'Stop this horror': protest imagery, exposure tactics, and the media campaign to end British counterinsurgency violence in Malaya, 1948-53.

This article examines how leftist writers and editors in Britain employed photography as a tool for challenging the legitimacy of the so-called Malayan 'Emergency', which was a twelve-year counterinsurgency campaign engineered to counter uprisings in colonial Malaya after the Second World War. By circulating protest imagery in anti-war pamphlets, newsletters and newspapers, the activists in focus here demanded an end to counterinsurgency violence and the Malayan campaign. The British government's response-denying the images' authenticity and discrediting their sources-illustrates how imperiali

Reducing ophthalmic surgical waste through electronic instructions for use: a multisociety position paper.

Every ophthalmic surgical supply, including intraocular lenses (IOLs), IOL cartridges, and ophthalmic viscosurgical device syringes, is packaged with instructions for use (IFU). These pamphlets are printed in multiple languages and, in the case of an IOL, significantly increase the size and weight of the packaging. To eliminate this significant and unnecessary source of waste, we recommend that manufacturers move to Quick Response codes that link to online electronic IFU (e-IFU) as a sensible alternative. In addition to reducing carbon emissions and manufacturing costs, e-IFU can be updated mo

Nursing habits and dental decay in infants: "nursing bottle caries".

The decay-producing capabilities of certain foods can be influenced by eating habits. When a habit of frequent nocturnal bottle or breast feeding is maintained beyond a year of age, the potential for gross dental decay in very young children is established. Bovine milk, milk formulas and human breast milk have all been implicated in the condition of "nursing bottle caries," because of their lactose content. Additional sweeteners in the nursing bottle, the use of fruit juices or the use of honey-dipped pacifiers can also cause "nursing bottle caries." "Nursing bottle caries" can be prevented th

Assessing the Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice of Healthcare Workers on the Herpes Zoster Vaccine in Saudi Arabia: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Herpes zoster (HZ), known as shingles disease, has several complications that greatly affect elderly and immunocompromised people. Despite evidence for HZ vaccine efficiency and cost-effectiveness, the uptake of the HZ vaccine is lower than that of other common adult vaccines. Strong recommendations by healthcare workers (HCWs) for the HZ vaccine could increase vaccine uptake. AIM: This study aimed to investigate HCWs' knowledge, attitude, and practice of the recombinant zoster vaccine (RZV) in Saudi Arabia and identify gaps and barriers in vaccine recommendation.

Development and validation of a novel informational booklet for pediatric long-term ventilation decision support.

OBJECTIVES: To provide accessible, uniform, comprehensive, and balanced information to families deciding whether to initiate long-term ventilation (LTV) for their child, we sought to develop and validate a novel informational resource. METHODS: The Ottawa Decision Support Framework was followed. Previous interviews with 44 lay and 15 professional stakeholders and published literature provided content for a booklet. Iterative versions were cognitive tested with six parents facing decisions and five pediatric intensivists. Ten parents facing decisions evaluated the booklet using the Preparation

Do patients read breast self-examination booklets?

If a campaign to encourage women to examine their breasts for lumps is to succeed, it is necessary for women to read the literature produced. An attempt was made to estimate whether such literature was read, and in a group of women 90.6 per cent read the booklet, and 15.9 per cent altered their behaviour. There were several other non-numerical indicators which strongly suggested that women read the literature. A large-scale study is now under way.

Characteristics associated with intervention and follow-up attendance in a secondhand smoke exposure study for families of NICU infants.

OBJECTIVE: The neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) is an ideal setting to intervene with an under served population on secondhand smoke exposure (SHSe). Unfortunately, attrition may compromise outcomes. Baseline characteristics associated with intervention and follow-up attendance were investigated in mothers who participated in a novel SHSe prevention study designed for households with a smoker and a NICU-admitted infant. METHODS: Intervention participants received two motivational, NICU-based counseling sessions; usual care participants received pamphlets. Home-based follow-up assessments o

A comparative analysis of clinical quality and readability of neuropathic pain patient information leaflets: Türkiye versus the United States.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Neuropathic pain management requires high patient adherence and complex dose-titration regimens, making the readability of patient information leaflets (PILs) a critical patient safety factor. This study aimed to compare the clinical content quality and linguistic readability of PILs for neuropathic pain medications between Türkiye (TİTCK) and the United States (DailyMed). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 11 pairs of innovator medications were analyzed. Clinical content was assessed using the 15-item Keystone Clinical Content Checklist (KCCC). Large language models: unlocking new potential in patient education for thyroid eye disease.

PURPOSE: This study aims to evaluate the performance of three large language models (LLMs) in generating patient education materials (PEMs) for thyroid eye disease (TED), intending to improve patients' understanding and awareness of TED. METHODS: We evaluated the performance of ChatGPT-4o, Claude 3.5, and Gemini 1.5 in generating PEMs for TED by designing different prompts. First, we produced TED patient educational brochures based on prompts A and B, respectively. Prompt B asked to make the content simple for sixth graders. Next, we designed two responses to frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Effect of receiving a customizable brochure on breast cancer patients' knowledge about their diagnosis and treatment: A randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Patients' lack of knowledge about their own disease may function as a barrier to shared decision-making and well-being. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of written educational materials on breast cancer patients. METHODS: This multicenter, parallel, unblinded, randomized trial included Latin American women aged ≥18 years with a recent breast cancer diagnosis yet to start systemic therapy. Participants underwent randomization in a 1:1 ratio to receive a customizable or standard educational brochure. The primary objective was accurate identification of molecular subtype. Seco

Analyzing the Readability of Health Information Booklets on Cardiovascular Diseases.

A low level of patient health literacy represents a major reason for worse prognosis or reduced therapy adherence. Health information booklets are a major tool for improving patient's health literacy. This paper presents a computer-based readability analysis of patient information booklets from the cardiovascular domain. The study relies on 34 English booklets mostly on heart disease, prevention and procedures. It compares five different, well-established readability instruments. On average, readers of the assessed booklets have to visit school at least until the 9th U.S. school grade when app

Interobserver variation using the AO/ASIF classification of long bone fractures.

A comprehensive classification system has been proposed by the AO/ASIF Foundation for the classification of long bone fractures. After an explanatory talk and with the aid of an illustrated pamphlet, 18 orthopaedic surgeons were asked to classify 10 long bone fractures according to the AO system. Three of the participating surgeons had previous experience of the classification system. After individual classification, a consensus classification was derived and the results of the individual and consensus codings were compared. Only 32 per cent of all codings agreed with the final consensus. Ther
