Dental status and oral hygiene in patients with head and neck cancer.

Poor oral hygiene is believed to play a role as a risk factor for head and neck cancer, especially for oral cancer. Only few epidemiologic data exist about dental status and oral hygiene in these patients. We performed a case-control study involving 100 patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the upper aerodigestive tract and 214 age- and sex-matched control subjects with no known tumorous disease. In the tumor patients, oral hygiene and dental status proved to be significantly worse: the majority of the tumor patients seldom or never brushed their teeth and the frequency of dental visits was

The effects of improved oral hygiene on taste perception and nutrition of the elderly.

An experimental group of 12 elderly institutionalized subjects received professional oral hygiene therapy three times weekly for 5 weeks while a control group of 11 received only placebo treatment. The experimental group responded with significantly improved ability to detect sweet and salty tastes but not sour or bitter tastes. No change in taste perception was observed in the controls. Initially, nutrient intake of both groups was suboptimal, especially for folacin. After the treatment period, the intake of calories, hematocrits, hemoglobins, and plasma ascorbic acid concentrations of both g

Oral hygiene behavior and toothbrushing skills: results of the 6th German Oral Health Study (DMS • 6).

OBJECTIVES: Past German Oral Health Studies (DMS) have revealed that toothbrushing patterns - a behavioral index comprising toothbrushing frequency, duration and timing - have steadily improved over the previous decades. What has not yet been investigated, however, are toothbrushing skills, ie, the ability to achieve oral cleanliness by removing all plaque deposits. METHOD AND MATERIALS: All participants of the DMS • 6 from the age groups of 12-year-olds, 35- to 44-year-olds, and 65- to 74-year-olds were asked to brush their teeth to the best of their ability. To do so, they used their own de

Smoking or poor oral hygiene do not predispose to peritonsillar abscesses via changes in oral flora.

Aim: The purpose of this prospective study was to determine if there is a difference in number and distribution of salivary bacteria between patients with tonsillar infection and healthy volunteers. Background: The etiology of peritonsillar abscess (PTA) is unclear. Smoking, periodontal disease, and infection of minor salivary glands have been suggested as predisposing factors for PTA. Material and methods: Patients with acute tonsillitis (AT) (n = 54), peritonsillitis (PT) (n = 36), PTA (n = 58), and healthy volunteers (n = 52) were prospectively recruited and evaluated. Saliva bacteria were

Associations of sex, oral hygiene and smoking with oral species in distinct habitats at age 32 years.

The oral microbiome is ecologically diverse, complex, dynamic, and little understood. We describe the microbiota of four oral habitats in a birth cohort at age 32 and examine differences by sex, oral hygiene, and current smoking status, dental caries, and periodontal health. Oral biofilm samples collected from anterior labial supragingival, posterior lingual supragingival, subgingival, and tongue sites of 841 Dunedin Multidisciplinary Health and Development Study members were analysed using checkerboard DNA-DNA hybridization; focusing on 30 ecologically important bacterial species. The four ha

Effect of oral hygiene instruction and scaling on oral malodour in a population of Turkish children with gingival inflammation.

AIM: Oral malodour affects a large proportion of the population, and may cause a significant social or psychological handicap to those suffering from it. The condition has a positive correlation with the accumulation of bacterial plaque in the oral cavity. The aim of the present study was twofold: first, to determine whether oral malodour and periodontal disease parameters are associated with one another in 150 Turkish subjects (mean age +/- SD = 9.1 +/- 2.7 years; age range = 7-12 years); and secondly, to investigate the impact of oral hygiene instruction and scaling on oral malodour. Link between caries, periodontitis, and pregnancy: The role of personalized oral hygiene.

Optimal health during pregnancy is crucial for ensuring the well-being of the mother and the developing fetus. This article is focused on the impact of oral health and the role of personalized oral hygiene management in addressing prevalent dental issues among pregnant women, with particular emphasis on periodontal disease and dental caries. Despite the high prevalence of these dental problems and their association with obstetric complications such as pre-term birth and low birth weight, many pregnant women do not receive adequate dental care. This gap in care is often due to misconceptions ab

Knowledge and practice on oral hygiene maintenance among medical students in India.

Oral hygiene is vital in preventing dental caries, periodontal diseases and systemic conditions like stroke and heart disease. Therefore, it is of interest to evaluate oral health awareness among MBBS students and interns using a pretested, structured questionnaire. Data analysis was performed using the Chi-square test with a significance threshold of 0.05. A significant gender difference was observed in brushing frequency (P = 0.005) and only 36.9% of students reported brushing twice daily. Hence, there is a need to enhance oral health education in medical curricula for effective preventive h

Potential Relationship between Poor Oral Hygiene and MRONJ: An Observational Retrospective Study.

Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is a drug-related side effect linked but not limited to antiresorptive and antiangiogenic molecules. It recognizes several triggers in dental procedures, such as surgery, endodontic treatments, and root planing, but also prosthesis decubitus or with a spontaneous onset. Although there are many reports about the onset of this pathology, oral hygiene status is mainly described as a consequence of MRONJ. Not so much is known about the oral hygiene situation as a concurrent factor in the pathogenesis of severe stages and about non-surgical period
