Ophthalmic & physiological optics : the journal of the British College of Ophthalmic Opticians (Optometrists)2023eng
PURPOSE: To survey paediatric eye care providers to identify current patterns of prescribing for hyperopia.
METHODS: Paediatric eye care providers were invited, via email, to participate in a survey to evaluate current age-based refractive error prescribing practices. Questions were designed to determine which factors may influence the survey participant's prescribing pattern (e.g., patient's age, magnitude of hyperopia, patient's symptoms, heterophoria and stereopsis) and if the providers were to prescribe, how much hyperopic correction would they prescribe (e.g., full or partial prescriptio

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to compare the self-reported clinical practice behaviours of optometrists in Australia and the United Kingdom (UK) with respect to the diagnosis and management of dry eye disease (DED). We also sought to examine whether the reported practices of clinicians in each region were consistent with current evidence-based recommendations for DED.
METHODS: An online survey was distributed to optometrists (Australia, n = 654; UK, n = 1006). Respondents provided information about practice modality, years of optometric experience, preferred diagnostic and management str

Demonstrating that optometrists can make valid and reliable assessments of optic disc features is an important prerequisite for establishing schemes for shared care/co-management. Previous studies have estimated observer variability among experts in the assessment of optic disc cupping, but there has been a paucity of information on observer variability amongst optometrists. This paper describes a study to investigate intra- and inter-observer variability for a range of disc features, as graded by both ophthalmologists and optometrists. Five observers (three optometrists and two ophthalmologis

BACKGROUND: Optometrists frequently examine patients with the signs and symptoms of carotid artery disease. Referral for appropriate testing is mandatory in such patients.
METHODS: A review of the noninvasive tests which an optometrist can perform in the office is presented. The paper also describes the noninvasive tests which are performed in vascular clinics on patients in whom carotid atherosclerosis is to be ruled out. Arteriography, both conventional and digital subtraction studies, is also described.
RESULTS: A discussion of the appropriate medical and surgical treatment of patients wi

There is increasing focus on the value of real-world clinical registry data in multiple medical disciplines, including ophthalmology. However, disease-focused clinical registries that engage optometrists are rare. This paper introduces the Optometry Module of the Save Sight Keratoconus Registry (SSKR) and highlights the potential advantages it can offer to optometrists for improving their quality of patient care and for engaging in research. Optometrists are primary eye care providers and have a major role in providing clinical care to people with keratoconus. The SSKR system has been develope

Data from a national survey were used to explore the position of ophthalmologists, general practitioners, orthoptists, optometrists and opticians in the domain of vision care services. Options for organising the gatekeeper function were analysed. This was done on the basis of six cases that the five key occupations considered as their overlapping areas. Nearly all respondents reported to be consulted by patients with the given complaints, indicating rather unclear boundaries between the professions. Further, the opinions indicated preference for a medical gatekeeper (ophthalmologist, GP) rathe

BACKGROUND: Migraine is underdiagnosed and undertreated. Optometrists are primary eye care providers, who regularly encounter people with migraine as an incidental finding during routine eye examinations, or when patients present to rule out whether visual or ocular problems are contributing to headache symptoms. Knowledge and use of a migraine screening tool in optometric practice is, therefore, important to be able to identify and refer people with migraine for appropriate management.
OBJECTIVE: We sought to investigate optometrists' current behaviors regarding screening for migraine, and t

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Effective paediatric eyecare requires up-to-date knowledge and skills. Effective tele-mentoring and continuous education can significantly improve clinical confidence and ensure comprehensive care for paediatric patients.
BACKGROUND: Project ECHO (Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes) is a proven interactive case-based tele-mentoring for medical practitioners. A Paediatric Eyecare ECHO was implemented with Australian optometrists to evaluate its acceptability as an education modality and impact on self-reported confidence in clinical knowledge and competency.

OBJECTIVE: Surgeons and other physicians have reported occupational musculoskeletal (MSK) pain, and it has been recently raised as a growing issue by ophthalmologists and optometrists. What is most concerning is that it could be a serious threat to career longevity and performance. MSK pain and injury in Canadian ophthalmologists has not been quantified. Our goal was to estimate the prevalence of MSK issues, to determine the impact of MSK injuries to working hours and health, and to ascertain physician characteristics and practice patterns associated with MSK problems.
DESIGN: Survey.

