Rats with one olfactory bulb removed and the contralateral naris closed can detect odors.

Rats with one olfactory bulb removed were trained to detect 0.5%-0.005% concentrations of amyl acetate. These rats had only a slight decrement in performance when the naris ipsilateral to the intact olfactory bulb was closed. Thus, vapors inhaled through one naris can stimulate olfactory receptor neurons in the contralateral nasal vault. This internasal stimulation is probably mediated by the nasopharyngeal canal or nasopharynx.

Hypothalmic influences on the electrical activity of the olfactory pathway.

By means of evoked potentials a direct efferent connection was found to run from the posterior hypothalmus and medial forebrain bundle to primary olfactory structures (olfactory bulb, olfactory tubercle and prepyriform cortex). The pathway from the hypothalmus to the olfactory bulb follows in the lateral olfactory tract at a conduction velocity 5-10 m/sec. The olfactory tubercle functions as a relay station for the efferent fibers from various sources, running to the olfactory bulb. In animals with electrodes chronically implanted in the olfactory structures, hypothalamic stimulation gives ris

[Olfactory dysfunction : Update on diagnosis and treatment].

Olfactory dysfunction is a common disorder, particularly in elderly people. From the etiologic point of view, we distinguish between sinunasal and non-sinunasal causes of dysosmia. As an important early symptom of neurodegenerative disease, dysosmia is particularly relevant in the diagnosis of Parkinson's or Alzheimer's disease. In addition to complete ENT examination and olfactory testing, e.g., with "Sniffin' Sticks", modern imaging procedures, e. g. MRI, are becoming more and more important for diagnostics, prognosis, and treatment decisions. Olfactory testing in children needs to be adapte

Canine scent detection: an analytical chemistry perspective.

Canine olfactory detection has been applied to explosives and narcotics identification for over five decades, yet the mechanistic and methodological basis of canine detection performance remains insufficiently understood from an analytical chemistry perspective. This review systematically examines canine scent detection through an analytical chemistry framework. The canine olfactory system, characterised by high densities of olfactory receptor cells, favourable nasal airflow dynamics, and extensive neurological processing capacity, provides sensitivity at parts per trillion concentrations as w

Efficacy of Palmitoylethanolamide and Luteolin Association on Post-Covid Olfactory Dysfunction: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Clinical Studies.

Post-Covid Olfactory Dysfunction (PCOD) is characterized by olfactory abnormalities, hyposmia, and anosmia, which are among the most often enduring symptoms in individuals who have recovered from SARS-CoV-2 infection. This disorder has been reported to persist in subsets of patients well after 12 months following infection, significantly affecting their quality of life. Despite the high prevalence of PCOD among patients who suffered from SARS-CoV-2 infection, specific therapeutic strategies are still limited. Among these, emerging evidence seems to indicate the administration of CoUltraPEALut,

[Diagnostics and treatment of olfactory dysfunction].

BACKGROUND: Dysosmia is one of the most common disorders in otorhinolaryngology. However, epidemiological data are lacking and treatment strategies are insufficiently standardized. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency of causes of olfactory disorders and the different therapeutic approaches used in ENT departments in German-speaking countries. The results were also compared to findings of the survey in 2000. Furthermore, a systematic review of treatment strategies was conducted. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In 2010, a two-page survey addressing olfactory dysfunction was s

Anosmia: Differential diagnosis, evaluation, and management.

The ability to scrutinize our surroundings remains heavily dependent on the sense of smell. From the ability to detect dangerous situations such as fires to the recollection of a fond memory triggered by an odor, the advantages of an intact olfactory system cannot be overstated. Outcomes studies have highlighted the profound negative impact of anosmia and parosmia on the overall quality of life. The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders estimates that ∼1.4% of the United States population experiences chronic olfactory dysfunction and smell loss. Efforts have focused

Recovery of structure and function following transection of the primary olfactory nerves in pigeons.

Preliminary experimentation on ring doves to ascertain whether they might regulate any aspects of their reproductive behavior in terms of olfactory cues was vitiated by the discovery that their sectioned olfactory nerves had apparently regenerated. Concurrent work on frogs has shown that the olfactory receptors degenerate after axotomy and are replaced by new ones. This phenomenon was studied in pigeons. All transected nerves were found to be healed. Electrical recording from the regenerated nerves revealed apparently normal receptor function and, indirectly, autonomic reflex responsiveness. P

Intelligent artificial olfactory nervous system with sensory adaptation capabilities.

