Musculoskeletal study of cebocephalic and cyclopic lamb heads illuminates links between normal and abnormal development, evolution and human pathologies.

This paper is part of the emerging field of Evolutionary Developmental Pathology, dedicated to study the links between normal and abnormal development, evolution and human pathologies. We analyzed the head musculoskeletal system of several 'natural mutant' newborn lambs displaying various degrees of abnormality, from mild defects to cebocephaly and to cyclopia, and compared them with humans. Interestingly, muscle defects are less marked than osteological ones, and contrarily to the latter they tend to display left-right assymetries. In individuals with cebocephalic and even cyclopic skulls alm

Morphological evolution of the carnivoran sacrum.

The sacrum is a key piece of the vertebrate skeleton, since it connects the caudal region with the presacral region of the vertebral column and the hind limbs through the pelvis. Therefore, understanding its form and function is of great relevance in vertebrate ecomorphology. However, it is striking that morphometric studies that quantify its morphological evolution in relation to function are scarce. The main goal of this study is to investigate the morphological evolution of the sacrum in relation to its function in the mammalian order Carnivora, using three-dimensional (3D) geometric morpho

[Descriptive, radiographic, topographic and functional anatomy applied to distal radius fractures].

Extensive anatomical knowledge is needed in order to correctly treat distal radius fractures: normal and pathological osteology of the distal radius, distal radio-ulnar joint and radiocarpal joint-both on the descriptive and functional level-the neurovascular and muscular environments of the distal radius-which are essential to the surgical approaches-and the angles that need to be restored during the reduction. All of these concepts are broached in this article.

Evidence for the Loss of Pneumatization and Pneumosteal Tissues in Secondarily Aquatic Archosaurs.

The evolutionary origins of the avian air sac pulmonary system are enigmatic due to the rarity of soft-tissue preservation in fossils. Here, we test whether fine anchoring fibers on the endosteal bone of bird and non-avian dinosaur vertebrae-termed "pneumosteum"-are absent in taxa lacking pneumatic openings. We studied thin sections from the caudalmost cervical and cranial dorsal vertebrae of 21 extant amniotes to infer the presence or absence of invading diverticula through vertebral foramina. We also provide a differential diagnosis of the structural features of pneumosteum. We found that th

Interplay between postcranial morphology and locomotor types in Neotropical sigmodontine rodents.

Sigmodontine rats are one of the most diverse components of the Neotropical mammal fauna. They exhibit a wide ecological diversity and a variety of locomotor types that allow them to occupy different environments. To explore the relationship between morphology and locomotor types, we analyzed traits of the postcranial osteology (axial and appendicular skeletons) of 329 specimens belonging to 51 species and 29 genera of sigmodontines exhibiting different locomotor types. In this work, postcranial skeletal characters of these rats are considered in an ecomorphological study for the first time. S

Preconquest Peruvian neurosurgeons: a study of Inca and pre-Columbian trephination and the art of medicine in ancient Peru.

Trephination and craniotomy performed by abrasion, scraping, crosscut sawing, and drilling are the oldest known surgical techniques used by primitive peoples. As a result of archaeological findings, the human skull is the most frequently studied part of the excavated body, leading to the creation of a new aspect of anthropology known as "cultural osteology." Found in ancient tombs, the human remains, mummies, skeletons, and their belongings, including war instruments, pottery, clothing, jewels, and surgical instruments, constitute the richest source of insight into the lives and pragmatic acti

Disability in a medieval village community: A unique case of facial dysmorphism.

OBJECTIVE: To identify the pathology causing the severe facial dysmorphia of a medieval individual from the site of Rigny (Indre-et-Loire, France) and to evaluate its functional repercussions on the subject's hearing and social life. MATERIALS: An individual from Rigny for the osteological study, 69 individuals from the region for the Ct-Scan study and 48 individuals from the site for the isotopic analysis. METHODS: Macroscopic analysis was performed using standard osteological methods. Consequences of pathology on hearing were assessed by CT-scan. Dietary behaviour was analysed by stable ca

[Polydactyly of the hands. Recommendation for expanded classification].

The few anatomical findings summarized in the literature have now been expanded by our own anatomical dissections on four hands of still-born infants with postaxial polydactyly, and by intra-operative microsurgical investigations of 25 polydactylous hands. New experimentally-based knowledge of embryology helps interpret the morphogenesis and specific anatomy of polydactyly. It can be postulated that both the location and definite form of polydactyly are a function of the location and extent of initial excessive cell proliferation and disturbance of cell necrosis in the hand blastema. The concl

Altered shapes, same people: Scaphocephaly in the early modern Bucharest.

