Foraging behavior and age affect maternal transfer of mercury to northern elephant seal pups.

Deep ocean foraging northern elephant seals (Mirounga angustirostris) consume fish and squid in remote depths of the North Pacific Ocean. Contaminants bioaccumulated from prey are subsequently transferred by adult females to pups during gestation and lactation, linking pups to mercury contamination in mesopelagic food webs (200-1000 m depths). Maternal transfer of mercury to developing seal pups was related to maternal mercury contamination and was strongly correlated with maternal foraging behavior (biotelemetry and isotopes). Mercury concentrations in lanugo (hair grown in utero) were among

Schistosomus Reflexus Syndrome in Olive Ridley Sea Turtles ( Lepidochelys olivacea).

The olive ridley sea turtle ( Lepidochelys olivacea), considered the most abundant sea turtle species, is listed as vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List. The most important nesting areas are located in the Eastern Pacific, and congenital malformations have been previously reported in this species. The present study was conducted in a single population at El Verde beach, one of the most important nesting beaches for the species in the northwestern Mexican Pacific. The study was based on embryos that had been incubated in a controlled environment. Schistosomu

Serologic Investigation of Leptospira spp., Sarcocystis neurona, and Toxoplasma gondii in Guadalupe Fur Seals (Arctocephalus townsendi) from Guadalupe Island, Mexico.

The Guadalupe fur seal (GFS; Arctocephalus townsendi) is susceptible to the ecologic impacts of anomalous ocean warming events, which have led to prey scarcity that, in turn, affects its feeding habits, nutritional condition, and survival at Guadalupe Island, Mexico. Concurrently, ocean warming has also caused increased outbreaks of zoonotic diseases in North Pacific pinnipeds. This study assessed the exposure to zoonotic disease agents (Leptospira spp., Sarcocystis neurona, and Toxoplasma gondii) in GFS on Guadalupe Island (2016, 2017, and 2020), during a period of persistent ocean warming an

Description of a new genus of Chromodorididae with a taxonomic review of Neptunazurea kempfi (Ev. Marcus, 1971) comb. nov. (Mollusca, Gastropoda, Nudibranchia).

Recent molecular phylogenies have shown the polyphyly of widespread genera within the Chromodorididae. In this context, the genus Felimare was resurrected to include Eastern Pacific, Atlantic, and Mediterranean species previously included in Hypselodoris, plus Mexichromis porterae (Cockerell, 1901) and Mexichromis kempfi (Ev. Marcus, 1971). The somewhat controversial genus Felimare currently includes species with different external, radular, and jaw shapes as well as different reproductive morphologies, resulting in the absence of a clear diagnosis for the genus. Here, we advance the systemati

Local and non-local energy transfers in eddy-mean flow interactions along the Indonesian throughflow.

How local energy conversion and non-local redistribution jointly shape eddy activity along the Indonesian Throughflow (ITF) remains unclear. Using long-term, eddy-resolving ocean model output, we diagnose exchanges among mean and eddy kinetic and available potential energy along the ITF and its adjacent basins. The results reveal a marked change in the dominant energy pathway. At the Pacific entrance and along the western ITF, eddies gain energy primarily through barotropic conversion associated with the sheared mean current. Farther downstream, baroclinic conversion becomes more prominent nea

Mercury isotopes identify near-surface marine mercury in deep-sea trench biota.

Mercury isotopic compositions of amphipods and snailfish from deep-sea trenches reveal information on the sources and transformations of mercury in the deep oceans. Evidence for methyl-mercury subjected to photochemical degradation in the photic zone is provided by odd-mass independent isotope values (Δ199Hg) in amphipods from the Kermadec Trench, which average 1.57‰ (±0.14, n = 12, SD), and amphipods from the Mariana Trench, which average 1.49‰ (±0.28, n = 13). These values are close to the average value of 1.48‰ (±0.34, n = 10) for methyl-mercury in fish that feed at ∼500-m depth in the cent

Origins and relationships of endemic Hawaiian sabre-toothed blennies in the genus Plagiotremus (Blennioidei: Blenniidae).

The sabre-toothed blennies (tribe Nemophini) are renowned for vivid colouration and several evolutionary adaptations, including a venom that resembles opioids in both chemistry and function. The genus Plagiotremus contains 11 species distributed across the Indo-Pacific and Red Sea, including two nominal species endemic to Hawai'i. Here, we use mitochondrial COI and cytb in addition to select morphological characters to examine the relationships of Hawaiian endemics to their widely distributed sister species, along with their phylogeography and evolutionary relationships above and below the spe

Short communication: first report of nematodes parasitizing the four-eyed-fish, Anableps anableps (Pisces, Cyprinodontiformes).

The genus Anableps is composed of species Anableps anableps, Anableps dowi, and Anableps microlepis. These fishes are tropical and usually live on the surface of brackish water, being popularly known as four-eyed-fishes due to the presence of prominent eyes and a pupil split horizontally. A. anableps and A. microlepis are considered as sister species that live in sympatry in South America. A. dowi, however, is restricted to the Pacific Ocean (Central America) and is considered the most primitive species of this genus. The aims of this study were to investigate the presence of endoparasites in

Lacaziosis-like disease among bottlenose dolphins Tursiops truncatus photographed in Golfo Dulce, Costa Rica.

