BACKGROUND: Undernutrition and overnutrition have been considered separate challenges caused by the distinct factors in distinct settings. The double burden of malnutrition is defined as the coexistence of both undernutrition and overnutrition, which has now spread globally, especially in low- and middle-income countries. In Kenya, the double burden of malnutrition is present in the capital city but the situation in rural areas currently remains unknown. The aim of this study was therefore to analyze nutritional status in rural Kenya.
METHODS: Data from height and weight measurements conducte

Evidence suggests that low concentration perinatal exposure to environmental contaminants, such as organophosphate (OP) is associated with later life insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. The aim of this work was to investigate whether chronic maternal OP exposure exacerbates metabolic dysfunctions in early-overfed rats. During pregnancy and lactational periods, dams received OP by gavage. To induce neonatal overnutrition at postnatal day 3, pups were standardized to 9 or 3 per nest. At 90-days-old, glucose-insulin homeostasis and insulin release from pancreatic islets were analyzed. While b

OBJECTIVE: Under- and overnutrition are associated with a worse prognosis and constitute independent risk factors for morbidity and mortality. It is increasingly important to understand the factors that affect nutritional and metabolic statuses. The purpose of this study was to assess the relation between the pepsinogen I/II ratio and several biochemical markers.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed in 1985 subjects who underwent a health screening test. Subjects had no medications for hyperuricemia, dyslipidemia, diabetes mellitus, or hypertension. All subjects were classified into

Nearly 20 years ago, it was discovered that low birthweight was associated with an increased risk of adult diabetes and cardiovascular disease (CVD). This led to the hypothesis that exposure to undernutrition in early life increases an individual's vulnerability to these disorders, by 'programming' permanent metabolic changes. Implicit in the programming hypothesis is that improving the nutrition of girls and women could prevent common chronic diseases in future generations. Research in India has shown that low birthweight children have increased CVD risk factors, and a unique birth cohort in

BACKGROUND: Overnutrition increases the risk of diabetes. Evidence on the causal impact of overnutrition on diabetes is scarce for India. Considering a representative sample from India, this study examines the causal effect of a rise in the Body Mass Index (BMI) of an individual on the likelihood of being diabetic while addressing the issue of unobserved endogeneity between overnutrition and diabetes.
METHODS: The study considers individual level data from Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) of India, namely, National Family Health Survey (NFHS) for the year 2015-16. The NFHS is a large-scal

Young beef bulls are often fed high-energy diets to maximize postweaning growth; however, overnutrition has been associated with decreased semen quality. Seminal plasma has been shown to prime the uterus for early pregnancy events in mammalian species; thus, alterations in this response caused by overnutrition could be detrimental or beneficial. The present study evaluated the impact of seminal plasma from bulls exposed to overnutrition on the transcriptome of endometrial epithelial cells in vitro. Yearling half-sibling beef bulls (n = 20) were stratified by age, body weight, and body conditio

Maternal overnutrition or associated complications putatively mediate the obesogenic effects of perinatal high-fat diet on developing offspring. Here, we tested the hypothesis that a Western diet developmental environment increases adiposity not only in male offspring from obesity-prone (DIO) mothers, but also in those from obesity-resistant (DR) dams, implicating a deleterious role for the Western diet per se. Selectively bred DIO and DR female rats were fed chow (17% kcal fat) or Western diet (32%) for 54 days before mating and, thereafter, through weaning. As intended, despite chow-like cal

Double burden of malnutrition (DBMN), the coexistence of under- and overnutrition in the same population, is an emerging public health concern in developing countries, including Thailand. This paper aims to review the maternal and child nutrition situation and trends as the country moved from a low-income to a middle-income country, using data from large scale national surveys. Protein-energy malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies predominantly affected mothers and children prior to the 1980s. The situation greatly improved during the 1980s- 1990s, with the implementation of multi-sectora

Even in the 21st century, undernutrition is a challenge to be overcome. In the year 2009, 1.02 billion people were reported as food insecure and 180 million children were undernourished. Food insecurity and undernutrition are more than a lack of food energy: they are not reflected countrywide by prevalence means; they are mostly not permanent but seasonal; they are mostly not caused by insufficient amounts of food being produced; and they first affect parents and later children. Food insecurity and undernutrition often manifest themselves as micronutrient deficiency. While undernutrition is st

