This study offers insights into the complex relationship between chemical species constituting air pollution and chemosensory function. We examined the relationship between chemical species known to contribute to air pollution and assault human health and chemosensory sensitivity. Chemosensory sensitivity data was retrieved from a large-scale study involving 711 urban-dwelling participants inhabiting 10 different regions of the globe. Their olfactory threshold towards phenyl ethyl alcohol (PEA) and olfactory/trigeminal threshold towards Eucalyptol was measured in a multicentre study. We matche

Multisensory integration is ubiquitous, facilitating perception beyond the limit of individual senses. This mechanism is especially salient when individual sensory input is weak (i.e., the principle of inverse effectiveness), fusing subthreshold cues into tangible percepts. Nevertheless, it is unclear how this rule applies to threat perception, synthesizing elusive, discrete traces of a threat into a discernible danger signal. In light of hemispheric asymmetry in threat processing, we combined parafoveal stimulus presentation and the contralateral P1 visual event-related potential to investiga

A modification of a flow olfactometer with a new application appartus, with which "quasi-free" nasal respiration allows the elimination of adaptation without a special testing room, subsequent results using this device to examine olfactory thresholds before and after septum operations, as well as reference to threshold increases in 57 post-operative cases of cheilognathopalatoschisis are reported. An esthesio-neuroblastoma as well as the deformity syndrome with cheilognathopalatoschisis and encephalodystrophy are used as examples for combined olfactory transmission and perception disorders. St

PURPOSE: To evaluate if and how post-traumatic brain injury (TBI) olfactory dysfunction affects the quality of life (QoL).
METHODS: In this case-control observational study, 32 adults with post-TBI olfactory dysfunction (cases) were matched with 32 TBI patients with intact olfactory function (controls). All subjects self-rated their olfactory function using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). Cases also underwent objective olfactory function assessment with the Sniffin' Sticks test, which generated a Threshold, Discrimination, and Identification (TDI) score. QoL was assessed with the Questionnai

BACKGROUND: Animal experiments indicate that 1,1,1-trichloroethane can cause degeneration of the olfactory epithelium. The effects of 1,1,1-trichloroethane on human odor perception still have not been investigated. The goal of this study was to learn more about acute effects of 1,1,1-trichloroethane.
METHODS: Twelve healthy, nonsmoking students were exposed to 200 and 20 ppm (control) 1,1,1-trichloroethane in an exposure chamber for 4 hours according to a crossover design. Olfactory functioning was investigated with the Sniffin' Sticks. The test includes the determination of the detection thr

The objective of the present study was to analyse the frequency and specific features of olfactory dysfunction associated with various diseases of the nose and paranasal sinuses in pregnant women and patients with psychic disorders. Among the patients presenting with various forms of exterior nasal deformities, the olfactory thresholds were especially elevated in those suffering from rhinoscoliosis due to deflection of the nasal septum and disturbances of nasal breathing. Moreover, the elevation of olfactory thresholds was documented practically in all the patients with acute sinusitis and in

Olfactory physiology involves four main steps: nasal airflow perireceptor events, transduction, and central olfaction. Complex and diverse physiological processes are involved at each step and may be undermined by numerous pathological processes. Nasal airflow physiology involves fluid mechanics and specifc physicochemical properties of odorants; its main pathology is nasal polyposis. Perireceptor events involve transport molecules and enzymes which eliminate xenobiotics; its main pathology is chronic rhinitis. Transduction is the role of primary olfactory neurons, which detect and discriminat

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Olfactory dysfunction (OD) is a well-established prodromal feature of Parkinson's disease (PD). However, the association between olfactory loss and gustatory alterations - particularly umami perception - and their relationship with non-motor symptoms (NMS), affective status, reward-related eating behavior, and quality of life (QoL) remain incompletely characterized. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between objectively defined anosmia and taste perception, NMS, mood disturbances, reward-driven eating behavior, and QoL in patients with PD.

Glycans are components of glycoconjugates and function in odorant recognition and cell signaling in the olfactory mucosa. However, little is known about glycan expression in the olfactory mucosa in the presence of neuroinflammatory disorders, which can influence olfaction. We evaluated the changes in glycan in the olfactory mucosa of rats with experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) by histochemical analyses of 21 lectins. In the olfactory mucosa of normal control rats, 16 lectins bound to olfactory sensory neurons, supporting cells, basal cells, nerve and Bowman's glands, and their ex

