Photonic skyrmions and merons are topological quasiparticles characterized by nontrivial electromagnetic textures, which have received increasing research attention recently, providing novel degree of freedom to manipulate light-matter interactions and exhibiting excellent potential in deep-subwavelength imaging and nanometrology. Here, the topological stability of photonic spin meron lattices, which indicates the invariance of skyrmion number and robustness of spin texture under a continuous deformation of the field configuration, is demonstrated by inducing a perturbation to break the C4 sym

Breaking electromagnetic reciprocity enables directional control of light and is essential for both classical and quantum photonic systems. However, realizing integrated optical nonreciprocity that simultaneously combines low loss, broad bandwidth, and compatibility with quantum states of light remains a major challenge. Here, we demonstrate optical nonreciprocity based on quantum frequency conversion in an integrated [Formula: see text] nonlinear waveguide. Operating from classical power levels down to the single-photon level, the device preserves quantum coherence and entanglement of the inp

To address the urgent need for multi-channel high-speed electrical interfacing of thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) photonic circuits, we realize a flip-chip packaging platform capable of simultaneously delivering 13 high-speed and 32 low-speed electronic signals to a centimeter-sized TFLN chip. The platform exhibits low flip-chip bonding loss and low inter-channel crosstalk over a broad bandwidth up to 50 GHz. Leveraging this packaging platform, we demonstrate high-speed electrical interfacing with two proof-of-concept TFLN photonic circuits, namely a 2 × 8 optical switch and an electro-optic

In recent years, two-dimensional (2D) niobium oxide dihalides (e.g., NbOI2) have garnered significant research interest in nonlinear photonics due to their prominent second-order nonlinear optical properties. Integrating these materials with high-quality-factor optical microcavities represents a crucial approach for developing high-performance on-chip nonlinear optical devices. This work demonstrates NbOI2-integrated silicon nitride (Si3N4) microdisk resonators that achieve second-harmonic generation under low-power (sub-milliwatt) continuous-wave laser pumping, leveraging the superior second-

A cavity quantum electrodynamics system consisting of a confined single photon and a single quantum emitter serves as a fundamental block for quantum optics and photonic quantum technologies. The canonical optical mode used in the conventional cavity quantum electrodynamics features a uniform polarization distribution, leading to the scalar light-matter interaction in most existing experiments. Despite the rapid progress in the generation of structured light with spatially varied polarizations, the structured light-matter interaction, especially at the single-quanta level, is highly intriguing

We propose an all-optical Moiré-like exciton confinement by means of spatially periodic optical cavities. Such periodic photonic structures can control the material properties by coupling the matter excitations to the confined photons and their quantum fluctuations. We develop a low energy non-perturbative quantum electro-dynamical description of strongly coupled excitons and photons at finite momentum transfer. We find that in the classical limit of a laser driven cavity the induced optical confinement directly emulates Moiré physics. In a dark cavity instead, the sole presence of quantum flu

An advanced type of diffractive optical element is presented that combines the concept of the photon sieve with an off-axis, off-normal incidence reflection geometry. Compared to transmission optical elements, the signal-to-background ratio is significantly increased by separating the first from other diffraction orders without drastically reducing the size of the smallest diffractive element. The reflection photon sieve produces sharp foci at maximum contrast and offers the advantages of effective heat dissipation and a large working space above the focal plane. Experimental results for a dev

An optical vortex beam has attracted significant attention across diverse applications, including optical manipulation, phase-contrast microscopy, optical communication, and quantum photonics. To utilize vortex generators for integrated photonics, researchers have developed ultra-compact vortex generators using fork gratings, metasurfaces, and integrated microcombs. However, those devices depend on costly, time-consuming nanofabrication and are constrained by the low signal-to-noise ratio due to the fabrication error. As an alternative maneuver, spin-orbit coupling has emerged as a method to o

In this work, we present the design of a prototype fluid analyzer based on photon sieves, permeable diffractive optical elements capable of focusing light through diffraction. The photon sieve comprises a spatial distribution of circular apertures patterned onto an aluminum substrate, which provides intrinsic fluid permeability and functions as either a lens or a mirror. In our approach, the aluminum surface is chemically functionalized to detect a specific biomolecular marker-human serum albumin-whose interaction with the surface induces measurable changes in the spectral reflectance. Practical applications implementing integrated photonic circuits can benefit from nonlinear optical functionalities such as wavelength conversion, all-optical signal processing, and frequency-comb generation, among others. Numerous nonlinear waveguide platforms have been explored for these roles; the group of materials capable of combining both passive and active functionalities monolithically on the same chip is III-V semiconductors. AlGaAs is the most studied III-V nonlinear waveguide platform to date; it exhibits both second- and third-order optical nonlinearity and can be used for a wide r

