Factor structure and psychometric properties of the Italian version of the fear of missing out scale in emerging adults and adolescents.

Fear of missing out (FoMO) has been linked to problematic social media use and negative health outcomes among adolescents and emerging adults. The 10-item Fear of Missing Out Scale (FoMO) is the most used instrument to measure FoMO levels and, for this reason, it seems relevant to evaluate its psychometric properties across various cultures. In Study 1, exploratory factor analysis was conducted on the scale items using a sample of 436 college students [F = 51.1%; M (SD) = 22.13 (2.78) years old]. In Study 2, confirmatory factor analysis was conducted in order to determine whether the results o

Addicted to socialising and still lonely: A comparative, corpus-driven analysis of problematic social networking site use.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Problematic Social Networking Site Use (PSNSU) is not a formally recognised addiction, but it is increasingly discussed as such in academic research and online. Taking a quantitative, exploratory approach, this study aims to (1) determine whether PSNSU is presented like clinically defined addictions by the affected community and (2) address how well measurements of PSNSU fit with the thematic content found within the associated discourse. METHODS: Four corpora were created for this study: a corpus concerning PSNSU and three control corpora concerning established addiction

The association between problematic social networking site use, dark triad traits, and emotion dysregulation.

BACKGROUND: Social networking sites (SNSs) allow people to socially connect with each other, collaborate, and share information. However, problematic SNS use (PSNSU) may be associated with negative personality traits. The present study investigated the associations between PSNSU, dark triad personality traits, and emotion dysregulation. METHOD: In the present study, 555 SNS users (Mage = 33.32 years, SD = 10.88) completed an online survey comprising measures of PSNSU, dark triad personality traits, and emotion dysregulation. RESULTS: Bivariate correlations showed that PSNSU was significantly

Motivations to Start and Stop Using Sexual Networking Applications Among Adolescent Sexual Minority Men.

INTRODUCTION: Although adolescent sexual minority men (ASMM) use sexual networking applications (SNAs), little is known about their reasons to start and stop using these apps. METHODS: Between February and April 2018, 156 ASMM in the USA aged 15-17 completed an online survey and answered open-ended questions that elicited their reasons to start and stop using SNAs. We analyzed responses through an inductive thematic analysis. RESULTS: The most frequent reasons to use SNAs were to find users to date, and to establish friendships or socially connect with other users due to loneliness. Particip

Adolescent Girls With Anorexia Nervosa Clinical Profiles in Relation to Their Social Networks Use.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, social networks (SNs) have increasingly become a core activity adolescent's daily life. Their impact on mental health is an actual worldwide concern. This massive usage of social network has been suggested to increase the risk of depressive and anxiety disorders, as well as alterations in sleep quality and quantity. In particular, it has been suggested that it could increase concerns about body image and thereby encourage eating disorders. Aiming at further investigating these relations, this study examined, for the first time, the links between the clinical profil

Exploring drivers of pre-exposure prophylaxis uptake among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men in Malaysia.

BACKGROUND: Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a valuable HIV prevention strategy, particularly among men who have sex with men (MSM); however, PrEP uptake is below the threshold needed to curb the HIV epidemic among this group, especially in settings like Malaysia, where same-sex sexual behavior is illegal. METHODS: A sample of 355 participants completed an online survey between June and July 2020, recruited through geosocial networking apps for MSM and social networking websites (e.g. Facebook). We used descriptive and multivariable analyses to examine correlates of PrEP use within this pop

Lonely hearts and angry minds: Online dating rejection increases male (but not female) hostility.

