Otological complications associated with hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

The objective of the present study was to clarify the features of otological complications for hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) and the risk factors for these complications. We enrolled 1115 patients (776 males and 339 females; age 5-89 years) who underwent HBOT. All otological symptoms experienced during HBOT sessions were evaluated, and risk factors were analysed using multivariate logistic regression analysis. Otoscopic findings and interventions for otological complications were assessed in 58 symptomatic patients who visited the Otolaryngology Department. Otological symptoms were experien

Artificial intelligence to classify ear disease from otoscopy: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVES: To summarise the accuracy of artificial intelligence (AI) computer vision algorithms to classify ear disease from otoscopy. DESIGN: Systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS: Using the PRISMA guidelines, nine online databases were searched for articles that used AI computer vision algorithms developed from various methods (convolutional neural networks, artificial neural networks, support vector machines, decision trees and k-nearest neighbours) to classify otoscopic images. Diagnostic classes of interest: normal tympanic membrane, acute otitis media (AOM), otitis media with e

Primary or secondary otalgia-uncovering the mystery.

We describe two cases illustrating the diagnostic challenges of referred otalgia when otoscopic findings are normal. The first patient presented with a 5-month history of severe right ear pain unresponsive to prior treatment. Despite a normal otoscopic examination and a previously normal CT scan, MRI revealed extensive skull base inflammation. Subsequent surgical sampling confirmed Aspergillus, and the patient improved with targeted antifungal therapy. The second patient presented with acute left otalgia, dysphagia and tongue deviation. Otoscopy and CT imaging were unremarkable, but MRI demons

Correlation between micro-otoscopy, micropneumatoscopy and otoadmittance tympanometry.

The micro-otoscopic, audiometric and tympanometric findings were correlated in 204 ears seen in a Veterans Administration Hospital ear clinic. Otoscopy, audiometry and tympanometry were done during the same clinical visits. In most cases pneumo-otoscopy with the microscope also was performed. Because we were unable to standardize pressures, we found pneumo-otoscopy of limited value. The data in this series were analyzed from two different points of view to determine the accuracy of the tympanometer in detecting and identifying ear disease. First the otoscopic results were compared with the tym

Otitis media detection using tympanic membrane images with a novel multi-class machine learning algorithm.

BACKGROUND: Otitis media (OM) is the infection and inflammation of the mucous membrane covering the Eustachian with the airy cavities of the middle ear and temporal bone. OM is also one of the most common ailments. In clinical practice, the diagnosis of OM is carried out by visual inspection of otoscope images. This vulnerable process is subjective and error-prone. METHODS: In this study, a novel computer-aided decision support model based on the convolutional neural network (CNN) has been developed. To improve the generalized ability of the proposed model, a combination of the channel and sp

Natural History of Sensorineural Hearing Loss in Children With STRC Mutations.

INTRODUCTION: The most common genes responsible for autosomal recessive nonsyndromic hearing loss (AR-NSHL) are GJB2 and STRC. STRC mutations are associated with mild-to-moderate sensorineural (SNHL) hearing loss and a lack of progression. However, our institutional experience suggested otherwise, prompting this review. METHODS: A 10-year retrospective chart review was performed at a tertiary children's hospital after the University of Iowa added STRC to its OtoSCOPER panel in 2013. Subjects with positive OtoSCOPER results underwent audiologic review. Hearing progression was defined based on

Prevalence and characteristics of children with otitis media with effusion in Vietnam.

PURPOSE: Otitis media with effusion (OME) commonly occurs and persists in young children. It can cause hearing impairment and damage to the tympanic membrane without treatment. We aimed to determine the prevalence and association of Streptococcus pneumoniae in the nasopharynx of healthy children before the introduction of a pneumococcal conjugate vaccine. METHODS: In October 2016, nasopharyngeal swabs collection and otoscope examinations by an otolaryngologist were conducted in children aged less than 24 months in Nha Trang, Vietnam. OME was diagnosed as the presence of middle ear fluid using

Physical examination and clinical evaluation of the patient with otosclerosis.

A detailed history, otoscopic examination, and testing with tuning forks are essential to the diagnosis of otosclerosis. These steps, including a differential diagnosis to rule out those middle ear conditions that can masquerade as otosclerosis, can help the examining physician make the presumptive diagnosis of otosclerosis.

Evaluation of plasma fibronectine level as a probable indicator for tympanosclerosis.

OBJECTIVES: Wound healing, epithelial regrowth and collagen synthesis are very important factors in the repair of the traumatised tympanic membrane. The aim of the present study was to determine the role of plasma fibronectine in the aetiopathogenesis of tympanosclerosis. METHODS: This prospective study included 58 patients with and 49 without tympanosclerosis. No inflammation or trauma was noted in either patient group. All patients underwent otoscopic and otomicroscopic examination, and the degree of tympanosclerosis was graded from mild (stage I) to severe (stage III). Following otological