Photonic crystals regulate light propagation through their periodic structures and generate vivid structural color, making them highly attractive for sensing, anti-counterfeiting, and detection applications. However, self-assembled photonic crystals are inherently fragile, and their periodic structures are readily disrupted under liquid immersion or mechanical disturbance, leading to attenuation or even complete loss of structural color. This instability severely limits their practical application in complex environments. Herein, polyurethane was modified with a toughening resin and processed

Optical nanofibers provide a versatile platform for exploring strong light-matter interactions at the single-quantum level, a central goal of quantum optics. Their subwavelength diameter supports tightly confined guided modes with strong evanescent fields, enabling efficient coupling between photons and nearby atoms. By incorporating fiber Bragg gratings, nanofibers can form fully fiber-integrated high-finesse cavities, combining strong atom-photon coupling with efficient and low-loss optical input-output interfacing in the setting of cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED). In parallel, nanofibe

The spin-orbit interaction of light is a fundamental manifestation of controlling its angular momenta with numerous applications in photonic spin Hall effects and chiral quantum optics. However, observation of an optical spin Hall effect, which is normally very weak with subwavelength displacements, needs quantum weak measurements or sophisticated metasurfaces. Here, we theoretically and experimentally demonstrate the spin-orbit interaction of light in the form of strong chiroptical responses by breaking the in-plane inversion symmetry of a dielectric substrate. The chiroptical signal is obser

Two-dimensional (2D) materials are extensively used in almost all scientific research areas, from fundamental research to applications. Initially, 2D materials were integrated with conventional non-2D materials having well-established manufacturing methods. Recently, the concept of constructing photonic devices exclusively from 2D materials has emerged. Various devices developed to date have been demonstrated based on monolithic or hetero 2D materials. In this review, photonic devices that solely consist of 2D materials are introduced, including photonic waveguides, lenses, and optical cavitie

Proton beam therapy (PBT) is increasingly used to treat cancers, especially in the paediatric and adolescent and young adult (AYA) population. As PBT becomes more accessible, determining when PBT should be used instead of photon irradiation can be difficult. There is a need to balance patient, tumour and treatment factors when making this decision. Comparing the dosimetry between these two modalities plays an important role in this process. PBT can reduce low to intermediate doses to organs at risk (OAR), but photon irradiation has its dosimetric advantages. We present two cases with brain tum

Semiconductor superlattice micro-/nanowires could greatly increase the versatility and power of modulating electronic (or excitonic, photonic) transport, optical properties. In this communication, we report growth of a semiconductor CdS/CdS:SnS(2) superlattice microwire through a coevaporation technique with microenvironmental control. Such a novel superlattice microwire can modulate the exciton and photons to show multipeak emissions with periods in a wide spectral range, which arise in the 1-d photon crystal and confined exciton emission. This system can be widely used in producing multicolo

Activation of caged fluorophores in microscopy has mostly relied on the absorption of a single ultraviolet (UV) photon of ≲400 nm wavelength or on the simultaneous absorption of two near-infrared (NIR) photons >700 nm. Here, we show that two green photons (515 nm) can substitute for a single photon (~260 nm) to activate popular silicon-rhodamine (Si-R) dyes. Activation in the green range eliminates the chromatic aberrations that plague activation by UV or NIR light. Thus, in confocal fluorescence microscopy, the activation focal volume can be matched with that of confocal detection. Besides, d

We design schemes to generate and distribute hybrid entanglement and hyperentanglement correlated with degrees of freedom (polarization and time-bin) via weak cross-Kerr nonlinearities (XKNLs) and linear optical devices (including time-bin encoders). In our scheme, the multi-photon gates (which consist of XKNLs, quantum bus [qubus] beams, and photon-number-resolving [PNR] measurement) with time-bin encoders can generate hyperentanglement or hybrid entanglement. And we can also purify the entangled state (polarization) of two photons using only linear optical devices and time-bin encoders under

The rediscovery of van der Waals magnets has revitalized research into intrinsic two-dimensional magnetism and motivated unconventional strategies, such as electrostatic gating and strain, to switch magnetic states. Photon-driven magnetization switching, however, remains largely unexplored but holds promise for fast, high-density, and energy-efficient spintronic applications. Here, we show that the itinerant van der Waals ferromagnet Fe₃GeTe₂ exhibits tunable magnetism under optical pulsed excitation, with the response governed by photon energy, fluence, and polarization. This is evident from
