Hyaline-cell pleomorphic adenoma. Diagnosis by fine needle aspiration biopsy.

The cytologic, histologic, immunohistochemical and ultrastructural characteristics are presented of a case of hyaline-cell pleomorphic adenoma of the soft palate diagnosed by aspiration biopsy. Hyaline cells are commonly found in pleomorphic adenomas of minor salivary gland origin. The lack of cohesiveness of the hyaline cells makes them readily amenable to sampling by fine needle aspiration biopsy. When identified in a neoplasm, these cells are characteristic, and probably diagnostic, of a mixed tumor.

C-kit expression in canine mucosal melanomas.

The c-kit receptor is responsible for transmission of promigration signals to melanocytes; its downregulation may be involved in malignant progression of human melanocytic neoplasms. Expression of this receptor has not been examined in normal or neoplastic melanocytes from dogs. In this study, 14 benign dermal and 61 malignant mucosal melanocytic tumors were examined for c-kit (KIT) expression. Sites of the mucosal melanomas were gingiva (not further specified; n = 30), buccal gingiva (n = 6), soft palate (n = 4), hard palate (n = 5), tongue (n = 7), lip (n = 6), and conjunctiva (n = 3). Pleomorphic Adenoma of the Soft Palate With Indeterminate Imaging and Nondiagnostic Fine-Needle Aspiration Cytology: A Case Report.

Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common benign salivary gland neoplasm and may arise from the minor salivary glands of the palate. Palatal masses can resemble inflammatory, infectious, or other neoplastic lesions, and fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) may be nondiagnostic. A 35-year-old woman presented with a painless, gradually enlarging swelling of the left soft palate of three months' duration. Examination revealed a smooth, firm, non-tender, non-ulcerated submucosal mass measuring approximately 3 × 2 cm and extending toward the left tonsillar fossa. Contrast-enhanced computed tomograph

Glomus tumour of the hard palate: case report and review.

Glomus tumours are usually small benign neoplasms that occur in the dermis or subcutaneous tissues of the extremities. They are rare in the oral cavity, only 18 cases having been reported in the medical journals to our knowledge. They arise from the epithelioid glomus cells that normally reside in the stratum retinaculare corii of the skin and are concerned with temperature regulation. We report the clinical, morphological and immunohistochemical features of a case of glomus tumour of the hard palate.

Clear-cell carcinoma of the soft palate: a case with atypical presentation and long-term follow-up: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Clear-cell carcinoma, a rare malignancy of the minor salivary gland of the soft palate, is diagnostically challenging neoplasm due to its rarity and overlapping features with other neoplasms. We report a case of atypical presentation, diagnostic challenges, and long-term follow-up post-surgical resection of the tumor, which adds valuable insights to literature on this rare malignancy. CASE PRESENTATION: A 34-years-old Pakistani female came to the hospital with a 2 × 2 cm ulcerative lesion of soft palate. The lesion had no active bleeding and any associated discharge. However, duri

Sentinel lymph node biopsy in adenocarcinoma of minor salivary gland.

Adenocarcinoma of the minor salivary gland (MSG) is a rare neoplasm. It represents about 2% of all MSG malignant tumours. It is more common in the palate and in females. This tumour occurs in a mean age of sixty and its mean size at presentation is 1.5cm. Microscopically, the neoplasms classified as adenocarcinoma not otherwise specified (NOS) are a histologically heterogeneous group: they vary from highly anaplastic adenocarcinoma to moderate and well-differentiated lesions. This report describes a case of adenocarcinoma of MSG occurring in the buccal mucosa of a 24-year-old male. The patient

Oral soft tissue malignancies in Ibadan, Nigeria.

Eighty-nine primary malignant neoplasms of the oral and oro-pharyngeal tissues excluding bone and salivary gland tissue were studied over a period of 21 years. They constituted 0.4% of the total number of neoplasms seen at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, over that period and contribute only a small proportion, in contrast to the widely held view that oral tumours are very common in Africa. Squamous cell carcinoma was the commonest type of lesion seen and the commonly affected sites were palate, gum (gingiva), tongue, lip and floor of mouth, in that order. The incidental overall male:f

Clear cell carcinoma, not otherwise specified, of salivary glands: a clinicopathologic study of 4 cases and review of the literature.

Clear cell carcinoma, not otherwise specified (CCC-NOS), is a recently described rare malignant salivary neoplasm. We report the clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical features of 4 cases. The results were then analyzed collectively with the approximate 60 cases of CCC-NOS reported in the English-language literature to define the characteristics of this unusual neoplasm. Combining our cases with those in the literature, a total of 66 cases, confirms that CCC-NOS is a low-grade malignant neoplasm with distinctive clinical and pathologic features. It arises primarily in the minor salivary gla

Defining objective morphometric thresholds for the diagnosis of adenomatoid hyperplasia of minor salivary glands.

OBJECTIVE: Adenomatoid hyperplasia (AH) of minor salivary glands is a benign lesion that clinically mimics salivary gland neoplasms. Histopathologic diagnosis currently relies primarily on qualitative assessment, as objective quantitative criteria and baseline morphometric reference values for normal minor salivary glands have not been formally established. This study aimed to explore objective histomorphometric parameters for the diagnosis of AH and to characterize quantitative reference ranges for normal minor salivary glands. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective controlled clinico-pathologic stud

Extranodal NK/T Cell Lymphoma, Nasal Type with Palatal Involvement: A Rare Case Report and Literature Review.

