To combat an increasing abundance of sucking insect pests, >40 pesticides are currently recommended and frequently used as foliar sprays on row crops, especially cotton. Foraging honey bees may be killed when they are directly exposed to foliar sprays, or they may take contaminated pollen back to hives that maybe toxic to other adult bees and larvae. To assess acute toxicity against the honey bee, we used a modified spray tower to simulate field spray conditions to include direct whole-body exposure, inhalation, and continuing tarsal contact and oral licking after a field spray. A total of 42

BACKGROUND: Topical intranasal corticosteroid sprays are a mainstay of treatment for nasal polyposis. Newer treatment strategies for refractory polypoid disease include "off label" topical steroids such as prednisolone acetate. This study investigates the safety of intranasal prednisolone acetate; evaluating its effect on serum cortisol and adrenocorticotropin hormone (ACTH) levels.
METHODS: This retrospective study included adult patients with refractory nasal polyposis, who had not taken oral steroids for 3 months prior to entry into the study. Patients applied 2 sprays of 1% prednisolone a

BACKGROUND: A key issue in pulmonary drug delivery is improvement of the delivery device for effective and targeted treatment. Pressurized metered dose inhalers (pMDIs) are the most popular aerosol therapy device for treating lung diseases. This article studies the effect of spray characteristics: injection velocity, spray cone angle, particle size distribution (PSD), and its mass median aerodynamic diameter (MMAD) on drug delivery.
METHODS: An idealized oral airway geometry, extending from mouth to the main bronchus, was connected to a pMDI device. Inhalation flow rates of 15, 30, and 60 L/m

BACKGROUND: Bacterial pyoderma is a frequent presentation in dogs. Despite the widespread availability of effective systemic and topical antimicrobial products, good clinical practice currently recommends avoidance of long-term use to mitigate the development of bacterial resistance.
HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the speed of resolution of clinical signs of bacterial pyoderma in dogs treated with a systemic antimicrobial agent with or without the use of an adjunctive spray with antimicrobial properties.
ANIMALS: Twelve dogs with superficial bacterial pyoderma.
METHODS: In this controll

Oral local delivery of therapeutic biologics is generally limited due to the multiple obstacles of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, mainly represented by acidic stomach pH and digestive enzymes. In the present study, spray congealing was used to prepare solid lipid microparticles (SLMs) loaded with β-galactosidase (lactase), an enzyme used for the treatment of lactose intolerance, to achieve a local drug delivery to the small intestine. Lactase was characterized in terms of activity at different pH, kinetic parameters and proteolytic degradation by digestive enzymes. Then, five lipid excipient

Allergic fungal rhinosinusitis (AFRS) is a highly recurrent form of chronic allergic rhinosinusitis in immunocompetent patients. This study aims to compare the recurrence rates of AFRS between patients who received nasal steroid spray alone and patients who received a combination of nasal and oral steroids after endoscopic sinus surgery. This was a retrospective chart review of patients who underwent endoscopic sinus surgery for AFRS. The selection of the 39 participants has followed the 5 aspects of Bent and Kuhn criteria. Patients were divided into 2 groups: those discharged on both nasal an

The oral delivery of proteins and peptides provides an attractive dosing option due to its high patient compliance. However, as oral formulations of such macromolecules require the addition of typically poorly compactable permeation enhancers, the compression behaviour in tableting processes can become challenging. In this study, we show that poor compression behaviour can be overcome by tailoring the properties of peptide or protein particles, especially in high-dose tablet formulations. Spray-dried particles with varying particle size and morphology were produced and characterized. The parti

Many women experience pain during hysterosalpingogram (HSG). This prospective, randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled study assessed whether the use of benzocaine spray during HSG is associated with reduced pain as compared with placebo. Thirty women presenting for HSG were enrolled and randomized to either benzocaine or saline spray. Treatment groups were similar in age, race, parity, pre-procedure oral analgesic use and history of dysmenorrhoea and/or chronic pelvic pain. Median change in pain score from baseline to procedure was 50.6mm (-7.4 to 98.8mm) in the benzocaine group and 70

Nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs) have attracted considerable interest as drug delivery systems capable of enhancing the solubility and oral bioavailability of poorly water-soluble drugs. In our previous work, cannabidiol (CBD)-loaded NLCs prepared by hot homogenization demonstrated improved dissolution and oral bioavailability. In the present study, hot-melt extrusion (HME) was investigated as a rapid and easily scalable alternative method for the preparation of CBD NLCs. Additionally, spray drying was used to convert the prepared CBD NLCs into a solid dosage form. CBD NLCs were prepared u

OBJECTIVE: The pharmacokinetics of oral diazepam are affected by food, but food-effect studies have not been conducted for diazepam nasal spray because it is believed that most absorption occurs via the nasal mucosa. However, gastrointestinal side effects reported with nasal diazepam suggest that at least a portion of the drug may be absorbed enterally and thus subject to food effects. The objective of this study was to evaluate the possible effects of food on the pharmacokinetics of diazepam nasal spray in healthy adults.

Since the publication of the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) study followed by the results of the Million Women Study (MWS), the role of hormonal therapy in postmenopausal women has been further challenged. The risks attributed to hormone therapy have been overestimated and the data has been wrongly extrapolated to the whole class of therapies. The trends in postmenopausal hormonal therapy seem now to favor the non-oral delivery routes for both the estrogen and the progestin for women with an intact uterus, based on the assumption that a lesser stimulation of the liver proteins and a neutral m

INTRODUCTION: Post-adenotonsillectomy pain is often severe, requiring substantial analgesia in the first 48-72 h. This pain is not only distressing to the patient and his or her parents, but often reflects poorly on an otherwise well performed procedure. Safe, simple and effective post-adenotonsillectomy pain control is still clinically elusive, even though a multitude of surgical and analgesic interventions have been proposed.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate the analgesic properties of immediate post-operative application of xylocaine 10% pump spray to the tonsillar fossae in children having unde

While the formulation of nanoparticle (NP) suspensions has been widely applied in materials and life science, the recovery of NPs from such a suspension into a solid state is practically important to confer long-term storage stability. However, solidification, while preserving the original nanoscale properties, remains a formidable challenge in the pharmaceutical and biomedical applications of NPs. Herein we combined flash nanoprecipitation (FNP) and spray-drying as a nanofabrication platform for NP formulation and recovery without compromising the dissolution kinetics of the active ingredient
