[Postadenotomy soft palate paresis in children].

One of frequent complications after adenotomy and tonsillectomy is paresis of the soft palate. Literature data, four groups of causes of soft palate paresis are analysed. The treatment was given to 28 patients with soft palate paresis of different etiology. Active treatment recovered function of the palate in most of the patients.

Postnatal development of rat soft palate.

The stratified squamous epithelium lining the oral surface of the soft palate is keratinized and serves as a masticatory organ. Taste buds develop from the cells of the stratified squamous epithelium lining the oral surface during the first 3 weeks of life, and after this no new buds are formed. They are present in the median and paramedian regions of the soft palate: 30% are in the epithelium of fungiform papillae, the remainder being in the surface epithelium. Only 6% of the taste buds are in the vicinity of glandular pits. Glands begin to develop from the deeper portion of tubular invaginat

Soft obturator prosthesis for postoperative soft palate carcinoma: A clinical report.

An intraoral prosthesis with a soft flexible obturator was provided for a patient with a soft palate perforation after surgical and chemoradiotherapy treatments of a soft palate tumor. An obturator composed of movable and flexible silicone was attached to a structure similar to a palatal lift; it was therefore able to move according to the movement of the soft palate, which was confirmed by endoscopic examination. The application of this prosthesis resulted in complete disappearance of hypernasality and food reflux, and the patient was able to eat without particular limitation during daytime w

Speech assessment following microsurgical soft palate repair.

The aim of this study was to analyze speech intelligibility of children, who had undergone microsurgical soft palate repair according to Sommerlad. Cleft palate patients were treated by closure of the soft palate according to Sommerlad at about 6 months of age. At the age of 11, their speech was evaluated through automatic speech recognition. Word recognition rate (WR) was used as the outcome parameter of automatic speech recognition. To validate automatic speech results, an institute for speech therapy evaluated the speech samples for perceptual intelligibility. The results of this study grou

Soft Palate Dysplasia: Properties and Surgical Techniques.

BACKGROUND: The authors aimed to report a hitherto undescribed class of patients with the obvious phenotype of a novel soft palate dysplasia (SPD) combining unilateral soft palate hypoplasia with a fully developed uvula. The authors also aimed to investigate and evaluate the corresponding surgical approaches. METHODS: Twelve patients were clinically diagnosed with SPD. Clinical examination, including radiographic tests, was performed to characterize the congenital deformity. The effectiveness of velopharyngeal closure and speech were tested preoperatively and postoperatively. RESULTS: SPD wa

Soft Palate Dysfunction in Children With Microtia.

BACKGROUND: Speech issues in microtia patients have been historically attributed to poor hearing. However, the authors have noted that almost all patients with microtia have palatal dysfunction. The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of soft palate dysfunction (SPD) and velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI) in microtia patients. METHODS: A prospective cohort study was performed on consecutive microtia patients from March to June 2017. Clinical characteristics were collected. Palate movement was rated by oral examination and degree of nasal escape by the mirror-fogging test. Correla

Sensory Innervation of the Human Soft Palate.

The human soft palate plays an important role in respiration, swallowing, and speech. These motor activities depend on reflexes mediated by sensory nerve endings. To date, the details of human sensory innervation to the soft palate have not been demonstrated. In this study, eight adult human whole-mount (soft palate-tongue-pharynx-larynx-upper esophagus) specimens were obtained from autopsy. Each specimen was bisected in the midline, forming two equal and symmetrical halves. Eight hemi-specimens were processed with Sihler's stain, a whole-mount nerve staining technique. The remaining eight hem

Arterial supply of the human soft palate.

PURPOSE: Palatal surgery for snoring or obstructive sleep apnea is commonly performed; however, the vascular anatomy of the soft palate is not well described. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the vascular anatomy of the soft palate. METHODS: This study was performed on 22 adult cadaveric heads. All specimens were prepared with vascular injections using red liquid silicone through the common carotid artery. The palate was then harvested and decolorized, and the vascular anatomy was studied. RESULTS: Of 22 specimens, 20 had sufficient uptake of the silicone dye. The anterior and poste

Asymmetrical soft palate cleft repair: preliminary results.

The reconstructions of the asymmetrical soft palate cleft is a surgical challenge when it comes to achieving symmetry and optimal soft palate muscular function. Three different versions of the intravelar veloplasty have been used: the intravelar veloplasty (1969) (type I), the modification according to anatomical defects (1991) (type II), and the modification using part of Sommerlad's technique and part of Ivanov's technique (2008) (type III). The perioperative outcomes of the type II and type III intravelar veloplasty were assessed and compared in asymmetrical cleft cases. Two hundred and sev

Solitary isolated neurofibroma of the soft palate.

Neurofibroma of the soft palate is an unusual tumor and probably only two cases have been reported in English literature previously. Solitary isolated neurofibroma of the soft palate not associated with von Recklinghausen's disease is even more infrequent. To the best of our knowledge, this case represents the third reported in English literature. Complete surgical excision was achieved after tracheostomy due to envisaged difficulty in intubation. We present a 40-year-old man with an uncommon soft palatal neurogenic tumor.

Obturation of the partial soft palate defect.

A partially resected soft palate represents a more significant challenge for effective prosthodontic obturation than for complete soft palate resections. In fact, for some patients it may not be possible to prosthetically rehabilitate with partial soft palate resections, resulting in velopharyngeal dysfunction, which could include hypernasal voice quality and nasal regurgitation of food and liquids. This article presents a technique for recording the contours of a partial soft-palate defect for prosthetic obturation.

Primary extracranial meningioma of the soft palate.

Extracranial meningiomas comprise two per cent of all meningiomas. Primary extracranial meningiomas are even less common. The authors report the first case of a primary extracranial meningiomas of the soft palate, which presented as an intraoral mass. This was treated by surgical excision and there was no evidence of tumour recurrence at four years of follow-up.

Soft-palate myogenesis: a developmental field paradigm.

Surgical correction of clefts of the soft palate leads to varying degrees of normal function although the repair itself is successful. Explanations for this include structural abnormalities of the muscles. Previous studies have focused primarily on gross anatomical features of late fetal and postnatal cleft palate musculature; however, infrequent reference has been made to early prenatal morphologic patterns of soft-palate development, beginning with the embryo. Thus we evaluated the chronology of prenatal myogenesis of the soft palate from its early mesenchymal phase through the appearance of

Heterotopic brain tissue of the soft palate.

Heterotopic brain tissue is an unusual substance which is very difficult to diagnose correctly preoperatively. We report on a 7-month-old male infant with heterotopic brain tissue of the soft palate, and describe the results of preoperative examinations including brain scintigraphy, angiography, brain computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). MRI was found useful to show that the tumor had no junction with the intracranial space. The patient was treated successfully without complication or recurrence after 1.5 years follow-up.