T-cell lymphomas are infrequently encountered in the head and neck area, with the most common subtype being Extranodal NK/T cell lymphoma, nasal type (ENKTL-NT). ENKTL-NT shows a predilection for midline facial structures presenting with ulcerative destructive lesions, whereas palatal involvement is one of the most prominent signs from the oral cavity. Herein, we describe a case of a 76-year-old Greek man with nasal obstruction and an extensive painful necrotic ulcer with ragged borders on the left distal portion of the soft palate and palatine tonsil of 4-months duration. Basal cell adenoma arising in a minor salivary gland of the palate.

BACKGROUND: Basal cell adenoma is a benign neoplasm of the salivary glands. This tumor usually arises in the major glands, with the parotid being the most frequent site of occurrence, while it is rare in the minor salivary glands. We report a case of basal cell adenoma of a minor salivary gland on the palate. CASE: The patient was a 68-year-old man. Intraoral examination revealed a mass measuring 20 × 20 mm that was elastic-hard, dark violet, non-ulcerated, and covered the normal mucosa. [Parapharyngeal space lesions: with a reference to biopsy].

We received seven cases of parapharyngeal space lesions and discussed on necessity of biopsy. Tumors originating in the parapharyngeal space were represented by parotid pleomorphic adenomas which showed bulging of soft palate and tonsillar fossa, and benign neurogenic tumors which showed bulging of the lateral wall of the meso-pharynx. In these cases, preoperative biopsy was not necessary unless the lesion was suspected, of malignancy by CT, MRI and so on. In the case of bulging of soft palate and tonsillar fossa, if CT or MRI finding shows that the tumor is localized in the median portion of

Unusual co-occurrence of hypertrophic inferior olivary degeneration with infratentorial cavernomatosis and orbital cavernous hemangioma.

Hypertrophic olivary degeneration (HOD) is a rare condition resulting from a lesion in the Guillain-Mollaret triangle (GMT), causing transsynaptic degeneration and hypertrophy of the inferior olivary nucleus (ION). The GMT is composed of the dentate nucleus, red nucleus, and ION, and is commonly affected by ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes, vascular malformations, neoplasms, or surgical trauma. Cavernomas are a frequent type of cerebral vascular malformation associated with HOD, while orbital cavernous hemangiomas are another rare vascular malformation. The association of these two malformatio

Trans-antral Temporal Flap to Reconstruct Palatal Defects in Dentate Patients - A Technical Note.

The temporalis myofascial flap (TMF) is a reliable option for midfacial defect reconstruction, benefiting from robust vascularisation and anatomical proximity. However, its use in palatal defect coverage has been limited by the presence of dentition. This article describes a novel TMF transposition technique through a trans-antral pathway, with immediate correction of temporal contour deformity with a titanium mesh. A case of type 2A maxillectomy in a fully dentate patient with a malignant neoplasm shows the technique's feasibility. Key steps include raising the TMF via a hemicoronal approach,

An uncommon case of fibrolipoma.

Lipoma is a common benign soft-tissue neoplasm derived from mature adipose tissue neoplasm, but its presence in the oral and pharyngeal region is relatively uncommon. Oral lipoma was first described by Roux in 1848 as "yellow epulis." It has an incidence rate of about 1%-4% of all benign oral lesions, with a prevalence rate of about 0.0002%. Fibrolipoma is an extremely rare subtype of lipoma which accounts for 1.6% of all facial lipomas. Specific anatomic locations of occurrence within the oral and maxillofacial region include the parotid region, buccal mucosa, lips, submandibular region, tong

Oral hobnail hemangioma: case report.

Hobnail hemangioma (HH) is a rare benign vascular neoplasm reported as a distinctive small benign, solitary vascular neoplasm of the superficial and mid-dermis occurring on the face, trunk, or extremities of young or middle-aged adults. The oral manifestations are quite uncommon, with only three cases reported in the English language literature. The following case refers to a 38-year-old woman with a small nodule on the hard palatal mucosa. Histological findings showed a biphasic growth pattern of irregularly dilated vascular structures in the superficial mucosa, lined by epithelioid endotheli

Synovial cell sarcoma of the neck. Case report and review of the literature.

Synovial sarcoma is an uncommon neoplasm accounting between 8 and 10% of all soft tissue malignancies. Involvement of the head and neck region is rare. So far, fewer than 100 cases have been reported in the literature and only a few originated in the soft palate, tongue, larynx, hypopharynx, and cervical oesophagus. We report the case of a synovial sarcoma of the parapharyngeal space in a 72-year-old female, and experience in the behaviour and surgical treatment of this neoplasm is described. The patient has remained disease free for 28 months, with regular follow-up. Based upon this case and

Non-Hodgkin lymphoma of a palate: A case report of a highly destructive lesion.

Non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) is a haematolymphoid neoplasm that can affect nodal and extra-nodal sites. It is a rare disease in the oral cavity, accounting for only 2% of all extra-nodal lymphomas. Its aetiology is multi-factorial, being strongly associated with viral infections. The average age group most affected is 66 years old, with a slight predilection for males. The most common histological sub-type in the oral cavity is diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, with Waldeyer's ring being the most affected site in the nodal form, and extranodally, it may involve the tongue, hard/soft palate, maxilla

A Rare and Extensive Case of Oral Malignant Melanoma involving Mandibular Gingiva.

Oral malignant melanoma is an infrequent but an aggressive neoplasm of unknown etiology, seen most commonly in middle age male patients and is more frequently seen at the hard palate and gingiva. The tumor tends to metastasize or locally invade tissue more readily than other malignant tumors in the oral region. In this article, we report a rare case of extensive oral melanoma in a 55-year-old male patient, with a chief complaint of painless growth in mandibular anterior gingiva measuring about 2.6 X 1.7 X 0.8 cm and extending bilaterally till posterior mandibular gingiva and unilaterally to ri
