Motion sickness: an evolutionary and genetic basis for the negative reinforcement model.

It has been theorized that motion sickness evolved as a negative reinforcement system which terminates motion involving postural instability and/or sensory conflict. A hypothetical example is provided by a "thought experiment" whereby protohominids are in a tree looking for food. Selection pressure results when the organisms that have an aversion to motion-producing sensory conflict do not venture out too far on the tree limbs and therefore tend to survive. In order to support an evolutionary model for motion sickness there must be evidence for genetic and/or heritable predisposition. The pres

Multisensory self-motion compensation during object trajectory judgments.

Judging object trajectory during self-motion is a fundamental ability for mobile organisms interacting with their environment. This fundamental ability requires the nervous system to compensate for the visual consequences of self-motion in order to make accurate judgments, but the mechanisms of this compensation are poorly understood. We comprehensively examined both the accuracy and precision of observers' ability to judge object trajectory in the world when self-motion was defined by vestibular, visual, or combined visual-vestibular cues. Without decision feedback, subjects demonstrated no c

NRG Oncology and Particle Therapy Co-Operative Group Patterns of Practice Survey and Consensus Recommendations on Pencil-Beam Scanning Proton Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy and Hypofractionated Radiation Therapy for Thoracic Malignancies.

Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) and hypofractionation using pencil-beam scanning (PBS) proton therapy (PBSPT) is an attractive option for thoracic malignancies. Combining the advantages of target coverage conformity and critical organ sparing from both PBSPT and SBRT, this new delivery technique has great potential to improve the therapeutic ratio, particularly for tumors near critical organs. Safe and effective implementation of PBSPT SBRT/hypofractionation to treat thoracic malignancies is more challenging than the conventionally fractionated PBSPT because of concerns of amplified

Motion Mitigation Techniques for Abdominal and Cardiac MR Imaging.

MRI of the heart and abdominal organs provides unparalleled soft tissue contrast and quantitative biomarkers, yet remains highly susceptible to physiological motion. Contractions of the myocardium, respiratory excursions, peristalsis, vascular pulsatility, and unpredictable bulk patient movement generate artifacts that impair image quality, limit reproducibility, and may necessitate repeat scans. This review summarizes motion correction strategies in cardiac and abdominal MRI, emphasizing both clinical applications and methodological principles. Techniques to address motion can be broadly cate

Assessment of intrafractional motion of the cervix-uterus by MR-guided radiotherapy system†.

The uterus is known as one of the moving organs. We evaluated the movement of the uterus during irradiation and the effects of changes in the surrounding organs using a magnetic resonance (MR)-guided radiotherapy system. Seven patients with cervical cancer underwent pre- and posttreatment MR imaging to assess changes in the positioning of the uterus and cervix as well as the alterations in bladder and rectal volume. The study revealed that the movements of the uterus were greater than that of the cervix and showed a tendency to correlate with the bladder rather than the rectum. We also examine

Experimental evolution of active Brownian grains driven by quantum effects in superfluid helium.

Complex structures, consisting of a large number of interacting subsystems, have the ability to self-organize and evolve, when the scattering of energy coming from the outside ensures the maintenance of stationary ordered structures with an entropy less than the equilibrium entropy. One of the fundamental problems here is the role of quantum phenomena in the evolution of macroscopic objects. We provide experimental evidence for the active Brownian motion and evolution of structures driven by quantum effects for micron-sized grains levitating in superfluid helium. The active Brownian motion of

Measuring Strain in Diffusion-Weighted Data Using Tagged Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

Accurate strain measurement in a deforming organ has been essential in motion analysis using medical images. In recent years, internal tissue's in vivo motion and strain computation has been mostly achieved through dynamic magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. However, such data lack information on tissue's intrinsic fiber directions, preventing computed strain tensors from being projected onto a direction of interest. Although diffusion-weighted MR imaging excels at providing fiber tractography, it yields static images unmatched with dynamic MR data. This work reports an algorithm workflow that es

Functional MT + lesion impairs contralateral motion processing.

Human motion processing region MT + is retinotopically organized with perception of and attention to motion in the right visual field preferentially associated with left MT + activity and vice versa. However, the degree to which MT + is crucial for motion processing is uncertain. We report an epilepsy patient with visual symptoms early in his seizure evolution and a left temporal-occipital seizure onset electrographically in whom we hypothesized a functional left MT + lesion. The patient was impaired in his right but not left visual field on a hemifield motion attention task and demonstrated w

Orientation sensitive properties of visually driven neurons in extrastriate area 21a of cat cortex.

Orientation sensitive properties of extrastriate area 21a neurons were investigated. Special attention was paid to the qualitative characteristics of neuron responses to the different orientations of visual stimulus motion across neuron classical receptive fields (CRF). The results of experiments have shown that a group of neurons (31%) in area 21a with specialized responses to moving visual stimuli changed their direction selective (DS) characteristics depending on the orientation of the stimulus movement. Some neurons reveal an abrupt drop of the direction sensitivity index (DI) to certain o

Single or multi-channel vaginal cuff high-dose-rate brachytherapy: Is replanning necessary prior to each fraction?

