consequently limited data on their safety profile. This study evaluates ophthalmic injuries related to e-scooters compared to non-motorized scooters and off-road vehicles (ORV).
METHODS: This retrospective study uses the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (2014 to 2023). Ocular injury profiles associated with conventional scooters, e-scooters, and off-road vehicles were included.
RESULTS: E-scooter ocular injuries rose by 1950% between 2014 and 2023. E-scoote

PURPOSE: Secondary task engagement that distracts the driver is a contributing factor to motor vehicle crashes among adults. However, the association between eye glance duration and crash risk with novice teenage drivers has not been determined.
METHODS: Vehicles of 42 newly licensed teenage drivers were instrumented with cameras, accelerometers, Global Positioning System(s) (GPS), and other devices. Data were collected continuously for 18 months. Crashes and near crashes (CNCs) were identified by examining highly elevated gravitational force events. Video footage of the 6 seconds prior to ea

During the past 10 years almost 1,500 people have been killed in motor vehicle collisions with animals. Police reports on 147 fatal vehicle-animal crashes during 2000-2002 were obtained from nine states. The goal was to determine common crash types, types of animals involved, and steps that could be taken to reduce the crashes and injuries. Seventy-seven percent of the struck animals were deer, but six other types of animals were involved including small ones such as dogs. Eighty percent of the crashes were single-vehicle events. In most of these cases a motorcycle struck an animal and the rid

OBJECTIVE: Recreational off-highway vehicle (ROHV) crashes are of concern because sales of these vehicles have been growing rapidly and because newer vehicles tend to have significantly greater performance than older models. We evaluated the available data to understand trends in ROHV crashes and the factors that contributed to serious injury.
METHODS: We combined information from (1) the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS), (2) a database compiled by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, and (3) a vehicle sales database. These aggregated data were used to describe trends, demographic

UNLABELLED: All-terrain vehicles (ATVs) are a popular source of outdoor activity in the United States, particularly in West Virginia. During the period of time from 1999 to 2007, deaths associated with ATVs in West Virginia increased by 28%. Helmet use among bicycle and motorcycle riders has been shown to decrease morbidity and mortality following trauma.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective observational study to compare injury patterns, hospital course, and resource utilization of non-helmeted and helmeted riders involved in ATV accidents using data from the West Virginia Trauma Center Sys
