[Can dental problems have influence on difficulties in treating paranasal sinusitis in children?].

Paranasal sinusitis is a condition that is treated by a General Practitioner and in case it fails it requires specialistic therapy. In most cases the inflammation is connected with nasal mucosa infection. However, in older children and adolescents sinusitis caused by spreading of tooth and gingiva inflammatory process can be an essential therapeutic and diagnostic problem. It is most often connected with periapical lesions, complications following dental procedures and oroantral fistula inflammation. Inflammatory process originally concerns maxillary sinus, however, it often undergoes generali

Nasal regurgitation as the presenting symptom of rhinolithiasis.

Rhinoliths are not common but like other rare conditions have an attraction and therefore will be familiar. This case report has been presented as a reminder that perforation of the hard palate by a rhinolith does occur occasionally, and in this instance was a pleasant surprise to all concerned.

Aspergillosis of the Maxillary Sinus Associated With Dental Implant.

Aspergillosis is a fungal disease caused by the fungus Aspergillus; this disease frequently involves the lungs and occasionally the maxillary sinus. Aspergillosis in the maxillary sinus usually has the characteristics of a noninvasive form. It has been suggested that spores of aspergillus can be inhaled into the maxillary sinus via the osteomeatal complex or via an oroantral fistula after dental procedures, such as an extraction. However, maxillary aspergillosis related to implant installation has rarely been reported. This report regards unusual cases of maxillary aspergillosis associated wit

Recovering the personal identity of an elderly patient with cleft lip: a case report.

Instances of unoperated cleft lip and/or palate (CLP) in adult or elderly patients are still seen in developing countries. This paper presents the multidisciplinary management and the personal identity revival of a 72-year-old patient with unoperated unilateral complete cleft lip. The facial deformity was characterized by a protrusion of the excess of orbicularis oris muscle, irregularities of the upper lip, nose distortion, and septum deviation to the cleft side. The patient was edentulous with the maxillary alveolar ridge collapsed and an associated fistula. The cleft lip was repaired using

Suppurative (bacterial) sinusitis.

Upper respiratory tract (viral) infection is the most common predisposing cause of suppurative sinusitis. Acute disease is manifested by pain, nasal discharge, systemic manifestations, and nasal obstruction. In chronic disease (greater than 3 months' duration) nasal airway obstruction and postnasal discharge may be the only symptoms. Diagnosis is made on the basis of the history and physical examination, supported by roentgenographic findings and, if necessary, cultures. Acute infection is treated with antibiotics, decongestants, and analgesics. If medical management fails, surgery is necessar

[Chronic unilateral maxillary sinusitis caused by foreign bodies in the maxillary sinus].

Chronic maxillary sinusitis is a common condition. The disease is most often caused by blockage of the sinus ostia or presence of an oroantral fistula. We report two cases of unilateral chronic maxillary sinusitis associated with foreign bodies in the maxillary sinus. In the first case the foreign body consisted of dental amalgam, in the second case of two silastic sponges left behind from a former operation because of "blowout" fracture. In the case of benign chronic maxillary sinusitis and foreign bodies, functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) preceded by a CT-scan is an excellent approa

Endoscopic Repair of Persistent Oroantral Communications Using the Caldwell-Luc Approach.

In this article, a novel endoscopic technique used to close oro-antral fistulas will be described. In the technique described here, 24 cases were surgically treated between May 2011, and November 2014. Under endonasal endoscopic examination following partial inferior uncinectomy, the natural ostium of the maxillary sinus was identified; through this tract, a curved aspirator was advanced into the sinus. If present, we extracted endoscopically tissues causing obliteration of the ostium through the Caldwell-Luc antrostomy, taking care to preserve the integrity of the natural ostium. In the techn

Mechanistic Insights into Calcium Oxalate Crystals in Aspergillosis of the Maxillary Sinus.

BACKGROUND: Aspergillus species can induce calcium oxalate crystal deposition, serving as an important diagnostic marker when typical fruiting bodies or ancillary techniques are unavailable. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 35-year-old male with recurrent oroantral fistula and maxillary sinus opacity. Histopathology demonstrated septate hyphae and birefringent calcium oxalate crystals under polarized light, confirming non-invasive aspergillosis.Oxalosis, frequently linked to Aspergillus niger, contributes to mucosal destruction through vascular compromise and oxidative injury. CONCLUSION: Recogn

Extraction of upper first molar resulting in fracture of maxillary tuberosity.

Fracture of the maxillary tuberosity sometimes can happen when pneumatization of the maxillary sinus extends between the roots of upper molars. Some factors may lead to this complication including prominent or curved roots, chronic periapical infection, hypercementosis, root ankylosis and tooth fusion. This paper reports a case with fracture of the maxillary tuberosity following extraction of an upper first molar in general dental practice. Prevention from any complication during extractions of maxillary molars with large antral enlargement is possible with careful preoperative examination and

A review of oro-antral communications.

Oro-antral communications are occasionally produced during routine oral surgery procedures and often cannot be avoided. Dentistry's emphasis on implantology means that defects in the maxillary sinus are encountered far more frequently than before; therefore, knowledge of the maxillary sinus is of the utmost importance. Unfortunately, many general dentists have not been trained to provide proper treatment to correct these defects. Swift diagnosis and subsequent treatment are vital to proper and successful management. This article reviews the literature and the anatomy of the maxillary sinus and

Closure of Oroantral Communication With Plasma-Rich Fibrin Membrane.

Oroantral communication (OAC) is the opening between the maxillary sinus and oral cavity. It may cause oroantral fistula or maxillary sinusitis if left untreated. The surgical closure of the OAC within 48 hours was recommended to avoid the complications like sinus infections. The aim of this study is to evaluate the treatment of OACs with plasma-rich fibrin (PRF) which is safe and easy to implement in the OACs.This study was conducted with the patients, who required the treatment of the OAC, which was developed after the posterior maxillary tooth extraction in the Dental and Maxillofacial Depa

Management of a maxillary sinus foreign body (dental bur).

Metal foreign bodies are occasionally found in the paranasal sinuses. Often they result from the escape of material through an oroantral fistula or from trauma. Rarely, they occur as a complication of a dental procedure. A literature review revealed only four other reports of iatrogenic dental bur lodgment in the maxillary sinus, all of which are in the dental literature. Otolaryngologists, who might be required to deal with this complication, must be knowledgeable about its management. In this article we describe a patient who was referred to our otolaryngology department for management of a

Mucormycosis of maxilla following tooth extraction in immunocompetent patients: Reports and review.

Mucormycosis is a rare, fulminant, rapidly spreading fungal infection, which usually affects patient with underlying immune deficiency. If not managed promptly, the disease is characterized by progressive necrosis and is often fatal. A review of English literature shows that only fourteen cases of mucormycosis have been reported after tooth extraction. This paper highlights two cases of mucormycosis subsequent to tooth extraction in healthy adult patients. This first patient presented with an oroantral fistula and extensive maxillary necrosis. Whereas the second case was localized and presente