PURPOSE: Adjuvant high-dose-rate vaginal brachytherapy (VB) is commonly used in endometrial cancer. We evaluated the dosimetric and cost differences of using either a single plan or replan prior to each fraction for single- and multi-channel VB. METHODS AND MATERIALS: We evaluated 84 fractions from 25 patients at our institution (16 single-channel patients each 3 fractions; 9 multi-channel patients each 4 fractions). All fractions were preceded by a computed tomographic (CT) simulation scan, after which a unique treatment plan was generated, dose points per International Commission on Radiati

Deficits in the processing of local and global motion in very low birthweight children.

This study evaluated the impact of premature birth on the development of local and global motion processing in a group of very low birthweight (<1500 g), 5- to 8-year-old children. Sensitivity to first- and second-order local motion stimuli and coherence thresholds for global motion in random dot kinematograms were measured. Relative to full-term controls, premature children showed deficits on all three aspects of motion processing. These problems could not be accounted for by stereo deficits, amblyopia, or attentional problems. A history of mild retinopathy of prematurity and/or intraventricu

[The motion sickness under reversing goggles (1st report)].

We observed locomotion and motion sickness in 10 normal adults wearing reversing goggles while moving outdoors. Horizontal reversal of the visual field produced moderate to severe ataxia and motion sickness in all subjects except one. There was marked variability in the sensitivity among different subjects. In contrast, vertical reversal produced no symptoms. Confusion of information relation to spatial orientation possibly caused both the motion sickness and abnormal locomotion. Horizontal reversal of visual information produces disorientation because visual information is equal in importance

Induced pluripotent stem cell intervention rescues ventricular wall motion disparity, achieving biological cardiac resynchronization post-infarction.

Dyssynchronous myocardial motion aggravates cardiac pump function. Cardiac resynchronization using pacing devices is a standard-of-care in the management of heart failure. Post-infarction, however, scar tissue formation impedes the efficacy of device-based therapy. The present study tests a regenerative approach aimed at targeting the origin of abnormal motion to prevent dyssynchronous organ failure. Induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells harbour a reparative potential, and were here bioengineered from somatic fibroblasts reprogrammed with the stemness factors OCT3/4, SOX2, KLF4, and c-MYC. In a

Extended reality simulator for dynamic visualization and evaluation of stereotactic arrhythmia radioablation (STAR) treatment plans within RAVENTA trial.

Stereotactic arrhythmia radioablation (STAR) represents an emerging non-invasive treatment for therapy-refractory ventricular tachycardia. Yet, planning remains challenged by multimodal cardiac imaging integration, electroanatomical mapping (EAM) transfer, and cardiorespiratory motion effects on dose delivery. Current radiotherapy (RT) planning systems offer mainly static visualization and limited access to intramural myocardial structures, hindering communication between cardiology and radiation oncology teams. We present a novel extended reality (XR) simulator designed to dynamically visuali

The cross-domain functional organization of posterior lateral temporal cortex: insights from ALE meta-analyses of 7 cognitive domains spanning 12,000 participants.

The posterior lateral temporal cortex is implicated in many verbal, nonverbal, and social cognitive domains and processes. Yet without directly comparing these disparate domains, the region's organization remains unclear; do distinct processes engage discrete subregions, or could different domains engage shared neural correlates and processes? Here, using activation likelihood estimation meta-analyses, the bilateral posterior lateral temporal cortex subregions engaged in 7 domains were directly compared. These domains comprised semantics, semantic control, phonology, biological motion, face pr

Identifying behavioral structure from deep variational embeddings of animal motion.

Quantification and detection of the hierarchical organization of behavior is a major challenge in neuroscience. Recent advances in markerless pose estimation enable the visualization of high-dimensional spatiotemporal behavioral dynamics of animal motion. However, robust and reliable technical approaches are needed to uncover underlying structure in these data and to segment behavior into discrete hierarchically organized motifs. Here, we present an unsupervised probabilistic deep learning framework that identifies behavioral structure from deep variational embeddings of animal motion (VAME).

A theory to explain some physiological effects of the infrasonic emissions at some wind farm sites.

For at least four decades, there have been reports in scientific literature of people experiencing motion sickness-like symptoms attributed to low-frequency sound and infrasound. In the last several years, there have been an increasing number of such reports with respect to wind turbines; this corresponds to wind turbines becoming more prevalent. A study in Shirley, WI, has led to interesting findings that include: (1) To induce major effects, it appears that the source must be at a very low frequency, about 0.8 Hz and below with maximum effects at about 0.2 Hz; (2) the largest, newest wind tu

Synergetic Control Framework for Autonomous UAV Swarm Coordination.

This study presents a synergetic control approach for coordinating the motion of a UAV swarm based on self-organization principles and energy potential interactions. The proposed method effectively addresses the known limitations of traditional potential field techniques by introducing a procedure for synthesizing the synergetic control of swarm motion using a virtual force field with symmetric attraction and repulsion functions. A Lyapunov/LaSalle stability analysis and a geometric safety radius argument show that this keeps the swarm's motion conflict-free, subject to the platform's kinemati
