OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of condylar degeneration in patients with anterior open bites (AOB).
STUDY DESIGN: Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans of 194 patients with AOB (108 with skeletal open bites and 86 with dental open bites) and 100 patients serving as controls were included in this retrospective study. Two oral and maxillofacial radiologists categorized each of the 588 condyles as normal, degenerative-active, or degenerative-repair. The χ2 analysis with Bonferroni adjustment was used to evaluate the relationship of condylar status (n

This case report describes the treatment of a 25-year-old woman with a severe open bite. This patient presented a grade Ⅲ open bite, considerably thin alveolar bone, and evident labial buccal and lingual root form. The open bite was corrected by fixed orthodontic treatment and masticatory exercises. However, the increased pressure in the labial muscle caused by lip muscle exercise suppressed the canines, which resulted in the protrusion of the apices of canine roots out of the alveolar bone. Afterward, HX brackets, instead of self-locking, were used and bonded reversely in the occlusal-gingiva

A 45-year-old woman presented with an anterior open-bite complaining chiefly of her unpleasant smile esthetics and masticatory and speech problems. Treatment included speech therapy initiated immediately after bonding. Lingual spurs were positioned on the mandibular incisors in order to help tongue rehabilitation. During the working phase, temporary anchorage devices (TADs) were used at the mandibular anterior segment to intrude the lower left premolars. A splint was used to ensure retention in the upper and lower arches; an enveloppe linguale nocturne (ELN) was provided. Non-surgical open-bit

Noonan syndrome, characterized by short stature, facial anomalies, and congenital heart defects, may also be associated with hematopoietic disorders. Craniofacial anomalies in affected patients include hypertelorism and severe open bite associated with masticatory dysfunction. We treated a Noonan syndrome patient with a skeletal open bite. Surgical orthodontic treatment including two-jaw surgery established a good occlusal relationship after correction of severe anemia. Both upper and lower incisors were moved to upright positions, while clockwise rotation of the palatal plane and decreased ma

UNLABELLED: Open bite is related to various etiological factors and, in many cases, is difficult to diagnose. The present study is aimed at evaluating, through cephalometric analysis, the dimensions of the upper airways and dentoalveolar heights in open bite (OB) patients versus normal overbite patients. The relationship between the width of the upper airways and the lack of overbite is also studied, in order to differentiate between dental open bite (DOB) and skeletal open bite (SOB).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighty X-rays were selected from files of orthodontic patients to form the control sa

A 15.3-year-old white girl with a skeletal Class III malocclusion and a severe lateral open bite was treated with conventional orthodontics and directional force mechanics and elastics. She had 5 congenitally missing premolars. The maxillary right canine was ectopically erupted and in contact with the maxillary right first molar. An Angle Class I molar relationship was achieved with canine protected occlusion and incisal guidance. A wrap-around retainer was placed on the maxillary arch and a lingual bonded retainer on the mandibular arch. Treatment time was 38 months.

The following cases describe three sisters with anterior open bite (overbite between 0 and -4.5 mm) coinciding with vertical growth pattern. All patients showed tongue thrusting and tongue-tip protrusion. They underwent functional appliance and fixed straight-wire appliance therapy primarily. Bite closure was effected by premolar extraction. Orthodontic treatment was supported by speech therapy. All cases resulted in a stable Class I molar relationship with an overbite of 2 mm. The results remained stable 6-8 years after the end of treatment. Speech and tongue function were physiological.

OBJECTIVES: Acquired anterior open bites were reported as the consequence of condylar collapse, which was associated with inflammatory TMJ disorders. However, we have seen such malocclusion patients whose condylar changes seemed to be related to TMJ degeneration associated with internal derangement. The aims of this study were to review the clinical history and to study the TMJ MRI of these patients.
STUDY DESIGN: TMJ MRIs of patients, who had presented acquired anterior open bite at first visit, were retrieved from the image database for the analysis. Clinical histories focused on internal d

The purpose of this study was to use cineradiographic images to investigate tongue movement during deglutition in anterior open bite patients with tongue thrust. Each subject had semi-spherical lead markers attached to the tip and dorsal surface of the tongue and was asked to swallow 5 ml of diluted liquid barium. Tongue movement during deglutition was recorded in the mid-sagittal plane with an X-ray VTR system. The deglutition process was divided into 6 stages to analyze the movements of the tip and dorsal surface of the tongue in each stage. In open bite patients, both the tip and dorsum of

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of the vertical chincap on mandibular morphology and also on the dentoalveolar structures in patients with high-angle open-bite malocclusions. We examined 35 children with high-angle skeletal Class I or II open-bite malocclusions. Eighteen subjects were selected as the treatment group, and 17 were the controls. Vertical chincaps, applying 400 g on each side from beneath the anterior part of the mandibular corpus in an upward direction, were used in the treatment group for 16 hours per day over a mean period of 9 months. We studied 70 lateral

BACKGROUND: Anterior open bite (AOB) affects 16.5% of children aged 2-16 years, significantly impacting dental occlusion and oral function. Among various contributing factors, improper tongue posture has been implicated. This study aims to assess neuronal cortical activation differences in children with AOB compared to those without, focusing on rest, speech and swallowing disorders.
OBJECTIVE: To compare the prevalence of articulation disorders, swallowing occurrences, tongue rate of motion ratio, and brain activation patterns at rest and during deglutition and phonation in children with and

The most prevalent oral habit and one of the most often habitual behavioral patterns in preschool-aged children is thumb-sucking. This behavior is crucial to the development of malocclusion and must be addressed carefully since it may cause a secondary tongue thrust that worsens the issue. Developing an effective treatment plan requires determining the underlying cause, which may include psychological, physiological, and or anatomical factors. Overall prevention of behavior needs to be planned for successful outcomes. One such device for treating tongue-thrusting and thumb-sucking habits is th

BACKGROUND: Skeletal anterior open bite (SAOB) represents one of the most complex and challenging malocclusions in orthodontics. Orthodontic treatment supported by miniplates enable to reduce the need for orthognathic surgery. Transverse dimension may be affected by intrusion biomechanics. This study aims to assess transverse bone alterations in patients with SAOB who underwent orthodontic treatment with absolute anchorage using four miniplates.
METHODS: A total of 32 patients of both sexes, with an average age of 33.8 years, diagnosed with SAOB and treated orthodontically with four miniplate