Lacaziosis (also known as lobomycosis) is a chronic dermal disease caused by the fungal agent Lacazia loboi, which affects both humans and dolphins. Photographic data have been used to identify lacaziosis-like disease (LLD) among dolphins in the waters of North and South America, and here we report LLD in bottlenose dolphins Tursiops truncatus off the coast of Costa Rica, the first reporting in Central American waters. During the periods of 1991 to 1992 and 2010 to 2011, 3 research teams conducted separate dolphin surveys in the Pacific tropical fiord Golfo Dulce, and each documented skin lesi

Humpback whale song on the Southern Ocean feeding grounds: implications for cultural transmission.

Male humpback whales produce a long, complex, and stereotyped song on low-latitude breeding grounds; they also sing while migrating to and from these locations, and occasionally in high-latitude summer feeding areas. All males in a population sing the current version of the constantly evolving display and, within an ocean basin, populations sing similar songs; however, this sharing can be complex. In the western and central South Pacific region there is repeated cultural transmission of song types from eastern Australia to other populations eastward. Song sharing is hypothesized to occur throu

Spinal anaesthesia for caesarean section in the Solomon Islands.

Results were kept on 43 spinal anaesthetics performed for caesarean section in the Solomon Islands, a developing tropical country in the Pacific Ocean. A 25-gauge Quincke needle was used and either 2.5 ml of heavy bupivacaine 0.5% or 2.0-2.5 ml of plain bupivacaine 0.5% were injected. Hypotension down to 85 mmHg occurred in four patients and there were no spinal headaches. Five patients had to be given a general anaesthetic. We recommend this technique to other doctors working in the Pacific Islands.

Two new species of Tetragonocephalum (Cestoda: Lecanicephalidea) from Pastinachus sephen (Myliobatiformes: Dasyatidae) from the Gulf of Oman.

In the present study two new species of Tetragonocephalum Shipley et Hornell, 1905, T. mackenziei sp. n. and T. kazemii sp. n., are described from the spiral intestine of the cowtail stingray, Pastinachus sephen (Forsskål), from the northern coast of the Gulf of Oman. Tetragonocephalum mackenziei is distinguished from the 16 other valid species of Tetragonocephalum by a unique combination of characteristics, i.e. sperm-filled seminal receptacle in immature proglottids, body length (7.7-17.5 mm), body width (213-288 µm), number of proglottids (34-49), number of testes (10-14), size of scolex (2

Trans-Arctic dispersals and the evolution of a circumpolar marine fish species complex, the capelin (Mallotus villosus).

Trans-Arctic dispersals and population and range expansions during the Pleistocene enhanced opportunities for evolutionary diversification and contributed to the process of speciation within the capelin, a northern marine-fish complex exhibiting a circumpolar distribution. Capelin is composed of four highly divergent and geographically discrete mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) clades (609 bp; cytochrome b). Two clades occur in the North Atlantic, one associated with Canadian Atlantic waters, including Hudson Bay, and the second distributed from West Greenland to the Barents Sea. Two additional clades

Description of three new species of Echinobothrium (Cestoda: Diphyllidea) from Indo-Pacific elasmobranchs of the genus Glaucostegus (Rajiformes: Rhinobatidae).

Three new species of diphyllidean cestodes are described from rhinobatid elasmobranchs of the genus Glaucostegus from the Indian and Pacific Oceans. All 3 new species have 11 apical hooks (6 type-A and 5 type-B hooks) and, therefore, differ in this feature from all but 5 of the 39 valid species of Echinobothrium. In addition, Echinobothrium tetabuanense n. sp. from Glaucostegus cf. typus in the Sulu Sea, Borneo differs from all of its congeners in the number and arrangement of hooklets, number of spines on the cephalic peduncle, and the number and distribution of testes. Methylmercury produced in upper oceans accumulates in deep Mariana Trench fauna.

Monomethylmercury (MMHg) is a potent toxin that bioaccumulates and magnifies in marine food webs. Recent studies show abundant methylated Hg in deep oceans (>1000 m), yet its origin remains uncertain. Here we measured Hg isotope compositions in fauna and surface sediments from the Mariana Trench. The trench fauna at 7000-11000 m depth all have substantially positive mass-independent fractionation of odd Hg isotopes (odd-MIF), which can be generated only in the photic zone via MMHg photo-degradation. Given the identical odd-MIF in trench fauna and North Pacific upper ocean (<1000 m) biota MMHg,

The South Atlantic Dipole via multichannel singular spectrum analysis.

This study analyzes coupled atmosphere-ocean variability in the South Atlantic Ocean. To do so, we characterize the spatio-temporal variability of annual mean sea-surface temperature (SST) and sea-level pressure (SLP) using Multichannel Singular Spectrum Analysis (M-SSA). We applied M-SSA to ERA5 reanalysis data (1959-2022) of South Atlantic SST and SLP, both individually and jointly, and identified a nonlinear trend, as well as two climate oscillations. The leading oscillation, with a period of 13 years, consists of a basin-wide southwest-northeast dipole and is observed both in the individua

Short communication: Divergent life histories link thermal tolerance variation across Pacific salmon species and populations.

Divergent life histories among organisms are linked to variations in thermal response. Although there have been extensive studies on interpopulation variations in thermal tolerance, the ecological relevance of the tolerance to life history remains largely unexplored. We compared critical thermal maximum (CTmax) among two Pacific salmon species with different freshwater life histories, masu salmon (Oncorhynchus masou) and chum salmon (O. keta), across two local Japanese populations. CTmax was higher for masu salmon fry (26.9 °C) than for chum salmon fry (26.1 °C). Although the mean CTmax differ
