Until now there has no been no simple, reliable clinical test that assesses the function of the otolith organs. However, recent work has suggested the occurrence of an easily identifiable electromyographic (EMG) waveform in isometrically contracting sternomastoid muscles in response to loud clicks. This is thought to represent an otolith evoked disynaptic reflex. Equipment routinely used for evoked response audiometry (ERA) has been adapted to investigate this response. A short latency (8 ms) positive-negative EMG waveform has been recorded in 31 of 32 normal subjects. The latency of the posit

The statolith ocular reflex induced by whole body roll was assessed in 10 patients with Meniere's disease who had undergone a standard vestibular test battery. Normal eye torsion was noted in 4 patients despite the presence of severe symptoms, and a caloric hyporeflexia in one patient. Eye torsion was diminished in one direction of body roll in 4 patients and in both directions of body roll in 2 patients. An abnormal asymmetry of eye torsion (> 16%) was found in the case of body roll towards the normal ear irrespective of whether a caloric asymmetry was found. An abnormal asymmetry of the stat

In three psychophysical experiments subjects (Ss), blindfolded and earphoned with white noise, estimated their angular speed A) after brief acceleration to constant centric or eccentric rotation, and B) after deceleration to a full stop. Ss either indicated whenever they were rotated through 180 degrees, or manipulated the objective velocity such that the subjective one stayed constant. With Ss in an earth-vertical attitude, subjective speed declined exponentially with a time constant that depended on eccentricity in paradigm A, but not in B. The time constant depended linearly on the amount o

Pendular rotation in the eccentric position produces the same angular stimulation as that in conventional pendular rotation and, in addition, involves linear centrifugal and tangential acceleration forces which act on the otolith organs. In the eccentric position, normal subjects showed an increase in gain at 0.64 Hz, when compared with the gain with the head in the centered position. Therefore, we concluded that it is possible to diagnose otolith dysfunction by this comparison. In this study, we applied centric and eccentric pendular rotation tests to patients with Menière's disease and vesti

The scanning electron microscope and the light microscope were used to examine the inner ear vestibular organs of guinea pigs for structural damages after exposure to continuous intense noise for one hour. The functional test of the vestibular system was assessed with the electronystagmography. The results indicated that vestibular organs could be affected by noise. The sensory cell cilia were mostly damaged or lost in the middle part of the cristae. No remarkable cell alterations were found in the epithelia of the otolithic organs. We also observed that otoconia in the maculae were reduced or

Our laboratory at the Johnson Space Center has employed the H-reflex recorded from the soleus muscle as a method of monosynaptic reflex testing in conjunction with vertical linear acceleration to assess modification of utriculo-saccular function induced through prolonged exposure to microgravity. It was hypothesized that exposure to free fall would reduce the necessity for postural reflexes in the major leg muscles, and that postural modification would reflect a change, not in the peripheral vestibular organs, but more centrally. This postural adjustment would reflect a sensory motor rearrange

The static ocular counterrolling (OCR) of the four scientific crew members in the first Spacelab mission was measured during baseline-data-collection before and after the flight of SL-1. It was presumed that the modification of otolithic responses during spaceflight will be reflected in specific changes of the OCR-gain on the first days after recovery. The magnitude of OCR was determined analysing colour-transparencies of subjects right eyes that were produced in different positions of lateral body tilt. In general, one subject did not show any changes at all; three subjects exhibited a signif

Older studies of mammalian otolith physiology have focused mainly on sustained responses to low-frequency (<50 Hz) or maintained linear acceleration. So the otoliths have been regarded as accelerometers. Thus evidence of otolithic activation and high-precision phase locking to high-frequency sound and vibration appears to be very unusual. However, those results are exactly in accord with a substantial body of knowledge of otolith function in fish and frogs. It is likely that phase locking of otolith afferents to vibration is a general property of all vertebrates. This review examines the liter

