PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To summarize and critically interpret new evidence (from the last 12-18 months) on the associations between obesity and breathlessness, including epidemiology, physiological mechanisms, diagnostic challenges, and treatment approaches.
RECENT FINDINGS: Multiple large cohorts confirm that obesity is one of the strongest independent predictors of exertional breathlessness. Recent work has expanded the understanding of mechanical, metabolic, and ventilatory contributors to breathlessness in obesity. Novel spirometric and oscillometric data clarify small airway dysfunction and d

General practice is a unique setting to identify overweight and obesity in children. General Practitioners (GPs) can play an important role to signal and managing overweight and obesity in children. However, GPs experience various barriers such as limited time, uncertainty about the parents' reaction and there are ambiguities about the referral options. GPs emphasized that they are in need of supportive tools to fulfill this role. Parents indicate that they are open to a conversation with the GP about their child's weight, provided that the GP is honest and respectful. In co-creation with GPs

BACKGROUND: Obesity and urolithiasis are both prevalent conditions that have an impact on the healthcare system. The ureteric diameter and accessibility play a crucial role in the management of urolithiasis in both overweight and normal weight patients. Studies have shown that obesity can lead to changes in ureter diameter where excessive body fat can exert pressure on the kidneys, causing them to enlarge in size and this enlargement can result in a compression of the adjacent structures, including the ureter. The aim of this study is to assess the incidence of intraoperative challenges faced

Obesity has become a serious medical condition where many factors can contribute to excess weight gain. The most common type of childhood obesity is simple obesity, which is due to gene-obesogenic environment interaction. Only a minority are due to pathological causes. Secondary causes of obesity, while less common, include these: genetic syndromes, drug-related obesity, as well as endocrine disorders (hypothyroidism, Cushing's syndrome, growth hormone deficiency, hypogonadism, pseudohypoparathyroidism type Ia, insulinoma, hypothalamic obesity and polycystic ovary syndrome). Given that some co

Obesity is a global health problem with a broad set of comorbidities, such as malnutrition, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, systemic hypertension, heart failure, and kidney failure. This review describes recent findings of neuroimaging and two studies of cell density regarding the roles of overnutrition-induced hypothalamic inflammation in neurodegeneration. These studies provided consistent evidence of smaller cortical thickness or reduction in the gray matter volume in people with overweight and obesity; however, the investigated brain regions varied across the studies. In general, bilateral f

BACKGROUND: Obesity has reached epidemic proportions around the world. Effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives may be related to metabolic changes in obesity or to greater body mass or body fat. Hormonal contraceptives include oral contraceptives (OCs), injectables, implants, hormonal intrauterine contraception (IUC), the transdermal patch, and the vaginal ring. Given the prevalence of overweight and obesity, the public health impact of any effect on contraceptive efficacy could be substantial.
OBJECTIVES: To examine the effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives in preventing pregnancy among

Dyslipidemia often affects overweight and obese adolescents and can be present along with hypertension, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and polycystic ovarian syndrome. This article is the third of six discussing the comorbidities of childhood obesity and will focus on the individual parts of the lipid profile and the impact of dyslipidemia on the heart and other body systems. Since few pharmacologic therapies are approved to treat dyslipidemia in children and adolescents younger than 18, treatment consists of lifestyle changes that can be supported and modeled by the school nurse. Recent statistics indicate that over one-third of college students are currently overweight or obese, however, the impact of weight in this population from academic and psychiatric perspectives is not fully understood. This study sought to examine the prevalence of overweight and obesity in college students and its association with stress, mental health disorders and academic achievement. A total of 1765 students completed the College Student Computer User Survey (CSCUS) online at a large Midwestern United States University. Responders were classified by weight as normal, overweight or obese b