Accurate gas identification across diverse environments is crucial for the advancement of intelligent artificial olfaction, but remains challenging for conventional data-driven learning approaches. Here, we report an artificial olfactory nervous system capable of reliably identifying novel gas stimuli regardless of environmental variations by leveraging sensory adaptation mechanisms inspired by biological olfactory systems. Inspired by biological olfactory systems, our system effectively integrates artificial olfactory receptor neurons, cortical neurons, and intermediate olfactory neurons that

Cold Shock Disrupts Massed Training-Elicited Memory in Drosophila.

Memory consolidation is a time-dependent process occurring over hours, days, or longer in different species and requires protein synthesis. An apparent exception is a memory type in Drosophila elicited by a single olfactory conditioning episode, which ostensibly consolidates quickly, rendering it resistant to disruption by cold anesthesia a few hours post-training. This anesthesia-resistant memory (ARM), is independent of protein synthesis. Protein synthesis independent memory can also be elicited in Drosophila by multiple massed cycles of olfactory conditioning, and this led to the prevailing

Effects of olfactory enrichment on perioperative neurocognitive disorders in elderly patients undergoing orthopedic surgery: a study protocol of a multi-center randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Neurocognitive disorders are prevalent among older surgical patients, yet their underlying mechanisms and effective interventions remain largely unknown. Studies in rodents and patients suggest a connection between olfactory impairment and perioperative neurocognitive disorder (PND). Previous work in mice demonstrates that anesthesia and surgery can lead to both olfactory impairment and cognitive deficits. Olfactory enrichment, which is also referred to as olfactory training (i.e., daily exposure to multiple odorants), may prove helpful. For example, olfactory enrichment appears to

Use of thallium transport to visualize functional olfactory nerve regeneration in vivo.

OBJECTIVE: To image olfactory nerve regeneration in vivo using a high-resolution gamma cam- era and radiography after nasal administration of thallium-201 (olfacto-scintigraphy). METHODS: Six Wistar rats were trained to avoid the smell of cycloheximide as a test of olfactory function. The olfactory nerve fibers of 3 rats were then carefully transected bilaterally with a Teflon knife, avoiding damage to the olfactory bulbs. The remaining 3 rats underwent sham operations and were used as controls. Steel wires were implanted in the left olfactory bulb of each rat for locating the bulbs with plai

Biomarkers for Early Diagnostic of Mild Cognitive Impairment in Type-2 Diabetes Patients: A Multicentre, Retrospective, Nested Case-Control Study.

BACKGROUND: Both type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) are common age-associated disorders and T2DM patients show an increased risk to suffer from AD, however, there is currently no marker to identify who in T2DM populations will develop AD. Since glycogen synthase kinase-3β (GSK-3β) activity, ApoE genotypes and olfactory function are involved in both T2DM and AD pathogenesis, we investigate whether alterations of these factors can identify cognitive impairment in T2DM patients. METHODS: The cognitive ability was evaluated using Minimum Mental State Examination (MMSE) a

Olfactory dysfunction: common in later life and early warning of neurodegenerative disease.

BACKGROUND: Disturbances of smell and taste are common. About 5% of the general population have anosmia (absence of the sense of smell). Olfactory dysfunction can markedly impair the quality of life. METHODS: Review of pertinent literature retrieved by a selective search. RESULTS: In recent years, simple and reliable tests of the sense of smell have been introduced in otorhinolaryngology. Olfactory testing has become a new focus of attention in neurology as well, mainly because many patients with neurodegenerative diseases-including the majority of those with Parkinson's or Alzheimer's disea

An investigation of some temporal aspects of olfactory coding with the model of multi-site electrical stimulation of the olfactory bulb in the rat.

Electrical stimulation of the olfactory bulb was used to investigate some temporal aspects of olfactory coding, with reference to respiration. Food-deprived rats implanted with permanent electrodes were trained to use bulbar multi-site stimulation patterns as discriminative stimuli for predicting the nature of an incoming reinforcement. Electrical pulse trains (100 Hz) were periodically delivered in phase with precisely defined moments of the respiratory cycle (during inspiration or expiration). Temporal aspects of olfactory coding were first considered through the measurement of the minimum d