The vestibular organ senses linear and rotational acceleration of the head during active and passive motion. These signals are necessary for bipedal locomotion, navigation, the coordination of eye and head movements in 3D space. The temporal dynamics of vestibular processing in cortical structures have hardly been studied in humans, let alone with natural stimulation. The aim was to investigate the cortical vestibular network related to natural otolith stimulation using a hexapod motion platform. We conducted two experiments, 1. to estimate the sources of the vestibular evoked potentials (Vest

The parabrachial and adjacent Kölliker-Fuse (PBN/KF) nuclei play a key role in relaying visceral afferent inputs to the hypothalamus and limbic system and are, thus, believed to participate in generating nausea and affective responses elicited by gastrointestinal (GI) signals. In addition, the PBN/KF region receives inputs from the vestibular system and likely mediates the malaise associated with motion sickness. However, previous studies have not considered whether GI and vestibular inputs converge on the same PBN/KF neurons, and if so, whether the GI signals alter the responses of the cells

The response of the vestibular system after acoustic neuroma surgery was investigated in nine patients. The otolith system was studied by means of ocular counterrolling, assessed by video oculography. Horizontal vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) function was tested by the sinusoidal harmonic acceleration test using electronystagmography. The results were compared with those obtained from a normal control population. The response to slow rotation tests was symmetric, but the gain was significantly reduced when compared to the normal population. Phase lag was significantly increased. No difference i

The pathoetiology of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is controversial. Particulate matter within the posterior semicircular canal has been identified intraoperatively in patients with BPPV but has also been reported in non-BPPV patients at the time of translabyrinthine surgery (Parnes LS, McClure JA. Thirty healthy volunteers were tested for an extended period of time (up to 4 hours) on modified parallel swings during a head-down tilt (-8 degrees) study. The pattern of motion sickness that developed in this situation was evaluated in terms of physiological parameters (electrocardiography, rheoencephalography, arterial pressure, respiration rate electrooculography, etc.), hormonal status, fluid-electrolyte balance, sensory function. The test subjects developed a vestibulo-hemodynamic syndrome that included vestibular disorders, spatial illusions, fluid displacement in the cranial direction,

Experiments on human spatial orientation were conducted on four crewmembers of Space Shuttle Spacelab Mission 1. This introductory paper presents the conceptual background of the project, the relationship among the experiments and their relevance to a "sensory reinterpretation hypothesis". Detailed experiment procedures and results are presented in the accompanying papers in this series. The overall findings are discussed in this article as they pertain to the following aspects of hypothesized sensory reinterpretation in weightlessness: utricular otolith afferent signals are reinterpreted as i

The auditory-cardiac interplay enables sound perception to modulate cardiac rhythm and homeostasis. However, its underlying regulatory mechanism and therapeutic potential remain largely underexplored, due to fundamental limitations in acoustic stimulation precision. Here we present an opto-mechano-cardiac coupling strategy that bypasses the propagation constraints of sound wave to enable precise acoustic modulation of cardiac function. Utilizing dynamically reconfigurable optical traps (1064 nm, 100 kHz refresh rate), we translated musical rhythms into programmable otolith oscillation patterns

A patient presenting with vertical diplopia along with ocular tilt reaction (OTR) due to peripheral vestibular dysfunction is a rare occurrence. OTR is an eye-head postural reaction consisting of head tilt, skew deviation, conjugated eye cyclotorsion, and alteration of vertical perception, and is thought to occur with central lesions, mainly brainstem lesions. Here, we report a case of a patient who was suffering from left acute peripheral cochleovestibular loss. He had profound deafness and absence of caloric response on the left side. No central lesion was observed on magnetic resonance imag

Larval siblings of cichlid fish (Oreochromis mossambicus) were subjected to hypergravity (hg; 3 g, 14 days) during development. Following the transfer to 1 g (i.e., stopping the centrifuge) they were separated into normally and kinetotically swimming individuals (the latter performed spinning movements). During hg, the animals were maintained in aquarium water containing alizarin-complexone (AC), a fluorescent calcium tracer. Densitometric measurements of AC uptake into inner ear otoliths (optical density of AC/micrometers2) revealed that the kinetotic individuals had incorporated significantl
