Patient Perception of Acute Pain Management: Data from Three Tertiary Care Hospitals.

Introduction. The primary objectives of this study were to assess patients' description of their acute pain intensity; patients' attitude towards their pain management during hospitalization; and their overall satisfaction with pain treatment. Methodology. A cross-sectional questionnaire-based study was conducted between October 2014 and March 2015 in three medical centers in Lebanon. All participants' responses were reported using descriptive statistics. The association between categorical variables was evaluated using Pearson χ2 test or Fisher's exact test where the expected cell count was <

Neonatal ventral hippocampal lesions modify pain perception and evoked potentials in rats.

This work concerns the debate surrounding the modified pain reactivity of patients with schizophrenia and other possible perceptive distortions. Rats with a neonatal ventral hippocampal lesion (NVHL) were used to model the neuro-developmental aspect of schizophrenia, and their reactivity to various stimuli was evaluated. The results could also help understand sensory deficits in other neuro-developmental disorders. Behavioural reactions to graduated painful thermal and mechanical stimuli were observed, and evoked potential responsiveness to tactile, visual and acoustic non-painful stimuli was

Pressure pain perception at the injured foot: the impact of diabetic neuropathy.

BACKGROUND: At feet with painless diabetic neuropathy (PDN) and a healed fracture (quiescent Charcot-foot), cutaneous pressure pain perception threshold (CPPPT) is elevated beyond the range of measurement, whereas deep pressure pain perception threshold (DPPPT) may be normal. It is unknown, how these thresholds behave under the conditions of a foot injury. We therefore measured CPPPT and DPPPT in the vicinity of a unilateral active foot injury. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 18 diabetic patients with PDN and plantar injury, partly involving the skeleton (Wagner grade I-II ulcer), 10 non-neuropathic su

Perception for ischemic pain shows similarities in adjustment disorder and major depression.

We recently described an increase of pain thresholds and tolerances for thermal and electrical pain in patients suffering from adjustment disorder (AD). Furthermore, we presented evidence that pain perception in major depressive disorder (MDD) depends on pain modality, with thresholds for ischemic pain being decreased compared to increased thermal and electrical pain thresholds. Here, we investigated perception of experimentally induced ischemic pain in 15 patients suffering from AD (subtype with depressive symptoms) and controls matched for age and sex in order to examine whether a similar pa

Psychological factors associated with perception of experimental pain in vulvar vestibulitis syndrome.

This study assessed the association between pain perception and psychological variables in women with vulvar vestibulitis syndrome (VVS) by comparing 28 VVS women with 50 healthy women. We assessed non genital systemic pain perception with quantitative sensory testing by administering experimental pain stimuli to the forearm. The VVS women demonstrated a lower pain threshold and a higher magnitude estimation of pain, combined with a higher trait anxiety, increased somatization, and a lower body image. Among the VVS women, nonvaginal pain catastrophizing was significantly related to reported pa

Muscle pain perception and sympathetic nerve activity to exercise during opioid modulation.

The purpose of this experiment was to examine the effects of the endogenous opioid system on forearm muscle pain and muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) during dynamic fatiguing exercise. Twelve college-age men (24 +/- 4 yr) performed graded (1-min stages; 30 contractions/min) handgrip to fatigue 1 h after the ingestion of either 60 mg codeine, 50 mg naltrexone, or placebo. Pain (0-10 scale) and exertion (0-10 and 6-20 scales) intensities were measured during the last 15 s of each minute of exercise and every 15 s during recovery. MSNA was measured continuously from the peroneal nerve in

Symptoms and visceral perception in patients with pain-predominant irritable bowel syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Abdominal pain is thought to be a hallmark of the irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), although currently used symptom criteria do not differentiate between abdominal pain and discomfort. By focusing on viscerosensory symptoms, we sought to determine: 1) which type of symptoms are most commonly reported by IBS patients, and 2) whether patients who report pain as their most bothersome symptom differ in clinical, psychological, and physiological characteristics. METHODS: A total of 443 consecutive new patient referrals to a tertiary referral center for functional gastrointestinal disorder

Examination of the Relationship Between Pain Intensity, Pain Perceptions, and Kinesiophobia in Patients with Non-Specific Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain.