The present work explores the hostile tendencies elicited by romantic rejection in the increasingly common context of online dating. To empirically investigate this issue, we created an ad hoc online dating platform in which fictitious online dating partners romantically rejected heterosexual male and female participants. Results revealed that male-but not female-participants who were rejected by desired dating partners displayed increased hostility. This pattern of findings was consistent across different measures, which considered both aggressive tendencies against the rejecting partners and

Improving adherence to web-based cessation programs: a randomized controlled trial study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Reducing smoking prevalence is a public health priority that can save more lives and money than almost any other known preventive intervention. Internet interventions have the potential for enormous public health impact given their broad reach and effectiveness. However, most users engage only minimally with even the best designed websites, diminishing their impact due to an insufficient 'dose'. Two approaches to improve adherence to Internet cessation programs are integrating smokers into an online social network and providing free nicotine replacement therapy (NRT). Active partic

The Differential Effects of Public and Private Active Social Media Use on Adolescents' Well-Being: Insights from a Cross-Sectional and Experimental Study.

While existing research on active social media use and well-being has yielded inconsistent findings, this study introduces a refined typology distinguishing between public (e.g., posting broadly on social networks) and private (e.g., one-on-one messaging) active use to clarify these effects. It further examines the moderating role of perceived online social support. Study 1 (N = 689) used a cross-sectional survey design to analyze the relationships among public versus private active social media use, perceived online social support, and well-being in a population of Chinese adolescents. The event-driven nature of online political hostility: How offline political events make online interactions more hostile.

Hostile interactions permeate political debates on social media, but what is driving the long-term developments in online political hostility? Prior research focuses on individual-level factors such as the dispositions of users or network-level factors such as echo chambers. Moving beyond these accounts, we develop and test an event-oriented explanation and demonstrate that over the course of the 2020 election year in the United States, all major shifts in political hostility on the social media platform Twitter were driven by external offline events. Importantly, these events were magnified b

Social support and online interaction and their links to psychosocial well-being among Nordic adolescents: Integrating variable-centered and person-centered approaches.

The Nordic countries are among the most digitally advanced societies in the world. Past research suggests that both social support offline and interaction online are linked to adolescent psychological adjustment. However, less is known regarding the complex implications of distinctive sources of social support offline and online interaction for a broader range of indices of adolescent psychosocial well-being, including its contemporary forms such as social media addiction. This study utilized two methodological approaches to examine the social components and determinants of psychosocial well-b

Mesoscale structures in signed networks.

Mesoscale structures in signed networks have been studied under the limiting assumption of the validity of social balance theory, which predicts positive connections within groups and negative connections between groups. Here, we propose and apply a methodology that overcomes this limitation and is able to find and characterize also the different possible unbalanced structures in signed networks. Applying our methodology to 24 empirical networks, from social-political, financial, and biological domains, we find that unbalanced mesoscale structures are prevalent in real-world networks, includin

A Customized Social Network Platform (Kids Helpline Circles) for Delivering Group Counseling to Young People Experiencing Family Discord That Impacts Their Well-Being: Exploratory Study.

BACKGROUND: It has often been reported that young people are at high risk of mental health concerns, more so than at any other time in development over their life span. The situational factors that young people report as impacting their well-being are not addressed as often: specifically, family discord. Kids Helpline, a national service in Australia that provides free counseling online and by telephone to young people in distress, report that family discord and well-being issues are one of the major concerns reported by clients. In order to meet the preferences that young people seek when acc

Video calls for reducing social isolation and loneliness in older people: a rapid review.

BACKGROUND: The current COVID-19 pandemic has been identified as a possible trigger for increases in loneliness and social isolation among older people due to the restrictions on movement that many countries have put in place. Loneliness and social isolation are consistently identified as risk factors for poor mental and physical health in older people. Video calls may help older people stay connected during the current crisis by widening the participant's social circle or by increasing the frequency of contact with existing acquaintances. OBJECTIVES: The primary objective of this rapid revie

HIV Testing, Social Capital, and Mental Health Access Among Foreign-Born Men Who Have Sex with Men (MSM) in Japan.

BACKGROUND: Migration and place of birth are increasingly recognised as social determinants of health among sexual minority populations. Among men who have sex with men (MSM), being born outside the country of residence may shape access to healthcare, community resources, and social capital networks. In Japan, however, little is known about how being born outside Japan is associated with social capital, health behaviours, and mental health among MSM. METHODS: Data were drawn from a large cross-sectional online survey conducted in 2025 of 8150 MSM living in Japan, recruited via community-based
