From the One Health Perspective: Schistosomiasis Japonica and Flooding.

Schistosomiasis is a water-borne parasitic disease distributed worldwide, while schistosomiasis japonica localizes in the People's Republic of China, the Philippines, and a few regions of Indonesia. Although significant achievements have been obtained in these endemic countries, great challenges still exist to reach the elimination of schistosomiasis japonica, as the occurrence of flooding can lead to several adverse consequences on the prevalence of schistosomiasis. This review summarizes the influence of flooding on the transmission of schistosomiasis japonica and interventions responding to

One health approach in Nepal: Scope, opportunities and challenges.

One Health (OH) is a collaborative effort to attain optimal health for people, animals and the environment. The concept of OH is still in its infancy in Nepal but is increasingly growing. The Government of Nepal (GoN) has taken some initiatives to tackle burgeoning problems such as antimicrobial resistance, highly pathogenic avian influenza and rabies using OH approach but there are several challenges at the level of implementation. Few non-governmental organizations support GoN to promote an OH approach. The major bottlenecks in implementing OH in Nepal include poor organizational structure t

One Health collaborations for zoonotic disease control in Ethiopia.

Zoonotic diseases require a One Health approach for successful control and elimination due to the nature of their transmission between animals and humans. One Health recognises that the health of humans, animals, and the environment are all interconnected. Ethiopia has committed itself to controlling five prioritised zoonotic diseases (rabies, anthrax, brucellosis, leptospirosis and echinococcosis), using a One Health approach. The National One Health Steering Committee (NOHSC) provides a framework for national stakeholders to address gaps in multisectoral communication, coordination and colla

Integrative modelling for One Health: pattern, process and participation.

This paper argues for an integrative modelling approach for understanding zoonoses disease dynamics, combining process, pattern and participatory models. Each type of modelling provides important insights, but all are limited. Combining these in a '3P' approach offers the opportunity for a productive conversation between modelling efforts, contributing to a 'One Health' agenda. The aim is not to come up with a composite model, but seek synergies between perspectives, encouraging cross-disciplinary interactions. We illustrate our argument with cases from Africa, and in particular from our work

One Health Research in Northern Tanzania - Challenges and Progress.

East Africa has one of the world's fastest growing human populations-many of whom are dependent on livestock-as well as some of the world's largest wildlife populations. Humans, livestock, and wildlife often interact closely, intimately linking human, animal, and environmental health. The concept of One Health captures this interconnectedness, including the social structures and beliefs driving interactions between species and their environments. East African policymakers and researchers are recognising and encouraging One Health research, with both groups increasingly playing a leading role i

Integrating Male Reproductive Health Services: One University Clinic's Story.

Attending a college or university opens a new chapter in a young man's life, and with it comes new experiences, freedoms, and responsibilities. Young adult males in particular are prone to risky behaviors as a result of peer pressure, and this can affect their health. As a result of this risky behavior, reproductive and sexual health could be compromised. Historically, reproductive health (RH) services have predominantly served women and undeserving men. Young men have significant reproductive health risks in the form of sexually transmitted infections (STI). Male sexual behaviors directly aff

One Health approach to Rift Valley fever vaccine development.

Since its discovery in the 1930s, Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) spread across the African continent and invaded the Arabian Peninsula and several islands off the coast of Southeast Africa. The virus causes recurrent outbreaks in these regions, and its continued spread is of global concern. Next-generation veterinary vaccines of improved efficacy and safety are being developed that can soon be used for the widespread vaccination of livestock. However, due to regulatory and economic challenges, vaccine manufacturers have been reluctant to develop a human vaccine. Recent innovations in veterinar

What health are we talking about? Biodiversity as the missing link between One Health and Planetary Health.