Overnutrition during critical developmental periods is suggested to be a risk factor for obesity and associated metabolic disorders in later life. Underlying mechanisms are unknown. Neuropeptides are essentially involved in the central nervous regulation of body weight. For instance, hypothalamic galanin (GAL) is a stimulator of food intake and body weight gain. To investigate long-term consequences of early postnatal overfeeding, the normal litter size of Wistar rats (n=10; controls) was reduced from day 3 to day 21 of life to only 3 pups per mother (small litters, SL; overnutrition). Through

Middle childhood and early adolescence have received disproportionately low levels of scientific attention relative to other life stages, especially as related to nutrition and health. This is partly due to the justified emphasis on the first 1000 days of life, and the idea that early deficits and consequences may not be fully reversible. In addition, these stages of life may superficially appear less "eventful" than infancy or late adolescence. Finally, there has been historical ambiguity and inconsistency in terminology, depending on whether viewing "childhood" through physiologic, social, l

The triple burden of malnutrition (undernutrition, overnutrition and micronutrient deficiency) or TBM among under-five (U5) children is an increasingly recognised public health challenge. A literature search was conducted to identify studies published from 1976 to 2022, which had focused on information regarding different factors of child malnutrition. The findings were analysed and contextualised from policy and programmatic perspective. There is a high burden of various forms of malnutrition in India. Insufficient dietary intake and illnesses are immediate and most common causes of triple bu

Historically, several studies showed an association between malnutrition in critically ill patients and poor outcomes. As a result, the standard practice had been to provide patients with full nutrition as soon as possible to eliminate malnutrition, improve outcomes, and reduce mortality. However, several studies recently suggested that providing more calories and protein is not better in critical illness and may be harmful in certain disease states. This literature review and editorial describe the harms of maximal feeding early in critical illness.

Malnutrition is a major problem in developing countries, and obesity and eating disorders are increasingly common in developing as well as developed countries. The reproductive axis is closely linked to nutritional status, especially undernutrition in the female, and inhibitory pathways involving detectors in the hind brain suppress ovulation in subjects with weight loss. Recovery may occur after minimal reacquisition of weight because energy balance is more important than body fat mass. Anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa affect up to 5% of women of reproductive age causing amenorrhoea, infe

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is one of the most common liver diseases worldwide. Although the involvement of chronic overnutrition, systemic inflammation, and insulin resistance in the development of NAFLD is well-established, however, the associations among these remain to be elucidated. Several studies have reported that chronic overnutrition, such as excessive consumption of fats (high-fat diet, HFD), can cause insulin resistance and inflammation. However, the mechanisms by which HFD exerts inflammation and thereby promotes insulin resistance and intrahepatic fat accumulation re

Despite enormous progress in managing blood glucose levels, pregnancy in women with type 1 diabetes still carries risks for the growing fetus. While, previously, fetal undergrowth was not uncommon in these women, with improved maternal glycaemic control we now see an increased prevalence of fetal overgrowth. Besides short-term implications, offspring of women with type 1 diabetes are more likely to become obese and to develop diabetes and features of the metabolic syndrome. Here, we argue that the increase in birthweight is paradoxically related to improved glycaemic control in the pre- and pe

Overnutrition is associated with the activation of inflammatory pathways in metabolically linked organs and an early hypothalamic inflammation is now known to disrupt the central control of metabolic function. Because we demonstrated that fatty acids (FA) target the pituitary and affect gonadotropin synthesis, we asked whether overnutrition induces pituitary inflammation that may contribute to obesity-associated disorders in the control of reproduction. We analyzed pituitary inflammation and hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular axis in male rats fed a short- (4 weeks) or long-term (20 weeks) high

The placenta and the developing blood-brain barrier (BBB) function as two complementary fetal protective interfaces ensuring nutrient delivery at the same time as limiting fetal brain xenobiotic overexposure. In this review, we integrate evidence from animal and human studies demonstrating that the spectrum of maternal malnutrition, from undernutrition/underweight to overnutrition/obesity, profoundly remodels placental morphology and compromises placental barrier efficiency. Maternal undernutrition reduces placental exchange surface area, impairs villous vascular development and alters syncyti