It is estimated that 20%-67% of those with COVID-19 develop olfactory disorders, depending on the SARS-CoV-2 variant. However, there is an absence of quick, population-wide olfactory tests to screen for olfactory disorders. The purpose of this study was to provide a proof-of-concept that SCENTinel 1.1, a rapid, inexpensive, population-wide olfactory test, can discriminate between anosmia (total smell loss), hyposmia (reduced sense of smell), parosmia (distorted odor perception), and phantosmia (odor sensation without a source). Participants were mailed a SCENTinel 1.1 test, which measures odor

Ciliopathies are a class of genetic diseases resulting in cilia dysfunction in multiple organ systems, including the olfactory system. Currently, there are no available curative treatments for olfactory dysfunction and other symptoms in ciliopathies. The loss or shortening of olfactory cilia, as seen in multiple mouse models of the ciliopathy Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS), results in olfactory dysfunction. However, the underlying mechanism of the olfactory cilia reduction is unknown, thus limiting the development of therapeutic approaches for BBS and other ciliopathies. Here, we demonstrated tha

Insensitivity to single odors, called specific anosmia, has been repeatedly reported in the literature. The main question of the present study was whether olfactory sensitivity is inducable in subjects with specific anosmia. For this reason the olfactory sensitivity of women with specific anosmia to the volatile steroid androstenone was investigated by threshold measurements at two times, before and after repeated odor exposure. Androstenone is a compound that contributes to human body odor and is found at a higher concentration in male axillary sweat than in female sweat. The results show tha

Sensorimotor feedback is a fundamental mechanism of active sensing. In olfaction, the primary motor behaviour is the sniff. Thus, in active olfactory sensing, we would expect the dynamics of the sniff to change according to detailed odour characteristics. Furthermore, percept-related modulations of sniffing behaviour should correspond to neural activity in participating brain regions. Here we analysed a high-precision functional MRI dataset including more than 4,300 sniffs per participant taken of 160 odours during ~18 hours of scanning, to probe the relationship between odour-induced sniff mo

Biological olfactory perception relies on ionic transport, offering a promising alternative to conventional gas sensors that depend on electronic signal transmission, which often suffer from limitations such as limited sensitivity, high power consumption, and susceptibility to moisture. Inspired by biological olfactory ion channels, nanochannel-based ionic membranes incorporating 2D materials and ionic liquids have been developed. Through functional modifications, these membranes exhibit unique tremella-like structures that optimize gas diffusion pathways and provide effective gas interaction

Salt, known as taste quality, is generally neglected in olfaction, although the olfactory sensory neurons stretch into the salty nasal mucus covering the olfactory epithelium (OE). Using a psychophysical approach, we directly and functionally demonstrate in the awake rat for a variety of structurally diverse odorants that sodium is a critical factor for olfactory perception and sensitivity, both very important components of mammalian communication and sexual behavior. Bathing the olfactory mucus with an iso-osmotic sodium-free buffer solution results in severe deficits in odorant detection. Ho

In humans, olfactory perception appears to be a complex and multidimensional process. Classically, intensity, hedonicity, and familiarity are the main features assessed in perceptual evaluations. Several factors are well known to modulate odor perception such as environmental context, stimulus properties, or individual characteristics. Regarding the latter, female sex hormones may play an important role in modulating odor perception. In this context, few studies have investigated whether odor perception might change during the menstrual cycle in relation to odor category and perceptual feature

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Olfactory dysfunction is a common nonmotor symptom and prodromal marker of Parkinson's disease (PD). Despite its early occurrence, hyposmia is frequently underrecognized, emphasizing the need for objective, culturally appropriate tools. The Indian smell identification test (INSIT) is widely used but relies on binary scoring, which may underestimate residual olfactory function. This study determines the prevalence of olfactory dysfunction in Indian persons with PD (PwPD) using INSIT and evaluates a modified version (mINSIT) with graded scoring as a preliminary proof-o

Advances in theoretical understanding are frequently unlocked by access to large, diverse experimental datasets. Our understanding of olfactory neuroscience and psychophysics remain years behind the other senses, in part because rich datasets linking olfactory stimuli with their corresponding percepts, behaviors, and neural pathways remain scarce. Here we present a concerted effort to unlock and unify dozens of stimulus-linked olfactory datasets across species and modalities under a unified framework called Pyrfume. We present examples of how researchers might use Pyrfume to conduct novel anal

Receptor-ligand interaction models are generally based on a 'lock and key' concept. How far this holds true for olfactory receptors and odor molecules is currently uncertain. Here, we have investigated the response of a human olfactory receptor, OR1D2, to a broad array of odorants and found that there is no simple, direct correlation between a molecule's ability to activate this receptor and the odor impression elicited in the brain. In a parallel study on specific anosmia, we have found no evidence for odor-specific anosmia to either musk or amber, but rather to specific molecules within thes
