Hantaviruses infect their reservoir hosts and humans, but the infection only causes disease in humans. In Asia and Europe (the Old World), the hantaviruses usually cause haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS). This article summarizes the current understanding of hantavirus epidemiology, as well as the clinical manifestations, pathogenesis, renal pathology, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of HFRS. Moreover, the spatiotemporal distribution of HFRS was analysed based on the latest data obtained from the Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, for the period January 2004 to

The work is based on the hitherto implemented examinations of lungs of rodents from the territory of the Czech Republic for the presence of hantavirus antigen. For detection of a species specific antigen the ELISA set Hantagnost from the Poliomyelitis Institute in Moscow was used. A total of 1494 micromammalia of 15 species caught in 1991-2001 were examined. The hantavirus antigen was detected in the lungs of 101 individuals (6.8%) whereby representatives of the species Microtus arvalis predominated markedly: 97 positive from 687 examined (14.1%). Twice the hantavirus antigen was proved in Mic

Although hantaviruses have traditionally been considered geographically restricted rodent-borne pathogens, globalization, climate change, ecosystem disruption, and environmental contamination may collectively favor novel transmission scenarios and altered epidemiological patterns. The experience gained during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic showed the importance of environmental determinants, airborne exposure, and host susceptibility factors in emerging viral diseases. In this context, increasing but still indirect evidence suggests that environmental toxicants and the exposome may modulate susceptib

Pharmaceutical pollution is globally widespread and known to affect the biology and ecology of exposed wildlife. However, its effects on wildlife disease, including zoonotic (animal-to-human transmitted) infections, remains unclear. We examined the presence of 97 Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) and their associations with zoonotic infections (Leptospira spp., Seoul orthohantavirus, Toxoplasma gondii, Capillaria spp., and Angiostrongylus spp.) in Rattus norvegicus and R. rattus rats, two globally distributed zoonotic reservoirs. We collected 152 rats from low-income urban communities i

Hantaviruses are enveloped, negative-sense RNA viruses. Rodents serve as natural reservoirs, and spillover into humans causes hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome and hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. While transmission typically occurs by inhaling aerosolized rodent excreta, the Andes virus variant is capable of human-to-human transmission. A recent outbreak involving a person-to-person transmission cluster aboard the cruise ship MV Hondius has underscored the urgency of hantavirus preparedness. Immediate global pandemic risk remains low because sustained transmission requires prolonged close c

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to build a prediction model to discriminate precociously hantavirus infection from leptospirosis, identifying the conditions and risk factors associated with these diseases.
METHODS: A logistic regression model in which the response variable was the presence of hantavirus or leptospirosis was adjusted.
RESULTS: As a result, the method selected the following variables that influenced the prediction formula: sociodemographic variables, clinical manifestations, and exposure to environmental risks. All variables considered in the model presented statistical s

In recent years, ultrastructural studies of viral surface spikes from three different genera within the Bunyaviridae family have revealed a remarkable diversity in their spike organization. Despite this structural heterogeneity, in every case the spikes seem to be composed of heterodimers formed by Gn and Gc envelope glycoproteins. In this review, current knowledge of the Gn and Gc structures and their functions in virus cell entry and exit is summarized. During virus cell entry, the role of Gn and Gc in receptor binding has not yet been determined. Nevertheless, biochemical studies suggest th

Hantaviruses are enveloped single-stranded ribonucleic acid (RNA) viruses that belong to the family Bunyaviridae. They are widely distributed and maintained in populations of specific insectivores or rodent host species (mice or rats). In their natural host, hantaviruses develop persistent and asymptomatic infections with lifelong virus shedding in excreta. Transmission to humans occurs via direct contact with faeces, urine and saliva of infected rodents, in particular by inhaling virus contaminated aerosol. There are a variety of virus types that occur in different geographic areas, dependent

Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is a severe and often fatal zoonotic disease primarily caused by the Hantaan virus (HTNV), a member of the Orthohantavirus genus. Although immune cells are known to play critical roles in HTNV-induced HFRS, the detailed dynamic changes, phenotypic alterations, and functional profiles of distinct immune subsets over the course of the disease remain poorly understood. In this review, we summarize current understanding of key immune populations during HTNV infection, including monocytes, macrophages, dendritic cells (DCs), natural killer (NK) cells, ne

Successful repopulation programs of Eurasian beavers (Castor fiber) have resulted in an increase in beaver populations throughout Europe. This may be of public health relevance because beavers can host multiple zoonotic pathogens. From March 2018 to March 2020, opportunistic testing of dead beavers was performed for hepatitis E virus, orthohantavirus, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Bartonella spp., extended-spectrum-betalactamase or AmpC (ESBL/AmpC-)-producing Enterobacteriaceae, Francisella tularensis, Leptospira spp., Neoehrlichia mikurensis, Babesia spp., Echinococcus multilocularis, Toxoplasma

BACKGROUND: Haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is caused by hantaviruses and is associated with variable thrombocytopenia, coagulation abnormalities, and bleeding manifestations. While clinical features have been described in multiple studies, no previous systematic review has synthesised evidence on haemostatic dysfunction in HFRS. This review aimed to characterise the clinical and laboratory features of coagulation disturbances in HFRS to inform understanding of disease mechanisms and future research.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We systematically searched MEDLINE, PubMed, CIN

We describe a patient in Argentina with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection and hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS). Although both coronavirus disease and HPS can be fatal when not diagnosed and treated promptly, HPS is much more lethal. This case report may contribute to improved detection of co-infections in HPS-endemic regions.

Dengue and hantavirus are endemic in central Panama. We present a case report of a patient coinfected with dengue and hantavirus who presented overlapping clinical manifestations of both infections. The patient did not require intensive care-as it is commonplace during hantavirus pulmonary syndrome-and he had a good outcome. Patient's care was positively impacted due to correct diagnosis of coinfection. This case highlights that in endemic areas, coinfection with dengue virus and hantavirus should be suspected. To the best of our knowledge, this case is the first documented case of coinfection

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of this review is to summarize the current knowledge regarding the diagnosis and treatment of indigenous new world hantavirus infections.
RECENT FINDINGS: Recent studies have defined the incubation period of new world hantavirus infections, provided additional evidence for person-to-person transmission of Andes virus, described a rapid method for the presumptive diagnosis of infection in the cardiopulmonary phase through a review of the peripheral smear, and suggested that intravenous ribavirin is probably not effective for the treatment of new world hantavirus

Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) is an uncommon zoonotic respiratory illness with a high case fatality rate. Recent travel-associated Andes orthohantavirus clusters have renewed interest in early radiographic recognition of the disease outside its usual geographic range. Artificial intelligence (AI) tools developed during the COVID-19 pandemic now inform several radiology workflows, but the application of AI to HPS chest imaging remains largely unexplored. This narrative review summarises the imaging features of HPS across modalities, considers lessons from AI applications in COVID-19 and v
