Open knee surgery for the treatment of large symptomatic cartilage defects is routinely performed in the inpatient stay, where the patients are hospitalized for several days after surgery. BACKGROUND: The mortality due to cardiovascular diseases in bipolar patients is much higher than in the general population. It is unclear whether lithium treatment contributes to this cardiovascular morbidity.
METHODS: The cardiovascular risk factors in outpatients with bipolar disorder on monotherapy lithium were explored. The aim of this work was to describe the value hierarchy in paranoid schizophrenia and to compare it with healthy controls. 70 outpatients (35 males and 35 females) aged 38-46 and 70 matched healthy persons were examined using the Polish adaptation of "Value Survey". It was found out that there are significant differences and that the most important of them were safeness, social, moral, interpersonal and allocentric values; less important were personal, competence, individual and egocentric values.

The feasibility of computerized psychological testing was investigated in a sample of 452 consecutive psychiatric outpatients. Forty-six percent of the solicited patients agreed to participate in the computerized assessment. Tested patients were significantly younger and better educated than those who refused. Pleuritic chest pain is a frequent complaint in patients coming to the emergency room, but the proportion of such patients with pulmonary embolism is uncertain. In a prospective study, we evaluated the diagnostic outcomes in 173 consecutive patients who came to the emergency room with pleuritic chest pain. Serum chlorpropamide concentrations (s-CPA) were determined and related to clinical findings in 83 outpatients with maturity onset diabetes. The daily doses of CPA (mg/kg) varied six-fold, but s-CPA ranged 18-fold between the patients.
