BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Brinzolamide is a new topical carbonic anhydrase inhibitor for intraocular pressure (IOP) control. It has high inhibitory activity against human carbonic anhydrase II, which is the key isoenzyme regulating aqueous humor production. We conducted this study to compare the ocular hypotensive effect and safety of 1% brinzolamide versus that of 0.5% timolol twice daily.
METHODS: In a double-masked design, 50 open angle glaucoma patients who had a baseline IOP between 20 to 30 mm Hg were randomized to receive either 1% brinzolamide ophthalmic solution or 0.5% timolol twice d

Although a mild silver protein solution (Argyrol) has been used for a number of years and is still used by many ophthalmic surgeons, its efficiency as an antibacterial agent on the conjunctiva has not been scientifically evaluated as part of the preoperative chemical preparation of the eye. We studied the effectiveness of a mild silver protein solution on the conjunctival flora of 32 patients in a masked fashion. By bacteriologic analysis, the mild silver protein solution was found to be no more effective in reducing the number of species and colonies in the treated eye than in the untreated e

Gentamicin sulfate and betamethasone phosphate were combined in solution form for topical ophthalmic use in patients with chronic staphylococcal blepharoconjunctivitis. The study involved 79 patients and was a two-week double-blind placebo controlled trial comparing the combination with its individual components and placebo. Lid cultures showed that the combination and gentamicin were significantly superior to placebo or betamethasone in freeing the lids of staphylococcus. In addition, the patients treated with either the combination or betamethasone showed greater improvement in the total obj

A 0.04% mitomycin C (MMC) ophthalmic solution is not commercially available and is prepared in hospitals as required. The physical properties and stability of the MMC ophthalmic solution have not been clarified because of a lack of data. This study aimed to assess the stability of the MMC ophthalmic solution under various storage conditions. The MMC ophthalmic solution was prepared by dissolving 2 mg of MMC in 5 mL of saline solution. Each batch of ophthalmic solution was stored under three conditions [cold/shaded light, room temperature/shaded light, and room temperature/scattered light (appr

In recent years, there has been a great interest in the potential use of contact lenses as eye drug delivery systems. Static (individual layers of the cornea, sclera and retina) as well as dynamic barriers (blood flow) pose a serious challenge to the effective delivery of the drug substance to the eyeball. The current ophthalmic systems are not optimal for patients, especially in the form of eye drops, where almost 95% of the drug contained in them is lost through the process of absorption through the conjunctiva or tear drainage. This article describes in vitro experiments that examined the u

Bacterial conjunctivitis is a leading cause of ocular infections requiring short-term therapeutic treatment with frequent administration of drugs on daily basis. Topical dosage forms available in the market for the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis such as simple drug solutions and suspensions are rapidly eliminated from the precorneal space upon instillation due to tear turn over and nasolacrimal drainage, limiting intraocular bioavailability of drug to less than 10% of the administered dose. To overcome issues related to conventional drop, an effort was made to design and evaluate prolon

Glaucoma is a progressive, neurodegenerative optic nerve disease that can cause significant visual morbidity and affects over 60 million people worldwide. The only known modifiable risk factor for glaucoma at this time is elevated intraocular pressure (IOP), which may be treated with medications, laser therapy, and/or incisional surgery. Topical ocular medications are commonly used as first-line therapy for glaucoma, although side effects may limit their use. Unoprostone is a novel 22-carbon ocular hypotensive agent that may be advantageous in treating some patients with open angle glaucoma or

In December 2008, bimatoprost ophthalmic solution 0.03% was approved in the United States for the treatment of hypotrichosis of the eyelashes. Since then, there have been several reports in the literature on the off-label use of bimatoprost ophthalmic solution 0.03% for the treatment of thinning in other hair bearing areas, such as in the eyebrows and in the scalp. Herein, a prospective pilot study is presented in which bimatoprost ophthalmic solution 0.03% is evaluated for helping to re-grow hair in the eyebrow region of ten female patients.
