Enclosure design and space utilization by Indian leopards (Panthera pardus) in four zoos in Southern India.

Enclosure design and the use of enclosure space influence the activity budget of cap-tive leopards. The study laid out in grids all enclosures on the base map and segregated these grids into 4 zones. Every 5 min, the study recorded the proportion of time spent in these zones with the leopards' behavior. Captive leopards most frequently used the "edge" zone. Almost all leopards used the edge zone for stereotypic pacing, the "back" zone for resting, and the "other" zone for activity. The study positively corre-lated the proportion of time spent in the "enriched" zone with activity levels exhibit

TIGER (PANTHERA TIGRIS) AND DOMESTIC CAT (FELIS CATUS) IMMUNE RESPONSES TO CANARYPOX-VECTORED CANINE DISTEMPER VACCINATION.

Two methods for delivering a canarypox-vectored canine distemper vaccine to tigers (Panthera tigris) and domestic cats (Felis catus) were investigated. Eight tigers were divided randomly into two vaccination groups: subcutaneous injection or topical tonsillar application. Each tiger received 2 ml of canine distemper virus (CDV) vaccine (Merial Ferret Distemper Vaccine). Blood was collected from tigers on days 0, 21, 35 or 37, and 112 post-initial vaccination (PIV). Domestic cats were divided randomly into four treatment groups: saline injection (negative controls), low- and high-dose oral, and

OSTEOCHONDRAL AUTOGRAFT TRANSFER FOR TREATMENT OF STIFLE OSTEOCHONDRITIS DISSECANS IN TWO RELATED SNOW LEOPARDS ( PANTHERA UNCIA).

Two related female snow leopards ( Panthera uncia) were diagnosed with osteochondritis dissecans of the lateral femoral condyle via radiographs and computed tomography. Lesions were either bilateral (Patient 1) or unilateral (Patient 2). Surgical treatment was performed using an osteochondral autograft transfer system following cartilage flap removal. After a 6-wk recovery period, both animals had a markedly improved gait with mild pelvic limb stiffness. Patient 1 developed intermittent lameness 9 mo postsurgery and Patient 2 had mild lameness 3 yr postsurgery. Because of recurrent lameness, b

Development of a composite index framework for comprehensive assessment of chemical immobilization performance in tigers (Panthera tigris).

INTRODUCTION: Chemical immobilization is an important part of veterinary care in tigers (Panthera tigris) as it allows animals to be safely handled for routine health examinations, diagnostic procedures and treatment. METHODS: This study evaluated the clinical performance of a medetomidine (0.04 mg/kg)-ketamine (3 mg/kg) protocol in 40 facility-managed tigers (22 males and 18 females) undergoing routine disease screening and surveillance as part of the Annual Health Checkup. Induction, physiological responses, need for supplemental medication and recovery were assessed using the Immobilizatio

Molecular characterisation and histopathological analysis of canine distemper virus in a Malayan tiger (Panthera tigris jacksoni).

IMPORTANCE: Canine distemper virus (CDV) has a broad host range, spanning mammals of the order Carnivora and other orders, often proving fatal. The detection of CDV in a Malayan tiger (Panthera tigris jacksoni) in Malaysia in 2019 marks the first such case diagnosed in Malayan tigers, suggesting possible exposure from domestic animals or wildlife reservoirs. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to describe histological manifestations and characterise the CDV strain in the tiger to determine its molecular epidemiology and postulate viral pathogenicity. METHODS: Histopathology characterisation of the in

Detection and molecular characterisation of intestinal parasites in the South China tiger Panthera tigris amoyensis (Hilzheimer).

Parasitic infections of the South China tigers in the Meihua Mountains have not been explored previously. Faeces of 22 South China tigers from the China Tiger Park in the Meihua Mountains were examined. Eggs of ascaridoid nematodes and oocysts of coccidia were detected by Mini-FLOTAC assay. Morphological observation and molecular characterisation of the oocysts were carried out. The prevalence of Toxascaris leonina (von Linstow, 1902) was 18% (4/22), and the highest egg per gram (EPG) count in the faeces was 27,150. The prevalence of Cystoisospora sp. was 45% (1 0/22) and the highest oocysts p

From People to Panthera: Natural SARS-CoV-2 Infection in Tigers and Lions at the Bronx Zoo.

Despite numerous barriers to transmission, zoonoses are the major cause of emerging infectious diseases in humans. Among these, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), and ebolaviruses have killed thousands; the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) has killed millions. Zoonoses and human-to-animal cross-species transmission are driven by human actions and have important management, conservation, and public health implications. The current SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, which presumably originated from an animal reservoir, has killed more than half a million peopl

Necrotizing pneumonia and pleuritis associated with extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli in a tiger (Panthera tigris) cub.

Extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli (ExPEC) cause diseases in humans and animals, affecting organs outside the alimentary canal. In recent years, ExPEC have been reported as a cause of fatal pneumonia in dogs, cats, and in a horse. In the current report, a fatal case of pneumonia and pleuritis is described in a 4-week-old tiger (Panthera tigris) cub associated with ExPEC. The cub was presented with a sudden-onset respiratory illness and died after a few hours. Postmortem examination of the cub revealed an acute necrotizing pneumonia. The alveolar spaces were filled with large numbers o

GUT-DERIVED UREMIC TOXICITY IN LIONS (PANTHERA LEO) WITH CHRONIC KIDNEY DISEASE: A POTENTIAL THERAPEUTIC TARGET?

Lions (Panthera leo) share an intrinsic susceptibility to chronic kidney disease (CKD) with other species of the Felidae. Interestingly, specific gut-derived uremic toxins-indoxyl sulfate, p-cresyl sulfate, and trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO)-find their origin in amino acids highly abundant in the strict carnivorous feline diet. These toxins are well-recognized mediators of renal tubular inflammation and are associated with disease progression in cats. Therefore, a potential causal involvement of gut-derived uremic toxicity in the pathophysiology of CKD can be hypothesized in Felidae. However, i

Nutritional secondary hyperparathyroidism in a white lion cub (Panthera leo), with concomitant radiographic double cortical line.

A captive-bred white lion cub was presented with hindquarter pain, lameness and reluctance to move. Radiographs revealed generalised osteoapenia, multiple fractures, a severely collapsed pelvic girdle, bilateral lateral bowing of the scapulae and mild kyphosis of the caudal vertebrae. A double cortical line, a distinct sign of osteopaenia, was repeatedly seen on the pelvic limbs, most strikingly along both femurs. Based on radiographic findings and a history of an exclusive meat diet since weaning, a diagnosis of nutritional secondary hyperparathyroidism was made. The diet was changed to a com

Electrocardiographic parameters and heart rate variability in free-ranging Jaguars (Panthera onca) immobilized with tiletamine-zolazepam-dexmedetomidine.

Understanding the physiology and particularities of wild felids is important for improving the ability of veterinary medicine to contribute to the preservation of these species. Thus, the objective of this study was to describe the electrocardiographic parameters and heart rate variability (HRV) of wild jaguars (Panthera onca) captured in Brazil. The anaesthetic protocol used for chemical restraint of the animals involved the drug combination of tiletamine and zolazepam (7 mg/Kg) along with the α2 adrenergic (receptor) agonist dexmedetomidine (10 µg/Kg). The 42 electrocardiographic reports fro

Ecological Implications of Rodenticide Exposure: First Evidence of Bromadiolone Poisoning in an Indian Leopard (Panthera pardus fusca).

Large carnivores such as Indian leopard (Panthera pardus fusca) play a crucial role in maintaining ecosystem stability. However, they face increasing threats from habitat loss and other anthropogenic pressures. One significant but underreported threat is unintentional or deliberate poisoning, particularly from chemical pesticides. This study reports the first documented case of rodenticide (bromadiolone) poisoning in a large mammalian carnivore in India. In this study, a deceased female leopard (~5 years old) was recovered from the Nilgiris Forest Division, Tamil Nadu, India. Tissues of kidney

Human procurement of meat from lion (Panthera leo) kills: Costs of disturbance and implications for carnivore conservation.

In Africa, humans and large carnivores compete over access to resources, including prey. Disturbance by humans to kills made by carnivores, often for purposes of obtaining all or portions of the carcass, constitutes a form of human-wildlife conflict. However the occurrence of this practice, known as human kleptoparasitism, and its impact on carnivores has received little scientific attention. We obtained expert opinions from African lion researchers and stakeholders via a standardized questionnaire to characterize the geographic extent and frequency of human kleptoparasitism as it occurs in mo

Molecular cloning and functional characterization of eleven subtypes of interferon-α in Amur tigers (Panthera tigris altaica).

Interferon has a broad-spectrum of antiviral effects and represents an ideal choice for the development of antiviral drugs. Nonetheless, information about alpha interferon (IFN-α) is vacant in Amur tiger (Panthera tigris altaica), an endangered species and indigenous to northeast Asia. Herein, 11 PtIFN-αs genes, which encoded proteins of 164-165 amino acids, were amplified. Afterwards, expression and purification were conducted in Escherichia coli. In physicochemical analysis, PtIFN-αs were shown to be highly sensitive to trypsin and remained stable despite changes in pH and temperature. In fe

Development of a Methodology for Measuring Oxytocin in Feces: Insights from a Preliminary Study in Captive Lions (Panthera leo).

Oxytocin (OT) has emerged as a central focus in stress regulation and animal welfare research. While commonly measured in blood, saliva, and urine, its presence in feces remains unexplored. Fecal OT (fOT) could be highly valuable for wildlife studies, where direct handling is impractical. This study explored OT detection in feces using lions (Panthera leo) as a model species. The objectives included developing a reliable fOT extraction protocol, describing baseline fOT patterns in captive lions, and evaluating its relationship with fecal glucocorticoid metabolites (fGM) under non-stressful con