Chronic musculoskeletal pain negatively affects patients' quality of life, and pain perceptions may significantly influence rehabilitation outcomes. This study investigated the relationships among pain intensity, pain perceptions, and kinesiophobia in individuals with chronic musculoskeletal pain. No previous studies have examined these variables in combination. A cross-sectional observational study was conducted with 37 participants with non-specific chronic musculoskeletal pain for at least 6 months, affecting the neck (n = 8), lower back (n = 18), upper limbs (n = 5), lower limbs (n = 5), o

Associations between negative symptoms and thermal pain perception in bipolar I disorder.

BACKGROUND: There is emerging evidence that negative symptoms are a source of functional impairment for individuals with bipolar I disorder (BD). Patients with BD may also demonstrate notable changes in the perception of pain. The objective of this preliminary study was to explore potential associations between negative symptom severity and pain perception (measured with quantitative sensory testing (QST)) in BD as well as identify neurobiological correlates of these two domains. RESULTS: In patients with BD (N = 24, 30.3 ± 9.4 years of age), the Clinical Assessment Interview for Negative Sym

Nonlinear acoustic phenomena affect the perception of pain in human baby cries.

What makes the painful cries of human babies so difficult to ignore? Vocal traits known as 'nonlinear phenomena' are prime candidates. These acoustic irregularities are common in babies' cries and are typically associated with high levels of distress or pain. Despite the vital importance of cries for a baby's survival, how these nonlinear phenomena drive pain perception in adult listeners has not previously been systematically investigated. Here, by combining acoustic analyses of cries recorded in different contexts with playback experiments using natural and synthetic cries, we show that baby

Crying does not alleviate acute pain perception: Evidence from an experimental study.

BACKGROUND: Whereas previous studies revealed positive effects of emotional expressions such as swearing and laughing on acute pain, systematic research on the effects of crying on pain is missing. The rationale for the current study is that either a mere emotional distraction or changes in oxytocin and opioid levels represent a mechanism through which crying modulates pain, with the timing of mood changes as crucial information for distinguishing between potential mechanisms. METHODS: In two studies, we exposed participants (Study 1: n = 57; Study 2: n = 70) to a sad movie and measured their

Altered spontaneous cortical activity predicts pain perception in individuals with cerebral palsy.

Cerebral palsy is the most common paediatric neurological disorder and results in extensive impairment to the sensorimotor system. However, these individuals also experience increased pain perception, resulting in decreased quality of life. In the present study, we utilized magnetoencephalographic brain imaging to examine whether alterations in spontaneous neural activity predict the level of pain experienced in a cohort of 38 individuals with spastic diplegic cerebral palsy and 67 neurotypical controls. Participants completed 5 min of an eyes closed resting-state paradigm while undergoing a m

The cardinal exercise stopper: Muscle fatigue, muscle pain or perception of effort?

The capacity to sustain high-intensity aerobic exercise is essential for endurance performance. Therefore, it is important to understand what is the factor limiting time to exhaustion (TTE) in healthy and fit adults. In Study 1, maximal voluntary cycling power (MVCP) was measured in 11 volunteers before and immediately after a high-intensity TTE test on cycle ergometer. Cadence was 60 rpm in both the MVCP and TTE tests. Despite a 35% loss in MVCP, power produced during the final MVCP test (mean ± SD 469 ± 111 W) was significantly higher than the power required by the TTE test (269 ± 55 W) (P <

Total Sleep Deprivation and Pain Perception during Cold Noxious Stimuli in Humans.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: A substantial portion of the population suffers from chronic pain leading to significant health care costs and lost productivity. Loss of sleep duration and quality are widely reported in patients suffering from a variety of acute or chronic pain conditions. Conversely, sleep loss has been known to elevate pain perception; thus a potential bi-directional relationship exists between sleep deprivation and pain. To date, the majority of studies examining the relationship between experimentally induced pain and sleep loss have focused on the measurement of pain threshold. Addi