Health has become a central term in global sustainability policy, yet it is often used without sufficient conceptual precision. Public health, global health, One Health, EcoHealth, GeoHealth, and Planetary Health each emphasize different dimensions of the relationship between humans, animals, and the environment. In policy contexts, however, these distinctions are frequently blurred. We argue that biodiversity is often treated as an environmental co-benefit rather than as a foundational determinant of health. This weakens the implementation of One Health approaches because biodiversity underpi

Adapting the One Health zoonotic disease prioritization tool for subnational One Health implementation through comparative analysis of disease severity and governance-driven approaches.

BACKGROUND: Zoonotic and environmentally driven health threats increasingly emerge at the human-animal-environment interface, highlighting the need for prevention-oriented and community-centered One Health approaches. This study adapted the OHZDP tool developed by the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (U.S. CDC) for subnational use in Thailand, integrating environmental and social science perspectives and expanding community participation to ensure context-specific and operationally relevant prioritization. METHODS: A comparative mixed-methods case study was conducted i

Eco-affective one health: A public health framework for climate, emotion, and systemic resilience.

OBJECTIVE: Climate change affects population health not only through physical exposures but also through emotional and psychosocial pathways that shape vulnerability, adaptive behaviour, and systemic resilience. Existing One Health frameworks insufficiently integrate these affective dimensions. This paper proposes an Eco-Affective One Health framework to incorporate emotional responses into public health surveillance, preparedness, and governance. STUDY DESIGN: Conceptual synthesis of interdisciplinary literature. METHODS: Peer-reviewed literature published between 2018 and 2025 was identifi

[Exophiala on the Stored Apples: Evaluation with One Health Perspective].

The one health perspective is an integrative and holistic approach that recognizes the interconnection and interdependence of human, animal and plant health and aims to improve each sustainably. This perspective has gained particular importance following the coronavirus disease-2019 pandemic and has been acknowledged as a component of public health. Fungal infections also pose significant risks to ecosystems, ranging from crops to animals and humans. These risks partly arise from human and animal mobility and have increased alongside climate change. Therefore, food safety has become an integra

Klebsiella pneumoniae: a connecting link in the One Health concept.

Klebsiella pneumoniae is the major cause of hospital-acquired infections worldwide. Besides hospitals, it is widely prevalent in diverse environmental settings, emphasizing the need to study it through the One Health approach. Dissemination of multidrug resistant, and/or hypervirulent, strains in the environment exacerbates the problem. However, only a few studies have examined its prevalence in the environment, leaving gaps in our understanding of its ecology across diverse habitats. A deeper insight into the pathogen's ecology is necessary to understand its dissemination routes. In this revi

Beyond the incubator: applying a "one health" approach in the NICU.

A "one health" approach recognises that human health, animal health and planetary health are closely interlinked and that a transdisciplinary approach is required to fully understand and maintain global health. While, by necessity, Neonatal Intensive Care has traditionally focused on the acutely unwell newborn, the avoidance of long-term harm is core to many management decisions. The COVID 19 pandemic and climate crisis have brought into sharp relief the importance of a "one health" approach as part of long-term health promotion in the holistic care of neonates, who may survive to experience t

Wildlife and parasitic infections: A One Health perspective in Greece.

While research on the parasitic fauna of wildlife in Greece is currently limited, conducted studies have provided valuable insights into the prevalence of parasitic infections in wild carnivores, omnivores, and herbivores. This review consolidates the existing data on the endoparasites detected in wild animals in Greece, specifically focusing on those that pose established or potential zoonotic risks. Over the last 60 years, various parasite species such as Leishmania infantum, Cryptosporidium spp., Toxoplasma gondii, Sarcocystis spp., Toxocara canis, Ancylostoma caninum, Capillaria spp., Bayl

Sensors for surveillance of RNA viruses: a One Health perspective.

RNA viruses, especially those capable of cross-species transmission, pose a serious threat to human, animal, and environmental health, as exemplified by the 2024 outbreak of the highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 virus in cattle, unpasteurised milk, and workers on dairy farms in the USA. This escalating risk of a new RNA virus pandemic highlights the urgent need to implement One Health strategies. However, the centralised virus detection systems currently in use fall short of meeting the required level of virus surveillance and infection diagnosis, particularly in resource-limited regions.