Premature sagittal suture synostosis was identified in eight specimens dated between the 18th and 20th centuries CE, of which seven are kept within the Rainer Osteological Collection in Bucharest and one was retrieved from the archaeologically investigated Saint Sava Church Cemetery. Our study focused on metric measurements, aiming to compare these specimens with three other samples comprising normal and scaphocephalic individuals, with both a Romanian and worldwide distribution. In total, 374 individuals were used in this study. However, although metric measurements clearly show that these in

Layer-by-layer soft-tissue effects on flexion-extension-dominant passive ex vivo limb joint ROM in quadrupedal mammals: An anatomical contribution to a morphofunctional framework.

Functional reconstructions of extinct mammals often infer joint mobility from osteological geometry, yet the mobility envelope in life emerged from bones embedded within a layered soft-tissue system. More broadly, passive joint mobility provides an anatomical bridge between osteological form, soft-tissue constraints, and biological movement. Ex vivo range-of-motion (ROM) datasets that explicitly partition soft-tissue contributions across multiple joints and postural types remain scarce for mammals. Here, we quantify layer-by-layer effects on flexion-extension-dominant passive ex vivo limb join

Morphological, Radiographic and Three-Dimensional Scanning Characterization of the Skull and Mandible of the American Crocodile (Crocodylus acutus).

The American crocodile (Crocodylus acutus) is a widely distributed Neotropical species for which detailed osteological descriptions of the skull and mandible remain scarce. This study provides an integrative characterization of the cranial and mandibular complex using gross anatomy, descriptive cranial morphometry, radiography, and three-dimensional (3D) scanning. Four skulls and mandibles from post mortem specimens were prepared following standard osteological procedures, and descriptive cranial measurements were recorded. Radiographic projection allowed visualization of bone margins, cranial

The evolution of the meatal chamber in crocodyliforms.

The unique outer ear of crocodylians consists of a large meatal chamber (MC) concealed by a pair of muscular earlids that shape a large part of the animal's head. This chamber is limited medially by the enlarged tympanic membrane. Yet, the anatomy of this distinctive and complex region is underexplored and its evolutionary history untraced. The osteology and soft tissues of the MC in extant crocodylians was analysed to describe it and establish osteological correlates within this region. A broad survey of the osteological correlates was conducted in major clades of fossil crocodyliforms to est

Evaluating bony predictors of bite force across the order Carnivora.

In carnivorans, bite force is a critical and ecologically informative variable that has been correlated with multiple morphological, behavioral, and environmental attributes. Whereas in vivo measures of biting performance are difficult to obtain in many taxa-and impossible in extinct species-numerous osteological proxies exist for estimating masticatory muscle size and force. These proxies include both volumetric approximations of muscle dimensions and direct measurements of muscular attachment sites. In this study, we compare three cranial osteological techniques for estimating muscle size (i

[Prophylaxis and therapy of the glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis - a review of recent guidelines].

Several international guidelines for treatment and prophylaxis of glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis (GIO) have been published. Consistent with the development of new therapeutic agents, a different approach to treatment can be recognized depending on the year of publication. Also, new insights for the postmenopausal osteoporosis leave their marks on recent guidelines. The working committee on Osteology of the Austrian Society for Rheumatology and Rehabilitation (ÖGR) sifted through actual guidelines and recent literature on the topic to develop recommendations for the prophylaxis and treatme

Reconstructing the origin and early evolution of the snake brain.

Snakes represent one-eighth of terrestrial vertebrate diversity, encompassing various lifestyles, ecologies, and morphologies. However, the ecological origins and early evolution of snakes are controversial topics in biology. To address the paucity of well-preserved fossils and the caveats of osteological traits for reconstructing snake evolution, we applied a different ecomorphological hypothesis based on high-definition brain reconstructions of extant Squamata. Our predictive models revealed a burrowing lifestyle with opportunistic behavior at the origin of crown snakes, reflecting a complex

Giovanni Filippo Ingrassia: A five-hundred year-long lesson.

Giovanni Filippo Ingrassia was born five centuries ago in Regalbuto, a small town in the center of Sicily. After his medical course in Padua, under the guidance of Vesalius and Fallopius, he gained international fame as a physician and was recruited as a Professor of human anatomy in Naples and later in Palermo. He is remembered as "the new Galen" or "the Sicilian Hippocrates." He contributed to the knowledge of human anatomy through the description of single bones rather than the whole skeleton. In particular, he was the first to describe the "stapes," the "lesser wings of the sphenoid" and v

The first occurrence of an avian-style respiratory infection in a non-avian dinosaur.

Other than repaired fractures, osteoarthritis, and periosteal reaction, the vertebrate fossil record has limited evidence of non-osseous diseases. This difficulty in paleontological diagnoses stems from (1) the inability to conduct medical testing, (2) soft-tissue pathologic structures are less likely to be preserved, and (3) many osseous lesions are not diagnostically specific. However, here reported for the first time is an avian-style respiratory disorder in a non-avian dinosaur. This sauropod presents irregular bony pathologic structures stemming from the pneumatic features in the cervical