PURPOSE: The increasing demand for primary eye care due to an aging population implicates an enhanced role of optometrists in the communities. The primary objective of this study was to investigate the rate of referrals and returning medical reports between optometrists and health care professionals in Norway. The secondary objectives were to investigate the conformity of diagnoses in referrals and medical reports, the extent of optometric follow-up examinations and the use of ophthalmic diagnostic drugs in optometric practice.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study is an ongoing prospective elect

BACKGROUND: Defining the threshold for therapeutic and surgical intervention in patients with keratoconus presents a considerable challenge given the lack of clear, evidence-based data. Little is known about the patterns of practice and referral criteria of optometrists within Australia.
METHODS: All members of the NSW branch of Optometrist Association Australia were invited to complete an online survey in January 2013. This survey was designed to elicit practice information regarding the evaluation and therapeutic treatment of patients with keratoconus in the optometric setting.

PURPOSE: To determine the use of eye care services by type of provider (ophthalmologist, optometrist, and non-ophthalmologist physician) in the Medicare population.
METHODS: As a basis for characterizing eye conditions and ophthalmic services among a population 65 years of age and older, 1991 claims from a representative 5% sample of Medicare beneficiaries were analyzed using a previously described classification scheme. Analysis was specifically conducted by type of provider as well as by the service provided.
RESULTS: Almost one half of the approximately 30 million Medicare beneficiaries 6

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: As the prevalence of cataracts continues to rise, the increasing demand for cataract surgery may surpass the availability of ophthalmologists. This review examines the role of optometry in the co-management of patients with cataracts, including preoperative and postoperative care, and discusses the implications of expanding optometric scope-of-practice laws.
RECENT FINDINGS: Collaboration between optometrists and ophthalmologists occurs through two primary models: referral-based and integrated management. Studies indicate that direct referrals from optometrists to ophthalmo

PURPOSE: This research investigated the reported optometric prescribing criteria of Israeli optometrists.
METHODS: An online questionnaire based on previous studies was distributed via email and social networking sites to optometrists in Israel. The questionnaire surveyed the level of refractive error at which respondents would prescribe for different types of refractive error at various ages with and without symptoms.
RESULTS: 124 responses were obtained, yielding a response rate of approximately 12-22%, 92% of whom had trained in Israel. For all refractive errors, the presence of symptoms

Intracranial tumors affecting the visual system are a source of malpractice claims involving optometrists. Signs and symptoms of disease, such as papilledema, optic atrophy, decreased visual acuity, headache, loss of visual field, acute onset incomitant strabismus, and gradually worsening coordination, should prompt optometrists to rule out the possibility of an underlying intracranial lesion. Appropriate optometric and medical evaluation should be provided. Co-management of care with other health care practitioners should be scrupulously coordinated and documented.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: With a paradigm shift in geographic atrophy (GA) treatments now available, establishing consensus on the identification and diagnosis of the disease along with considerations for management of patients with GA will assist eye care professionals (ECP) in their day-to-day practices, leading to improved patient outcomes.
METHODS: A modified Delphi panel process (Geographic Atrophy Management Consensus) consisting of three total surveys and one virtual live meeting held between survey 2 and survey 3. Data were collected from July to October 2022. Participants included expert memb

PURPOSE: To assess the feasibility of a novel method for simulating a Rigid Gas Permeable Contact Lenses (RGP-CL) fitting using 3-D printed sclero-corneal surfaces (SCSs).
METHODS: The experiment involved the fabrication of two resin SCSs with biconic corneal geometry and the participation of 22 optician-optometrists as observers. Participants compared the fluorescein patterns of three RGP-CL fitted on each SCS with theoretical patterns generated through computer simulation. To standardize visualization, comparisons were conducted through a multiple-choice questionnaire composed of 6 question

BACKGROUND: There are a number of limitations to the present primary eye care system in the UK. Patients with minor eye conditions typically either have to present to their local hospital or GP, or face a charge when visiting eye care professionals (optometrists). Some areas of the UK have commissioned enhanced community services to alleviate this problem; however, many areas have not. The present study is a needs assessment of three areas (Leeds, Airedale and Bradford) without a Minor Eye Conditions Service (MECS), with the aim of determining whether such a service is clinically or economical

PURPOSE: This study explored the attitudes and prescribing behaviours of UK eyecare practitioners (ECPs) toward fitting contact lenses (CLs) for patients under 18, and whether these have been influenced by the growing availability of myopia control options.
METHODS: An online survey was conducted in 2023 with UK-based optometrists and contact lens opticians (CLOs). It examined minimum fitting ages for different CL types, key decision-making factors when prescribing for paediatrics, and changes in practitioners' willingness to fit CLs for children. Comparisons were made to a prior iteration of

BackgroundPeople living with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias experience barriers to accessing routine primary eyecare, increasing risk of preventable sight loss. One barrier is a negative experience with previous eye tests (defined as a comprehensive eye examination involving multiple tests to assess visual function and eye health). We explored eye test experiences for people with dementia and identified improvements. Supporting people with dementia to keep up regular eye tests may reduce risk of preventable sight loss, thereby supporting wellbeing and independence.ObjectiveFrom the
